    Elin

Voiced by: Nanase Hoshii

The heroine of the series.

  • Adaptation Dye-Job: The second volume of the original Japanese novels describes her hair as straw-colored. Itoe Takemoto depicts her with dark hair in the manga and the illustrations of the Aoi Tori Bunko versions of the novels. The anime gives her green hair to match her green eyes.
  • Child of Forbidden Love: She's the product of a forbidden union between an Ahlyo woman and a non-Ahlyo man. The stigma is so intense that the results of such unions are called Akun Meh Chai, meaning "devil-bitten child".
  • Fingore: Leelan goes into a blind rage and bites three of Elin's fingers off.
  • Fluffy Tamer: Elin is able to tame and communicate with Royal Beasts. It's justified because she takes some time to observe them and learn their "language". Leelan grows up with her and sees Elin as her surrogate mother.
  • Half-Breed Discrimination: Elin is the child of an Ahlyo woman and a non-Ahlyo man. The results of such unions are called Akun Meh Chai, meaning "devil-bitten child", because their parents should have never met, let alone fall in love.
  • Happily Adopted: Zigzagged. After the death of her mother, she is happily raised by Joeun but never officially adopted, preferring to go to Kazalumu rather than get married as a member of a noble family.
  • Harmful to Minors: Elin sees her mother getting Eaten Alive by wild Toda at only ten.
  • Hates Their Parent: Yuyan's discussion with Elin about her Ahlyo heritage makes Elin realize how much she's been hurt by the callous treatment of her by her paternal relatives and Asan, her foster father's biological son. She comes to consider her paternal grandfather "no better than trash" for letting Toda attack his Ahlyo daughter-in-law and young granddaughter.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: Elin is called "Erin" in the Crunchyroll subtitle of the anime.
  • Parental Abandonment: Elin lost her father, Asson, when she was very young. At only ten, she loses her mother, Sohyon, to the Judgment of the Toda, a capital punishment reserved for informers and traitors of the Aluhan.
  • Replacement Goldfish: In the anime, she strongly resemblances Kiriku's dead sister. Because of this, Kiriku tries to protect her from Damiya and later turns against his employer for her sake.
  • What Beautiful Eyes!: Damiya compliments Elin's green eyes, saying that they explain why the Ahlyo are rumored to have magic.

Yojeh's Family

    In General
The royal family of Lyoza. They're in charge of the west side of the country. The people of Yojeh territory are known as the Holon.
  • Color-Coded Eyes: Jeh and her people had golden eyes, which her royal descendants inherit.
  • Family Theme Naming: Nearly every one of the Yojeh family has names that end with "-miya".
  • Foreign Ruling Class: The Yojeh's family is descended from a golden-eyed woman named Jeh who gathered survivors of an indigenous kingdom when she crossed the Afon Noah after the war against the Toga mi Lyo caused the fall of Ofahlon.
  • God-Emperor: The Yojeh is the queen of Lyoza revered as a pure and selfless descendant of the gods beyond the Afon Noah, the mountains believed to separate their world from the human world.
  • Heir Club for Men: Inverted. The title of the Yojeh is passed down from mother to daughter because Jeh, the Founder of the Kingdom, was a woman.
  • Royal Inbreeding: The women in the Yojeh family often marry their uncles or cousins to protect the sanctity of their bloodline.

    Halumiya

Voiced by: Ikuko Tani

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/halumiya.png

The Yojeh, the political and spiritual leader of Lyoza. She doesn't know much about her ancestor, Jeh, or the Royal Beast Canon because the Sai Gamulu killed her mother and grandmother when she was very young.

  • A Child Shall Lead Them: Halumiya ascended to the throne at only five after the deaths of her mother and grandmother.
  • Death by Falling Over: Her ship is attacked by a Toda troop in an assassination attempt, but she gets hurt only from falling and hitting her head. It takes a few days until she dies of a brain hemorrhage.
  • Heritage Disconnect: When Elin has an audience with Halumiya, Halumiya reveals that, due to losing her mother and grandmother to a terrorist attack at a young age, she didn't get to keep her heritage beyond the official founding myth of their kingdom. Halumiya is grateful when Elin tells her about the origins of her ancestor Jeh.
  • Missing Mom: Her mother, Meemiya, died in the burning of the palace by the Sai Gamulu.
  • Nice Girl: She's a gentle and kind woman.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: Halumiya's only daughter and son-in-law died in a traffic accident, leaving her to raise her granddaughter, Seimiya, who was no older than six by then.

    Seimiya

Voiced by: Mikako Takahashi

Halumiya's granddaughter and heir.

  • Parental Abandonment: She lost her parents to a traffic accident, leaving her in the care of her maternal grandmother, Halumiya.

    Damiya

Voiced by: Akira Ishida

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/damiya.png

Halumiya's nephew.

  • Adaptation Dye-Job: The cover of Volume 7 of the manga depicts him with red hair. In the anime, however, he has blonde hair just like his relatives.
  • And Now You Must Marry Me: He manipulates Seimiya into agreeing to marry him as the only option available.
  • The Dog Was the Mastermind: Damiya is introduced as someone who loves to make light of everything, to the annoyance of Seimiya. With the help of Elin, Ialu figures out that Damiya is responsible for the assassination of the Yojeh Halumiya.
  • Evil Nephew: Damiya orchestrates the assassination of his aunt, Halumiya, for his ambition to rule Lyoza as the new Yojeh's husband.
  • Evil Uncle: Seimiya affectionately calls Damiya "Uncle", though technically speaking, he's her first cousin once removed. She renounces their engagement after learning from Elin that he orchestrated the assassination of the Yojeh Halumiya for his ambition to rule Lyoza as the Yojeh's husband.
  • Frame-Up: He frames the Aluhan for the assassination of the Yojeh Halumiya through the use of a Toda troop, taking advantage of the fact that the Toda are the symbol of the Aluhan. Elin, a daughter of Toda Stewards, is able to see through the deception because the Toda used during the assassination have no marks identifying which village has raised them.
  • I Have Your Wife: He holds all people at Kazalumu hostage to make sure Elin cooperates with him.
  • The Kingslayer: Damiya orchestrates the assassination of the Yojeh Halumiya through the use of a Toda troop.
  • Kinslaying Is a Special Kind of Evil: Damiya orchestrates the assassination of his aunt, the Yojeh Halumiya, for his ambition to rule Lyoza as the new Yojeh's husband. Ialu and Seimiya both find it abominable, motivating the latter to accept Shunan's proposal for the good of the kingdom at the expense of the purity generations of Yojeh have protected for three centuries.
  • Pretty Boy: He is described as tall, slender, and effeminately beautiful.
  • Relationship Sabotage: Damiya does everything he can to destroy the relationship between Shunan and Seimiya. He succeeds for a while.
  • Romancing the Widow: His significant others include aristocratic widows.
  • Villainous Crush: Damiya takes a fancy to Elin during their encounter, complimenting her green eyes and promising to protect her. He also seems to be impressed when Elin doesn't buy his sweet talk and is overly fascinated by her ability to control Royal Beasts, comparing her to the royal ancestor, Jeh, when she rides on Leelan to rescue the Yojeh Halumiya, whose assassination he orchestrates.

    Jeh

Voiced by: Risa Mizuno

The royal ancestor of the Yojeh from three centuries before the events of the series. She was responsible for the creation of the Royal Beast Canon.
  • The Exile: She was banished from her people because she ended up destroying Ofalon.
  • Founder of the Kingdom: She was the founder of the Divine Kingdom of Lyoza, making her the first Yojeh.
  • Identical Grandson: In the manga, Jeh looks exactly like Seimiya, her youngest descendant from three centuries later.

Aluhan Family

    In General
The ruling family of Lyoza's east side. They're in charge of the military aspect of the country. The people of Aluhan territory are known as the Wajak.

    The Aluhan

Voiced by: Taiten Kusunoki

The Grand Duke of Lyoza.

    Shunan

Voiced by: Eiji Hanawa, Saya Horigome (Young)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shunan.png

The Aluhan's older son and heir.

  • Adaptation Dye-Job: Itoe Takemoto depicts him with grey hair in the manga. The anime gives him black hair instead.
  • Altar Diplomacy: Shunan wants to unite the two conflicting territories of Lyoza through his marriage to Princess Seimiya. Although they're attracted to each other, she and many other people find his idea outrageous because the Aluhan is meant to accept the defilement of killing for the Yojeh. She ultimately accepts his proposal for the good of the kingdom.

    Nugan

Voiced by: Naru Kawamoto, Ikumi Nakagami (Young)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nugan.png

Shunan's younger brother. Admiring his ancestor, Yaman Hasalu, he believes that the Aluhan should accept defilement for the Yojeh.

  • Big Brother Worship: Nugan mentions that he held his older brother, Shunan, on a pedestal, at least before their bitter Sibling Rivalry began.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Nugan betrays his brother and father to fight alongside Damiya's forces.
  • Hero-Worshipper: He admires his ancestor, Yaman Hasalu, as a hero who accepted the defilement of bloodshed not for personal gain, but for the Yojeh and her people.
  • Patricide: When the Yojeh Seimiya accepts Shunan's marriage proposal to unite the two territories of Lyoza, Nugan murders his own father in the belief that the man is a traitor who seeks to subject the Yojeh alongside his brother rather than accepting defilement for her.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: Nugan is desperate to earn more respect and attention from his father, the Aluhan, who seems to prefer his older brother, Shunan.

Ahlyo

    In General
The People of the Mist. A nomadic group noted for their tall height and green eyes. The term Ahlyo is a corruption of their true name, the Aoh-Loh (meaning "People of the Law").
  • Adaptation Dye-Job: Itoe Takemoto depicts them with dark hair in the manga and the illustrations of the Aoi Tori Bunko versions of the novels. The anime gives them green hair to match her green eyes.
  • Ancient Tradition: They are the only ones to know about the Dark Secret of Lyoza. They are mainly passive observers, only making sure that an ancient catastrophe doesn't strike again.
  • Color-Coded Eyes: They have green eyes, a dominant genetic trait that makes both them and their descendants easy to identify. Their ancestors, the Toga mi Lyo, are named after the color of their eyes.
  • Curtains Match the Window: In the anime, they have green hair to match their green eyes.
  • Maligned Mixed Marriage: They are forbidden to marry outside their people. Outsiders don't seem to think highly of marrying them either, so much so that they call the result of such a union Akun Meh Chai, a devil-bitten child.
  • Offing the Offspring: Discussed. The inspector in the prologue tells a rumor that the Ahlyo would kill even their own children for breaking the Law. The rumor is groundless, however; as Nahson explains to Elin, the Law forbids them from taking a life except for food.
  • People of Hair Colour: In the anime, they have green hair to match their green eyes.

    Sohyon

Mok (left) and Nuk (right)

Two former thieves from Aluhan territory. They were asked by an unknown man to steal Toda eggs for a large amount of money but failed in doing so, meeting Elin in the process. Because of her kindness towards them, they vowed to stay by her side to "repay her." They become Joeun's helpers on his ranch and the head handymen of Kazalumu later.

    Kiriku

Voiced by: Toshiyuki Kusuda

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kiriku.png

A new Master who transfers from Tamuyuan, a prestige beastenarian school. He is secretly a member of the Psi-Gaml whose sister was killed by poison from a Wajyaku. Kirik is under orders from Damiyah and is assigned undercover as a teacher in Kazalum. He is very knowledgeable about poison and always has a eerie smile. He first sees Erin as a potential weapon, but later wants to protect her because she resembles his sister.

  • Cynicism Catalyst: Tahya, Kiriku's sister, was poisoned by their foster family. Her death is a reason why Kiriku hates the Wajak, the people of Aluhan territory, and starts working for Damiya.
  • Freudian Excuse: He starts working as a prisoner against the Wajak after his sister was killed by their foster family.
  • Heel–Face Turn: He finally abondons Damiya.
  • Redemption Earns Life: He is revealed to be alive at the end, now working as a traveling doctor.
  • Secret Secret-Keeper: Kiriku accidentally overhears how Elin tells Ialu about her past.
  • Self-Made Orphan: He poisoned his adoptive parents to death after they killed his birth parents and sister.

  • Adaptational Job Change: He retires from the Se Zan and settles down with Elin. In the anime, however, he becomes a harp maker instead of a cabinetmaker.
  • Taking the Bullet: He takes an arrow meant for the Yojeh Halumiya at an assassination attempt. He manages to run up to her in time not only for that but to actually shoots an arrow back at the attacker.
