     Moses
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/moses_portrait.png

Gender: Female

Birthday: November 30

Age: 49 yrs.

Affiliation: Seven Association, Limbus Company Distortion Dept. (LCD)

Fixer Grade: 5

Height: 5'1''

The titular Distortion Detective and eponymous Operator of Moses' Office, she is a short middle-aged woman who has the special ability to see the progression of Distortions before they physically manifest. She has a modified smoking pipe which allows her to cleanse Distortions and pacify enemies, among other uses. Secretly, this pipe is actually her Psychoment (E.G.O.), making her one of the few people known to have successfully manifested E.G.O. As a result, she cannot Distort.

  • An Arm and a Leg: Ends up losing her right arm during a confrontation with Vespa, leading to her getting a prosthetic one.
  • The Atoner: Moses served as the captain of the Udjat, effectively Dias' private army, and committed many atrocities for Dias and Benjamin during the Smoke War. Seeking to repent, she left the Udjat (taking Ezra and Hee-joon with her) and became the Distortion Detective, trying to understand the Distortion.
  • Big Guy, Little Guy: The little guy to Ezra's big guy.
  • Broken Pedestal: Originally an abandoned child, she was adopted by Dias, who treated her like a younger sister. She even saw Dias as "her light," being willing to do anything to achieve Dias' dreams. However, Moses gradually realized that Dias was only using her (and the rest of the Udjat) as a disposable tool, and chose to leave for good following the Smoke War.
  • Call-Back: Her smoking pipe utilizes attacks directly corresponding with the various damage types from Lobotomy Corporation, with the smoke colored appropriately as well.
  • Cast From Life Span: Her "pale breath" attack comes at a direct cost of shortening Moses' lifespan and as such, using it indicates that the Godzilla Threshold has been crossed for her.
  • Deadpan Snarker: At times, such as in Chapter 23 when Ezra tries to improvise aliases for them in Quercus Village.
Ezra: "I’m Miss Momo’s partner in travel! Name’s Ezez!"
Moses: That’s a false name just as elaborate as mine.
  • Distinguished Gentleman's Pipe: Moses has a smoking pipe that she frequently smokes on. It's not a normal smoking pipe, either; it's actually a Psychoment, or rather, an E.G.O., that she can use to purify incomplete Distortions and pacify and/or suppress enemies, depending on the smoke's color, though at the cost of her own lifespan.
  • Genre Savvy: Which might be expected from working in a role requiring knowledge of mental and social archetypes. For example, Moses spends much of her time in Quercus Village recognizing the need to blend in and trying to work out what could be special about its dark secret.
Moses: A period of celebration… A closed village and unique customs. Not a good combination. Things like this usually follow a formula. And the formula usually ends with creepy cannibalism ceremonies or cultic carnage parties.
  • Older Than They Look: Moses looks like a woman in her late 20s to 30s, but she's actually 49 years old.
  • Only Sane Man: She is initially the only person who she cannot see any sign of the Distortion in, making her wonder about her place in the seemingly World Gone Mad.
  • Past Experience Nightmare: After being shot by the Marksman of the Mist, she had a flashback where Dias appeared in front of her alongside a man heavily implied (and confirmed via translator note) to be Benjaminnote  trying to recruit her to help start the Smoke War that destroyed former L Corp. so Ayin can take over its District. Her actions during the war, fighting on Dias' orders, traumatized her a lot.
  • Smoking Is Cool: Carries a smoking pipe with her, which also acts as her E.G.O weapon/Psychoment.
  • Warrior Therapist: Her role as Fixer in "solving" Distortions is incredibly similar to psychiatric aid.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Admittedly, one of the reasons she wishes to atone. Among her deeds as part of the Udjat, she ordered the death of a family which she acknowledged may have included children, though it's not confirmed if it actually did.

     Ezra
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ezra_portrait.png

Gender: Female

Birthday: January 27

Age: 28 yrs.

Affiliation: Seven Association, Limbus Company Distortion Dept. (LCD)

Fixer Grade: 3

Height: 6'2''

Moses' assistant, who specializes in hectic combat and request fee negotiations.

  • Bag of Holding: Ezra carries around a dimensional bag that allows her to haul around multiple large items (mostly weapons) without dealing with constraints like bulk or weight.
  • Big Eater: One of the things Ezra is most vocal about is her love of food. Whenever she and Moses go anywhere, she's always keenly curious to know about whatever local delicacies there might be to try out.
  • Big Guy, Little Guy: The big guy to Moses's little guy. She's also a Grade 3 while Moses is a Grade 5.
  • Bio-Augmentation: It's noted by Moses in Chapter 37 that Ezra has undergone several expensive procedures to strengthen and improve her body, which accounts for both her present-day size and strength and the fact she was very large for her age even as a child.
  • The Bus Came Back: Ezra returns as an employee in Limbus Company during it's first anniversary event - after the original publication of Distortion Detective was cancelled in favour of a game following the same characters - alongside an unheard Moses, to take custody of Bamboo-hatted Kim and Aeng-du at the end of the event's story.
  • Child Soldiers: Was one in the past when she was a member of the Udjat under Moses's direct leadership.
  • Girly Bruiser: In contrast to Ezra's massive size and preference for a hands-on brawler mode of fighting, she's very attracted to cute things of all sorts. Even going as far as to attach cutesy stickers to all of her belongings, including her weapons.
  • Stepford Smiler: Several of the Distortions faced by Moses' Office cause Ezra to drop her happy-go-lucky personality, revealing it to be a mask for her trauma from fighting in the Smoke War.
  • Terrible Artist: Made a very crudely drawn map of the City which, ironically, was the only source we have for the City's actual size and layout for a long time. That is, until Limbus Company came out with a map of higher quality.

     YuRia
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yuria_portrait.png

Gender: Female

Birthday: July 15

Age: 21 yrs.

Affiliation: Unknown

Grade: Meister (self-proclaimed)

Height: 5'7''

The owner of a workshop known as "YuRia Atelier", who commands an army of large red teddy bears. As of Chapter 13, her consciousness is currently trapped within the body of a small teddy bear.

  • The Blacksmith: Her workshop, "YuRia Atelier", is one of the best workshops in District 14. One Syndicate even took a job from YuRia just so they could gain membership to her workshop.
  • Forced Transformation: As a side effect of wanting to be rid of unpleasant thoughts brought upon her by the stream of flesh and Distortions in Chapter 11, the teddy bear on YuRia's waist resonated with her emotions and transferred her consciousness into it. She and the rest of the Moses Office have yet to figure out how to reverse this.
  • Killer Teddy Bear: Commands a seemingly infinite supply of large, red teddy bears. They can serve as bodyguards or assistants performing chores in her workshop.
  • Steampunk: Traces of this.

     Vespa Crabro
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vespa_portrait.png

Gender: Male

Birthday: January 24

Age: 24 yrs.

Affiliation: N Corp. (formerly), Moses' Office (currently)

Fixer Grade: 1

Height: 6'4''

A taboo hunter for N Corp. He and Moses' Office first encounter one another after YuRia breaks District 14's taboo of recording footage. Since Chapter 27, he's been expelled from N Corp. and currently works alongside Moses' Office.

  • Animal Motifs: Vespa has a strong bee/hornet motif going for him, from his black-and-yellow color scheme, his Distortion being bee wings, as well as him being named after a type of hornet.
  • Berserk Button: Syndicates, especially the Thumb. He wipes out a whole party of Kurokumo Clan members even after Moses and co. had appeased them, and his interactions with the Thumb are... tense. Capo Isabelle hints that he may have had affiliations with them in the past.
  • Big Eater: Although he, like many Grade 1 Fixers, is capable of surviving for long periods with minimal to no food, Vespa is noted to be very predisposed to large portions when such are available. Food is even listed in his official bio as one of his likes.
  • Bio-Augmentation: Moses theorizes that Vespa has likely undergone a few of these, as its extremely common for Fixers of his caliber in order to stand up to stronger foes and to survive much harsher conditions than the average human. She may well be correct, given his noted feats include leaping from the ground to the seventeenth story of a building while carrying two women, casually punching the head off of someone fast enough no one can react, and being able to withstand two weeks without food save for Moses' severed arm and emerge from captivity still fully capable of fighting off several foes at once.
  • Clothing Damage: After escaping YuRia's atelier and helping Moses and Ezra escape the danger of the Distorted villagers, Vespa is described as having had his shirt and jacket shredded from all the fighting. To the point that Moses requests a shirt for him when they're found by the Udjat forces, implying he's showing a lot of bare skin in the aftermath.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: When a small group of Kurokumo Clan members attempts to extort Moses' group for money to pass through into the L Corp Nest, Vespa maintains his composure even as they demand exorbitant amounts of money that Moses is willing to hand over to not make a fuss. Until their leader puts out a cigarette on their car's side mirror, at which point he punches their head clear off their shoulders before anyone can blink. And then proceeds to kill all the other members of their group for good measure.
  • Easily Forgiven: Moses holds no real grudges against Vespa for cutting off or even later eating her arm when he's trapped in YuRia's atelier for weeks, nor for his attempts to arrest and drag everyone back to N Corp for violating the taboo of recording in their Nest. She and the rest actually end up accepting him fairly quickly into their group, and Moses herself regards him as someone with a decent heart despite it all. It's actually justified since Moses could buy a new arm at any time.
  • Form-Fitting Wardrobe: Art of Vespa in his taboo hunter outfit depicts him with a shirt that's so snugly fitted to his body that it may as well be vacuum sealed. The outfit he's drawn in later is less so.
  • Meaningful Name: "Vespa crabro" is the scientific name for the European hornet.
  • No Party Like a Donner Party: While trapped within the YuRia Atelier, Vespa, having nothing else to eat within the isolated workshop, resorts to eating Moses's original arm, which he had been keeping on himself since his confrontation with her in Chapter 19.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: His relationship with the rest of Moses' Office is particularly tense due to the fact that he was initially a taboo hunter tasked with hunting them all down and his failure to do so resulted in his expulsion. At the moment, he works with Moses' Office for the sole purpose of getting a chance to reclaim his former position with the help of Dias.
  • Token Good Teammate: Granted that the major N Corp employees in Limbus Company are Mad Scientists or Ax-Crazy Psychos for Hire, it's lucky that he's no heartless monster.
  • Younger Than They Look: Vespa is an intimidating and buff man, but he's actually just 24 years old.

     Han Hee-joon
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hee_joon_portrait.png

Gender: Male

Birthday: July 20

Age: 37 yrs.

Affiliation: Seven Association (HQ Section 2)

Fixer Grade: 2

Height: 5'7''

A Fixer working for the Seven Association and a former subordinate of Moses. He acts as Dias' right hand man.

  • The Dragon: To Dias. He acts as more or less her personal assistant, delivering messages for her, leading squadrons of her Udjat in her stead for missions, and being the one in charge of overseeing Moses's mission being sent into L Corp's fallen Nest.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Moses managed to get him out of the Udjat, along with herself and Ezra. Unfortunately, he went back to Dias.
  • Foil: To Ezra. Both are subordinates of Moses (former, in Hee-joon's case), but Ezra is light-hearted and impulsive while Hee-joon is cold and calculating. Furthermore, Ezra stays loyal to Moses after leaving the Udjat, while Hee-joon goes right on back to Dias.
  • Four Eyes, Zero Soul: Wears glasses and has a relatively cold and uncaring personality.
  • Invisibility: His Distortion presents itself as this to a limited extent. While his clothes and such are visible, Moses describes his face and head totally transparent besides a floating set of eyes.
  • Mission Control: More or less acts as this to Moses and co in the fallen L Corp Nest. He's on call more or less 24/7 whenever Moses calls in and asks for information relevant to their job of gathering Distortions. The usefulness of such varies considering that the heavy fog in the Nest prevents a lot of immediate assistance.
  • Older Than They Look: Less so than Dias, but one could be mistaken for thinking Hee-Joon is in his twenties despite him actually edging towards forty.
  • Sweet Tooth: At least in regards to his coffee, which his character profile states he usually takes with three cubes of sugar.

     Dias
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dias_portrait.png

Gender: Female

Birthday: June 1

Age: Unknown

Affiliation: Unknown

Fixer Grade: Unknown

Height: 5'8''

"When one person’s pure ambition and another’s tragic obsession join together, a dream is destined to be born."

The leader of the Udjat and Moses' former superior.

  • Ambition Is Evil: Her goal is apparently to overthrow the Head and take its place, and she has no qualms against helping start an entire war, adopting orphans and training them into child soldiers, and having them slaughter innocents to fulfill her goal.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Very transparently so. She puts on a fake attitude of caring and kindness towards Moses and Ezra, whom she is intimately familiar with in exploiting, and regards Vespa with cold apathy, almost completely ignoring his existence.
  • Foil:
    • To Carmen. Both have red eyes which are described to be striking to those they meet, as well as highly charismatic personalities inspiring life-or-death devotion from their followers (in Dias' case, explicitly made out to be manipulation). Both are also driven by dreams of changing the City, though Dias' motivation is much more transparently self-serving. Notably, Dias is pursuing the Distortion, which Carmen is actively orchestrating.
    • Also greatly resembles Argalia, the two sharing a desire to overthrow the Head, an interest in the Distortion, similar methods of manipulation and false friendliness, and even having a similar wardrobe. Interestingly, the two are canonically active at the exact same time, as Distortion Detective takes place at the same time as Library of Ruina. However, despite his insanity and manipulative tendencies against other associations, Argalia forged genuine bonds with his fellow ensemble comrades, who never shown any signs in betraying each other or infighting despite differing ideologies, and he most probably genuinely cared for his sister. On the other hand, Dias is a Bad Boss who cares for absolutely nobody but herself.
  • Manipulative Bastard: While Hee-joon is the more explicitly manipulative, Dias' behind-the-scenes actions prove to be far worse in magnitude.
    • The members of the Udjat are driven by nothing but dedication to Dias, and in their key page story in Library Of Ruina they outright state their intention to be "stepping stones for her ascent to the top". If Dias indoctrinated them similarly to what she did with Moses, it's no surprise that they're so loyal... and chilling at just how much of a long game Dias is playing.
    • As seen in Nikolai's key page story from Library Of Ruina, Dias met with the Fourth Pack and coerced them to fight in the Smoke War in exchange for saving them from being purged by R Corp, which she admittedly followed through on.
  • Older Than They Look: Implied. While she looks a lot younger than Moses (who is 49 years old), Dias took Moses in when she was still a child. Indicating her actual age is around 70 or higher while showing zero signs of aging.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Dias is one of the few characters within the franchise to have red eyes, and she's easily one of the most dangerous people in the City.
  • Rich Bitch:
    • Dias spares no expense in the pursuit of her goals, whether it be for bribing authorities to ignore her subordinates' deeds, buying Moses a custom prosthetic arm-slash-tracking device, or even funding the Smoke War and sending her private army to fight in it.
    • The grand mansion Dias owns in District 11 is supposedly a mere vacation home which Dias cares for as much as "a pair of shoes stored in the corner of a closet that may or may not be worn someday." Moses further notes that Dias probably owns at least one such mansion in every one of the 26 Nests in the City.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Was noticeably more amoral than most of Moses' current hunting party, and is in fact hunting for them for her own goals.
  • We Have Reserves: The Udjat has hundreds of members, effectively being Dias' private mercenary army, and she sent them to fight in the Smoke War with no qualms whatsoever. Moses' realization that Dias saw her as only a tool also contributed to her leaving the Udjat.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Par for the course when one has their own private army which employs several child soldiers that she has no qualms about sending into a warzone for her own benefit.

Distortions

     The Photographer
A Distortion of a former mortician who distorted after noticing that nobody would show up to grieve for the people he had arranged funerals for.
  • Ret-Gone: He does this to anybody who he manages to get a complete photo of. After undistorting, he manages to reverse the process.

     The Mock Exam
The first location-based Distortion that Moses encounters. It is a school where students are forced to physically compete with each other as part of a so-called "Mock Exam" for the chance to become part of the "Scholarship Class". Those who fail to graduate as part of the scholarship class end up becoming empty husks.
  • Advancing Wall of Doom: Moses and co. come across a large white wall advancing towards them. Displayed on this wall is a calculus problem, and should one fail to solve this problem correctly, they will be crushed by the wall and forced to attend one of the classes.
  • Bizarre Alien Biology: Many of the students within this school have various limbs replaced with clusters of numbers. Some will only have a single limb replaced, like with Meryl, while others will look like a bunch of numbers in a school uniform.
  • Empty Shell: Depending on high the student is on the staircase by the end of the Mock Exam, knowledge and grades will be redistributed in varying quantities. Those at the very bottom of the staircase will end up having all of their knowledge taken from them and given to students higher up on the staircase, which ends up reducing those unfortunate students to mindless shells.

     Fei Lei (The Carp)
Daughter of Zhang Lei, the President of Dou Gui Combat Office. Her Distortion takes the form of a very large carp that's constantly wailing and glowing in a bright pink hue. This carp is trapped in an aquarium filled with talkative mermaids that seek to take the voices of other people.
  • Blood Is Squicker in Water: The water within the aquarium is blood-red, created mainly via the blood gushing from the carp's wounds.
  • Eye Scream: The mermaids inhabiting the aquarium possess no eyes, navigating via sound. It's stated that they gouge each other's eyes out to keep themselves from being lured by the light that the giant carp emits. This is also the ultimate fate for mermaids that do manage to be lured by the carp's light, as once the mermaid reaches a certain distance from the carp, long arms emerging from its mouth will pull the mermaid in for a kiss before proceeding to gouge that mermaid's eyes out, leaving it to helplessly bleed to death.
  • Intangible Theft: The mermaids seek out voices to add to their own voice, doing so by kissing the lips of people. They tend to do this in exchange for giving people information.
  • Our Mermaids Are Different: The mermaids within the aquarium resemble koi fish with long hair and human faces.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Fei had become a Distortion out of the presumption that her friends at school were envious and hateful of her for her voice, since they had come to care only for Fei's singing voice, and not so much the songs she wrote. As a result of these feelings, Fei had one-sidedly pushed her friends away, leaving her alone. The aquarium was created as a place for Fei to vent her anger and pain.
  • Sketchy Successor: What Moses predicts she will be, given her age, after her father is killed by Vespa and Fei inherits his position as President.
  • Words Can Break My Bones: Whenever the mermaids make negative comments about the carp or its voice, their words will manifest as red thorns that fly off towards the carp. The thorns will then impale the carp's skin, causing it to emit a loud shriek out of pain.

     Laundry of Dreams
A location-based Distortion that appears initially as an ordinary laundromat. When somebody deposits a coin from its exchange machine, however, they become compelled to take off their human skin and throw it into the laundromat, replacing their former skin with a "clean" one, becoming a completely different person in the process.
  • Eldritch Location: It looks like an ordinary laundromat, but instead of clothes, it's human skin that's being washed. There's also the moments where the room's geometry would end up warping in various ways on occasion, such as when the ceiling and floor switched places.
  • Flaying Alive: Those who get affected by the Distortion will proceed to remove their own skin by zipping it off in a manner akin to removing a full-body suit. When Ezra does this herself, Moses can't stand the sight, and orders Vespa to keep his eyes closed to keep his mind from being affected.

     The Human Thunderbolt
A Distortion that takes the form of violet lightning in a humanoid form. It moves incredibly fast and can utilize electric discharges to control multiple corpses at once.
  • Fragile Speedster: It moves incredibly fast, making it difficult for Moses and her team to capture it. The moment Moses manages to pin it down, however, it takes only a single blow from Vespa to take it out.
  • People Puppets: It primarily utilizes its electric discharges to control and manipulate large numbers of corpses to attack for it.
  • Shock and Awe: Unsurprising given its name, the Human Thunderbolt can discharge massive amounts of electricity to create explosions, though this is not its primary method of attack.

     Marksman of the Mist
A gunman, and one of the more sapient Distortions encountered. He wields a rifle that shoots bullets that inflict psychological damage rather than physical damage.
  • Affably Evil: For a Distortion that's killed dozens for no reason other than intruding on his territory, the Marksman is surprisingly cordial. He has a series of loudspeakers set up throughout his area so he can talk to those within and explain to them who he is and how his powers work, allows Moses to take a bullet for Ezra without issue. He also explains to the Detective how the process works, and once Moses survives the experience, he becomes outright friendly and helpful towards her group.
  • Bottomless Magazines: Averted. Even though his bullets are imbued with his Distortion and lack any properties of normal bullets, he does need actual bullets to use his ability. This gets him into trouble with the Thumb, as he's been stealing from their supplies for ammo.
  • Villain Respect: He's immensely impressed with Moses overcoming the effects of one of his bullets, to the point he outright offers assistance to her group even after they catch him.
    • He extends his admiration to Edgar as well after he manages to do the same.
Marksman of the Mist: Amazing! Another who possesses a spirit of steel! How serendipitous of me to witness two people triumph over my bullets in a single day!

     Larierre
An old woman who owns Hotel Larierre. She is a Bloodfiend whose existence predates the White Nights and Dark Days.
  • Affably Evil: She is a Bloodfiend that will do whatever she can to gain more blood and to stay alive. That being said, she also protects those that she plans to drain blood from and she avoids killing whenever she can.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: After she's finished draining the blood of her victims for the night, said victims will forget that she's done so in the first place, allowing her to protect her identity as a Bloodfiend.
  • Ms. Exposition: Her interactions with Moses provides the audience with much of the information we currently know about the culture of Bloodfiends.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: She's perfectly willing to drain blood from her victims like all of her other fellow Bloodfiends. She does not, however, kill her victims, preferring to keep them alive, as it avoids drawing unnecessary attention to her kind. This is, in fact, one of the reasons why she doesn't think highly of some of the more notorious Bloodfiends such as the Blood-Red Night, as they draw unnecessary attention with their killings. This is in fact, one of the main traits that separate the older Bloodfiends from their newer counterparts.
