Appearing in all continuities

    Sonny
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sonny.png
The protagonist of this tale. Sonny is an amnesiac young man who wakes up on a sinking ship... as a zombie.

In general

  • Amazing Technicolor Population: He has green skin.
  • Amnesiac Hero: He's missing his memories, likely as an effect of the reanimation process.
  • Can't Drop the Hero: You can arrange the rest of your team as you like, but Sonny can never be removed from the party.
  • Casting a Shadow: He can get shadow skills through the Psychological class in Sonny 2 and the Shadow strain in the reboot.
  • The Hero: He's the one who the narrative focuses on.
  • An Ice Person: He can get ice skills through the Hydraulic class in Sonny 2 and the Frost strain in the reboot. He also has some water abilities lumped in there, making him overlap with Making a Splash.
  • Manual Leader, A.I. Party: You directly control Sonny's actions in battle, while the rest of the party is governed by the AI. You are able to give them general directions on how you want them to act in the status screen, though.
  • Our Zombies Are Different: Other than the whole "back from the dead" thing and his vastly increased physical abilities, he's not much different from an ordinary human.
  • Playing with Fire: He has a couple of stray fire skills in Sonny 1, and he can get fire skills through the Fire strain in the reboot.
  • Poisonous Person: He can get poison/nature skills through the Biological class in Sonny 2 and the Nature strain in the reboot.
  • Shock and Awe: He can get electric skills through the Psychological class in Sonny 2 and the Electric strain in the reboot.

In the original continuity

  • Character Development: He starts as a naive everyman before developing into a more stoic, goal-oriented character by Sonny 2.
  • Infinity +1 Sword: He gets an entire set of armor and a weapon at the end of Sonny 1, tailored to his specific class.
  • Think Nothing of It: After liberating Hew, he gives a "don't mention it".

In the reboot continuity

  • Adaptive Ability: He can evolve his abilities with random mutations as the fight goes on.
  • Mutually Exclusive Power-Ups: His strains function this way. Dr. Herregods can upgrade him to possess two additional skillsets, but any more than that makes his body unstable.

    Veradux
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/veradux.png
Sonny's first and most trusted companion.

In general

  • Boisterous Bruiser: Generally a rough and rowdy type of guy.
  • Combat Medic: He is primarily a healer, but his damage output isn't beyond salvation.
  • Healer Signs On Early: He is the party's primary medic, and he is always the first companion to join.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Sonny.
Sonny: So, how long do you plan on sticking around?
Veradux: Uh... until death do us part!
  • The Lancer: Generally acts as Sonny's number two.
  • Shock and Awe: One of his favorite moves is Electro Bolt, which does a little damage and dispells an enemy buff.
  • Undying Loyalty: He will follow Sonny to the ends of the earth.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: He often pokes fun at his comrades, particularly Sonny.

In the original continuity

  • Amazing Technicolor Population: He has purple skin.
  • Infinity +1 Sword:
    • In Sonny 1, he has to make do with the Paladin armor dropped by Galiant. Not that this is entirely a bad thing; that poison piercing boost comes in real handy.
    • In Sonny 2, he gets Dr. Klima's armor. This is notable in that other than his starting gear, Klima's gear is the only class-locked gear in the whole game.
  • Poisonous Person: He has the basic Zombie Poison attack in Sonny 1.

In the reboot continuity

  • Adaptation Species Change: In the originals, he was an intelligent zombie like Sonny. In the reboot, he's a human war veteran.
  • Handicapped Badass: He was crippled before the game's events, and now uses a suit of Powered Armor to walk and fight.
  • Metaphorgotten: Causes this to happen to Zakk during the fight against Cpt. Vendara.
Zakk: From you I sense a great flame, stranger!
    Vendara: ...
Zakk: The path your flame consumes has been littered with obstacles that must be removed, not burnt! They are innocent! But your flame is too strong and will consume without prejudice!
Veradux: Yeah! And like, water hurts fire, right? So I'm gonna piss on your fire and uhh, it won't consume nothin'!
Zakk: ...not my choice of words.
  • Powered Armor: His prototype InfectAid suit lets him move and fight.

Appearing in the original continuity

    Roald
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/roald.png
A member of a group dedicated to finding a cure for zombieism. By Sonny 2, he is in hiding in Oberusel.
  • Badass Normal: He's the only ordinary human in the party, yet he does just fine.
  • Defeat Means Playable: He has to be fought before he joins you.
  • Infinity +1 Sword: While he doesn't have an explicit set of gear per se, Yosuke's armor plays to all of his strengths very well.
  • Playing with Fire: His Shoot attack deals fire damage.
  • Violence is the Only Option: Subverted. He mistakes you for a mindless zombie and attacks, but once it becomes clear that you can still think, he stands down.

    Felicity
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/felicity_2.png
A mysterious woman who briefly clashes with Sonny.

Appearing in the reboot continuity

    Dr. Herregods
Originally appearing as a nondescript Superboss in Sonny, Dr. Tom Herregods is reimagined as an expert on reanimation living in a shack in the jungle.
  • Armor-Piercing Attack: His Eco Strike ignores defense completely.
  • Ascended Extra: Goes from a completely flat Superboss in Sonny 1 to a protagonist and major character in the reboot.
  • Combat Medic: Like Veradux, he can both heal and fight.
  • Poisonous Person: His Eco Strike does nature damage.
  • Puzzle Boss: In Sonny, you have to turn his insane healing against him with Subversion.
  • The Smart Guy: He is the party's primary expert on zombieism.
  • Superboss: In Sonny, he is the third of four bosses fought in The Infinity, an optional dungeon unlocked after the Final Boss is defeated.

    Kara
Karantha is an officer with the ZPCI who defects from them after being ordered to kill civilians.

    Zakk
Zakkiatherous Anerexon is a tribesman living in the frozen forests who wants revenge for his dead family.

Antagonists

Appearing in all continuities

    Baron Brixius
An immensely powerful zombie.

In general

In the original continuity

  • Ambiguously Gay: He makes several suggestive comments and is incredibly flamboyant.
  • Tactical Suicide Boss: In Sonny 2, when Baron Brixius runs out of Focus, he'll inflict the Deep Burning buff on himself to recover it, taking 5% of his max HP as damage every turn. Once his health gets lower than 50%, he will occasionally use the skill Holy Scars, which causes all damage dealt to him to be multiplied by 10. Without these skills, you aren't going to get through his HP pool.

In the reboot continuity

Appearing in the original continuity

    Galiant the Paladin
A powerful ZPCI officer who is encountered fighting Baron Brixius.

    The Mayor
Boris Livingstone is the incredibly corrupt mayor of Hew.

Appearing in the reboot continuity

    Vendara
Cpt. Vendara is a high-ranking ZPCI officer who develops an obsession with killing Sonny.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After seeing the Praetor's corruption firsthand, he allies with Sonny.
  • Hopeless Boss Fight: He's far beyond you the first time you encounter him, and all you can do is survive for two turns.
  • I Owe You My Life: He lowers a shield protecting Carbon's main base out of gratitude for Sonny sparing him.
  • It's Personal: He develops a grudge against Sonny that evolves into an obsession as the game goes on.
  • Redemption Earns Life: He's the only antagonist to redeem himself and the only one to survive.

    The Praetor
The commander of the ZPCI.
  • General Ripper: He will go to any extreme to eradicate the zombie infestation.
  • Unwitting Pawn: He gets duped by Carbon into creating a super-weapon that creates super zombies.

    Dr. Klima
Originally appearing as a nondescript Superboss in Sonny 2, Dr. Theodore Klima is reimagined as a scientist working along with the ZPCI, albeit one with his own agenda.
  • Ascended Extra: Goes from a completely flat Superboss in Sonny 2 to a major antagonist in the reboot.
  • Dragon with an Agenda: To the ZPCI; they think he's making them an anti-zombie superweapon, but he's actually the one creating the super zombies.
  • Evilutionary Biologist: He believes that the zombie infection is incurable and that humanity should embrace it instead of trying to fight the inevitable.
  • Mad Scientist: He's the one who created the super zombies, and he wants to capture Sonny so he can experiment on him.
  • Puzzle Boss: In Sonny 2, you have to turn his insane healing against him with Subversion or Retrograde.
  • Rule of Cool: His design philosophy on super zombies.
Dr. Klima: What's the point in a super zombie if they aren't enormous, part mech or just plain wicked AWESOME?
  • Superboss: In Sonny 2, he is the first of four bosses fought in Sho'Tul Shelf.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: In Sonny 2, he is functionally identical to Dr. Herregods from Sonny, both being superbosses that need to be brought down by turning their insane healing against them with Subversion/Retrograde.

    Carbon
The head of InfectAid, and the mastermind of the super zombie crisis.
  • Affably Evil: He's incredibly polite and friendly even as he plots to end the human race as we know it.
  • Big Bad: He's the main villain of the reboot.
  • Brain Uploading: As he dies, he mentions that he has copies of his brain stored across the world and people waiting to push the button and spawn Carbon #2. However, the party believes he's bluffing.
  • Evil Plan: He has duped the ZPCI into creating a super-weapon that can wipe out the human population and infect the survivors with the super zombie strain
  • Evilutionary Biologist: His ultimate goal is to turn all of humanity into super zombies.
  • Final Boss: Of the reboot.
  • One-Winged Angel: After thrashing his humanoid form, he turns into an oversized abomination for the final battle.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: Early in the final zone, he makes inappropriate remarks about Veradux (a handicapped veteran), Dr. Herregods (a doctor), Kara (a working woman), and Zakk (a foreigner).
Carbon: Then we got Veradux. Legs, I like to call him. My faithful employee. A lovable idiot, really. Thinks he's doing some good. We get applications from all these pathetic veterans. Bunch of scroungers, if you ask me. 'Ooohh! I wanna help but my legs don't work! Waahh, Carbon, please help me!' Sure, have a free robot suit. Don't pay a penny for it. Sure. I'll just GIVE it away.

Doctor Herregods, as I LIVE and BREATHE! Or should I say... MISTER Herregods? Not really supposed to be calling yourself a Doctor when you've had your license revoked, right? A shame, really. Real potential here, folks. This Doc was a bright fella. He really was. But when it came to the crunch... he broke his teeth. Too focused on stopping the virus, when it's clear we gotta BRING it IN for a hug.

Kara, last of the comedy cowboys. And let me say... a real waste of a woman. Give me a girl who bathes in water, not blood. I mean, sheeesh. Leave the big boy stuff to the big boys, know what I mean? I get it though. Don't go thinkin' I don't get a woman's brain! You're stuck between your job and your heart, right? Awww. It's real cute. Very motherly.

Then there's the guy from the stone-age over there. Your name I forget. I guess it's not that important to me. Rack? Jack? Mack? I don't know. I've got a real easy, real clear perspective on people who come from wherever it is you come from. We ought to build a big old wall and keep you out in the cold. Your backwards way of life has gotta be snubbed out. It's a waste. You understand? A waste.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Suffers one after you beat his first form.
