  • Adaptational Heroism: He never becomes a killer in this version, and shows some noble traits.
  • Beware the Quiet Ones: He's a nerd who mostly keeps to himself, but he would have defeated Ryuhei in a fight had it not been for Hiroshi's intervention.
  • Butt-Monkey: Treated as such by the Kiriyama family.
  • Cowardly Lion: Stands up to Ryuhei and almost wins the fight against him in the process.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Tries this against Mitsuru of the Kiriyama family, but it doesn't really work out for him. He tries again later against Ryuhei, and becomes the first death of the version as a result.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: The first student to die.

  • Battle Boomerang: His designated weapon that quickly gets destroyed by Fumiyo in the same incident that costs Keita his fingers.
  • Dirty Coward: Almost abandons Fumiyo to die at Noriko's hands, her screaming his name is the only thing that stops him from running away. He dies as a result.
  • Fingore: A couple of his fingers are blown off by accident by Fumyio.
  • Nervous Wreck: Doesn't take being forced into the Program very well at all, and generally remains a mess the entire time.

  • Adaptational Heroism: Unlike his book counterpart, he doesn't immediately try to attack people and keeps a cooler head overall.
  • The Farmer and the Viper: Saves Yuichiro from committing suicide. Yuichiro responds by shooting him.

  • Narcissist: He's quite profoundly self-absorbed.
  • Smug Snake: Probably one of the most insufferable and selfish students, and with an astounding level of misplaced confidence in himself and his own abilities.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Clearly thinks he's a much bigger deal than he is; the other students who think of him at all largely do so with disdain.

  • Jerkass: Proves to be a real piece of work, even compared to his fellow delinquents.
  • Miles Gloriosus: Ryuhei suffers from an inflated view of himself.
  • Motor Mouth: Whether he's talking or thinking, he goes a mile a minute.
  • Murder by Mistake: Ryuhei's attempt to poison Mitsuru ends up killing Yoshitoki by mistake.
  • Rewarded as a Traitor Deserves: He attempts to murder Mitsuru, but winds up getting killed by him in return.
  • Token Evil Teammate: He is not only the biggest jerk of the Kiriyama group, he's also the most villainous in-game.

  • Martial Pacifist: Practices martial arts in his spare time, but is one of the more peaceful students who prefers non-violent means.
  • Muscles Are Meaningless: One of the strongest students in class, but he is killed very quickly. Many of his classmates are shocked to hear him among the first deaths.

  • Diabolus ex Machina: He had a strong trio with Hirono and Kyoichi and the beginnings of an escape plan. He then got shot by an anonymous assailant while enjoying a night in with his allies.
  • Foil: To Kyoichi Motobuchi. Sho is openly gay and one of the stronger students while Kyoichi is closeted and frail in comparison.
  • Gayngster: Sho is openly gay and a member of the class' biggest delinquent group.
  • The Smart Guy: He considers himself this among the Kiriyama family.

  • Beware the Nice Ones: Shūya's a sweet guy, but discovering that his class was being put in the program enraged him enough to make him attempt to charge Sakamochi. Only Numai's intervention prevented his early death.
  • Diegetic Soundtrack Usage: Shūya is an avid fan of Rock music, a fact reflected in his writing; many of his posts contain the lyrics of songs, particularly those of Bruce Springsteen.
  • Even the Guys Want Him: Shūya is considered attractive by Sho Tsukioka, who notes at one point that "Nanahara had that boy-next-door charm."
  • Manifesto-Making Malcontent: When Sakamochi demands the entire class declare their intent to kill, Shūya refuses; instead, he writes a manifesto declaring his intent to resist the government:

私は誰も殺しません。

I won't kill anyone.

私は平和のために戦う。

I will fight for peace.

私はロックの力を信じる。

I believe in the power of rock music.

  • Honor Before Reason: Abandons his weapon before the program starts out of spite to his captors.
  • Rebel Leader:Shūya declared his open rebellion against the government of the Republic of Greater East Asia in an announcement across the island.
  • Velvet Revolution: Shūya, a pacifist, refuses to take up arms, even against the oppressive government; instead, his rebellion is entirely non-violent.

  • Enlightened Self-Interest: Plans to do this by saving the class, and more particularly, the girls in his class.
  • Hypocritical Humor: In a memory thread, he blames his teacher and his mother for the fact that he fails a test, and then immediately blows off studying to read a comic book.
  • Jerk Jock: A soccer player with a seriously bad attitude.
  • Never My Fault: Taken up to eleven. It's one of the reasons Takako can't stand him.
  • Undignified Death: Bled out after being shot in the groin.

  • Everyone Has Standards: In a memory thread, he gets angry with a man who took a seat on a train that Numai was attempting to save for an old woman. Later, during the program's orientation, he tackles Shuya to keep him from attacking Sakamochi and getting himself killed.
    • In the game itself, he also restrains himself from killing Yoshio in a fight, and get upset with Ryuhei for starting another fight that led to Yoshio's death.
  • Only Sane Man: He definitely feels this way around Ryuhei and Hiroshi.

  • Driven to Suicide: Decides to end his life over his guilt of killing Kaori, with some encouragement for Yuichiro.
  • Together in Death: Subverted. He agrees to die with Yuichiro after he confesses his feelings towards Tadakatsu by jumping off the lighthouse together, only for Yuichiro to be saved by Tatsumichi at the last minute.

  • Abusive Parents: Of the emotional variety. Her parents were very restrictive, disapproving, and dismissive of her, ultimately telling her to her face that they had given up on her.
  • Apologetic Attacker: She pounces on Yuichiro out of paranoia, and immediately withdraws and apologizes out of shame.
  • The Bully: A rather notorious one among the girls, and she realizes that this reputation is a problem for her in the game.
  • Cop/Criminal Family: Hirono is a delinquent with a cop for a dad.
  • Freudian Excuse: Hirono's parents have been putting her down for her entire life, which led to her becoming an impulsive delinquent with a poor self-image.
  • Heel Realization: She hadn't realized how much her bullying affected her classmates until Megumi spelled it out for her.
  • Hidden Depths: More adept at schoolwork than she lets on, and only gets better after her homeroom teacher compliments her on it.

    • Get Out!: Shrieks this at Keita after shooting him.
  • The Medic: Helps out at school as the nurse aide, and tries to make up for blowing Keita's fingers off by covering the stumps with liquid before wrapping them in gauze.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: She managed to get out of the classroom this time.

  • Vorpal Pillow: In a panic, she killed Yuka Nakagawa this way.
