     Aro

Aro

The witch formerly known as the Constellation Witch. She deserted from the Witch Empire a long time ago and lived in hiding, until Tan closed down her shop. Through a series of coincidences, they meet again after he's transformed into a bull and she offers to help him lift the curse.
  • Action Girl: She's a powerful witch and a talented archer.
  • All-Loving Hero: She frees Tan from the arena as soon as she realizes he's not an ordinary bull, but a cursed human and promises him to lift his curse, even though she is under no obligation to do so.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: While she doesn't like violence, Aro is still able and willing to jump into the fray to defend herself and others. Most of her spells are incredibly powerful beasts who are devoted to her, so pissing her off is a really bad idea.
  • Good Is Not Soft: Aro might be friendly and good-natured, but she has no patience for people who act rude or entitled. This actually gets her in trouble at the beginning of the comic when she tells Tan off for cutting the line in her shop. He exposes her as a witch and closes her shop down in retaliation.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: She has no idea who Tan really is in season 1, due to him keeping his identity a secret from her out of fear she would kill him. Naturally she's less than pleased when she finds out who he really is.
  • Meaningful Name: She's an archer, and her name is Aro.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: She deeply regrets having created so many powerful spells for the Empress. One of the main reasons she helps Tan is because the curse placed on him was originally written by her and she feels responsible for it being misused in this manner. She also still suffers from the guilt of the Empress using the curse on Tan's father and eating him while he was still transformed. Not really made better by the fact that Aro herself ate a piece of him before the Empress told her.
  • The Quisling: A rare positive example. After seeing how cruel the Empress truly was, she decided to aid the human kingdom in the war, by secretly sending them information about the Witch Empire's attacks and strategies. This ended up being the tipping point in the war, leading to the humans easily defeating the witches.
  • Red Baron: When she was still serving under the Witch Empire, she was known as The Constellation Witch, due to her powers coming from the constellations.
  • Speaks Fluent Animal: Downplayed. She's one of the few people who can understand Tan as a bull, but that's only because his curse is related to constellations.

     Tan

Tan

The king's Royal Advisor. He gets turned into a bull at the start of the comic due to a curse.
  • And I Must Scream: Only Aro and certain magic users can understand him when he's in bull-form.
  • Big Eater: Even before he was turned into a bull he had a well-known love of food and regularly indulged on sweets and pastries.
  • Brutal Honesty: He has a tendency to say whatever he wants, not caring whether or not it might hurt the person he's talking to.
  • Can't Stay Normal: Aro is able to lift his curse at the end of season 1, but due to the male witch having sabotaged the spell book she took the counter-spell out of it's only temporary and the ritual has to be repeated regularly to keep him in human form. It also only works when Venus is above the horizon.
  • Curse: He gets a curse placed on him that turns him into his zodiac sign: a bull.
  • Forced Transformation: He's not the least bit happy about his transformation into a bull.
  • Freudian Excuse: It's revealed that the king's former Military Advisor, who got turned into a lamb and eaten by the witches' Empress, was his father. While that doesn't excuse his treatment of witches, it does explain it.
    • Even worse, the reason his father ended up captured was because a couple of witches had kidnapped Tan beforehand and held him hostage. To add insult to injury, once Tan's father was cursed and killed, they made Tan eat a piece of him before letting him go, taunting him all the way through.
  • Jerkass: At the beginning of the story he's an entitled, selfish jerk who enforces systemic racism against witches because of a personal grudge. Being turned into a bull knocks him down a few pegs though.
  • The Lost Lenore: Rosi, a fellow noble he grew close to when he was younger. She was killed by witches because of a Tragic Misunderstanding and during the war a witch disguised herself as Rosi to lure Tan into a trap.
  • Missing Mom: For the first two seasons, Tan's mother was never seen nor mentioned. Come Season 3 and we get to see Azur, a pirate captain who happens to be Tan's long lost mother.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Tan counts as this, especially whenever he appears naked after he changes back from his bull form.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: The beggar he throws a few coins to turns out to be a malicious witch who has it out for him. The coins in question are used by the witch to place the Zodiac Curse on him and turn him into a bull and to create small devils that go on to cause all sorts of trouble for him and Aro during their journey.
  • Pet the Dog: Gives a homeless beggar a few coins at the start of the story, to establish that he isn't completely heartless. Ironically, this act of kindness is what indirectly gets him turned into a bull later on.
  • Spoiled Brat: His status as the king's royal advisor meant he never had to want for anything in his life. He reacts appalled when Aro suggests he help her earn money and immediately falls for a cult who pampers him.
  • Stealing the Credit: The season 1 finale reveals that he intercepted Aro's letters to the king and used the information in them to develop counter strategies. This almost gets Aro in serious trouble, as the letters were the one piece of evidence she had to clear her name. Luckily he owns up to it before Deo has her thrown in jail.
  • Sweet Tooth: Though he likes food in general, he seems to have a special preference for sweets and cakes.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Spending time with Aro makes him realize not all witches are inherently evil. He mellows out significantly over time and even resolves to make Aro's dream of witches and humans living together a reality to make up for his atrocious treatment of witches.

Humans

     Deo

King Deo

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/deo.PNG
The king of the humans and Tan's childhood friend.
  • A Father to His Men: He cares greatly about his servants and guards and is even willing to risk his life for them.
  • The Good King: What he aspires to be. His ultimate goal is to create a kingdom in which humans and witches live in harmony together.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: He considers the on-going poverty and persecution of witches in the kingdom a personal failure of his.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: He's willing to lend everyone an ear, regardless of status. After finally finding Aro and Tan at the end of the first season, he patiently hears Aro out, in spite of her status as the most wanted witch in the kingdom. He also apologizes to her for almost having her thrown in jail after Tan confirms she wasn't the one responsible for his curse.
  • Sheltered Aristocrat: As the prince of the Human Kingdom, he grew up pretty pampered. But unlike with Tan, it didn't result in him becoming an entitled brat. On the contrary, he's a warm and friendly individual who values the people around him and freely admits to his flaws. He continually strives to be the best king he can be to serve his kingdom.

     Bex

Bex

Aro's best friend.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: To Aro. She journeys half across the kingdom to find her and defends her from king Deo once she does. Their friendship is so pure it drives one of the guards to tears.
  • Nice Girl: She's kind and open-minded, consoling Aro after Tan closes her shop and assuring her she'll still be her friend, even though Aro kept her identity as a witch a secret from her.

Magical Beings

     The Mountain Spirit

The Mountain Spirit

An ill-tempered mountain who regularly demands sacrifices from her cult.
  • Bad Boss: To her cult. She demands them to sacrifice gods and kings to her on a regular basis. And if she deems the sacrifices unworthy, she'll cause earthquakes and plug up her rivers.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: The main reason for her bad attitude. She was mad at the villagers' lack of respect for her, so she started tyrannizing them. Though as she sorrowfully admits to Deo, while the villagers certainly grew scared of her, they never really gave her the respect she desired.
  • Easily Forgiven: She caused numerous deaths, closed off the village's water supply out of pettiness, captured and tortured a group of humans who'd done absolutely nothing to her and repeatedly antagonised Deo. Not only does Deo bear her no grudge at all, he essentially rewards her horrible behavior by giving her exactly what she wants: A group of followers who will care for and cherish her.
  • Gaia's Vengeance: Downplayed. Shortly after the witch tribe who lived on her moved away, it was replaced by a settlement of humans. The humans took her crystals without giving anything back in turn, leading her to use her power to intimidate them into sacrifcing kings and gods to her.
  • Genius Loci: A mountain who gained sentience through the birth stones of the dead witches buried within her.
  • Psychopathic Womanchild: She killed and tormented people out of wrath over perceived disrespect on their part for years. The insults she uses on Deo also come across as rather childish, for example her complaining about his "silly laughing spoiled face".

     Muga

Witch Muga

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/twatb_muga_4.PNG
An elderly witch running a sanctuary for cursed people.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: When she keeps refusing to work her reversal magic on Tan, Aro asks her if she's actually ever reversed a curse before. Muga is clearly caught off-guard, which gives Aro all the answer she needs.
  • Dark Secret: There's something wrong with her birthstone, making her unable to undo curses.
  • Character Death: Kass has his devil spirit drop a stone on her head, which frees the evil spirit within her. She manages to recover long enough to help Aro and Tan take care of it, but it saps her remaining strength. She dies soon after.
  • Freudian Excuse: She holds a hefty grudge against both Aro and Laya, due to her daughter being subjected to a Forced Transformation by Laya with a curse Aro had written.
  • It's Personal: Her daughter Tuzi was turned into a white rabbit with one of Aro's curses.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She may be rude and abrasive, but she truly does for the cursed people under her care and does her best to make life as pleasant as possible for them.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: She wastes no times chewing Aro out for gifting the empress eternal life and for creating curses in the first place.

Antagonists

     Kass

Kass

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/douchebag_witch.PNG
A male witch who for some reason wants to kill Tan.
  • The Beastmaster: He is able to create and control little devils from the essence of other people.
  • Determinator: He is dead-set on killing Tan and retrieving Aro for the Witch Empire. When he finally accepts he is no match for Aro in terms of magical power, he resolves to do it the old-fashioned way.
  • The Dragon: He's the one who turned Tan into a bull and his devils keep making trouble for Tan and Aro throughout the comic.
  • Pet the Dog: He always treats his little demon servants with kindness and patience, showing that while he might be a Bad Guy, he's not a bad guy.

     Efa

Efa

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/twatb_efa.PNG
The Empress' personal masseuse, who helps her direct her prophetic dreams.

     Laya

Empress Laya

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/layla.PNG
The ruler of the Witch Empire.
  • Big Bad: She's the main antagonist of the story.
  • Blessed with Suck: If it wasn’t for Aro’s magic keeping her young, her visions would have killed her by now.
  • Cast from Lifespan: It turns out using her power ages her. The more she uses it the more she ages. She was an actual teenager when she first met Aro, well before Aro's magic began reverting her to her true age, but because her own magic still requires her own lifespan to be used, she has to keep relaying on Aro's magic to stay alive and also look her age properly.
  • Dreaming of Things to Come: Her power and the reason why the witches were able to keep the upper hand in the war for such a long time. She receives prophetic dreams every night and was thus able to predict and counter every single move the human army would make. Though she does need outside help to read her dreams clearly.
  • Face of an Angel, Mind of a Demon: She might appear serene and kind, but Aro's stories about her make it clear that she's a cruel, power-hungry tyrant at heart.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: How she got rid of the human kingdom's old military advisor. She turned him into a sheep through the zodiac curse, then had him served for dinner.
  • Kick the Dog:
    • She had Tan kidnapped during the war to lure out his father, the king's military advisor. When he showed up, she placed the Zodiac Curse on him and had him served for dinner.
    • She intentionally used one of Hercules' stars to rejuvenate herself, knowing that it would basically kill him and render him useless to Aro.
  • Older Than They Look: Zig-zagged. She was an old woman when Aro was introduced to her, but currently looks like she's in her twenties, thanks to Aro's magic. It turns out the reason she was so old was because using her power ages her. She’s really 18 years old without the time she spent living through her visions.
  • Vain Sorceress: She uses up a star to restore her youth every week. This is justified when we learn that using her power to live through possible futures physically ages her. She’s really only 18 years old. It’s possible that the only reason she needs a new star every week is because she won’t stop using her visions in her attempt to destroy the human kingdom.
  • Visionary Villain: She dreams of a world where witches rule supreme and humans are reduced to a Slave Race.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: Has white hair yet has dark intentions.
  • Wicked Witch: She used a spell of Aro's to kill and eat the then Military Advisor of the human kingdom. And as Aro later found out, her vision for the future was to have every human subjected to a Forced Transformation and forced to serve under the higher-class witches.
