  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: After fleeing the labs beneath Carleon Castle, a mutated knight pursued him. As the child harmed his leg, he was unable to outrun him and collapsed. The soldier stabbed him in a Gory Discretion Shot.
  • Kid Hero: Was a child at the time of his first death.
  • Irony: In life, he wanted to be a hero like his father. In death, he kills dozens of them, culminating with his own father.
  • Losing Your Head: One of the 2 attacks his base form grants him involves chucking his head at enemies.
  • Power Copying: Skul's main ability, and main fighting style, is using the skulls of other warriors to gain their abilities. He can use two of them at the same time.
  • Protagonist Title
  • The Reveal: He is in fact the son of the First Hero, killed as part of a conspiracy by an unknown party to reignite the war between humans and demons so they can harvest and experiment with Dark Quartz.
  • Self-Made Orphan: Is forced to kill his own father at the end of the game.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: When he was still human, he was a nice and loving kid and wanted to follow in his father's footsteps and become a hero. However, he was also quite friendly to the Demon King when he met him.

The Witch

  • All Witches Have Cats: In addition to Voluntary Shapeshifting, she does have a white cat who acts as her pet/assistant.
  • Hot Witch: Not too evident in her sprite, but her portrait when talking to her is very sexy.
  • Humans Are Bastards: Despite being a human, she has come to believe in this as a result of being demonized by humans for her powers. This attitude resulted in a fatal mistake where she let the son of the First Hero get killed even though she was definitely in a position to save him.
  • Older Than They Look: The Witch does admit that she appears younger than her actual age.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: It was her research on Quartz that allowed Carleon to obtain enough power through Dark Quartz and start their genocidal campaign. Granted, her research was purely academic and had none of those torturing and suffering associated with Dark Quartz.

    The Fox Hunter

The Fox Hunter

  • Creepy Souvenir: He likes collecting skulls, and once rescued he will give Skul a new one for free at the Demon King's palace.
  • Visual Pun: He's not a hunter of foxes, he's a hunter who is a fox.

    The Ogre Peddler

The Ogre Peddler

  • Idiot Savant: Although the Ogre Peddler talks and acts like a simple-minded brute, Collector in Black Market notes that he has an uncanny knack for finding the best merchandises and considers him a rival.

Carleon

A human empire in Harmonia that breaks the peace treaty between humans and demons, and declares war on demonkind, invading their castle and taking everyone including the Demon King prisoner.
    In General
  • The Empire: They serve as a particularly cruel version of this.
  • Humans Are the Real Monsters: While the commonfolk are implied to be decent enough, the military and ruling powers of Carleon are shown to be almost comically corrupt and decadent, their knights arrogant murderers, their mages Mad Scientists, and their priests sycophantic tyrants obsessed with godhood. During the final battle, the First Hero outright admits that Carleon is mostly rotten, but he still fights for them because while the ruling class may be scum, the common folk are innocent and deserve his protection. Also, the current demon king makes it clear that demons were no different in the past and actively hurt humanity, which partially justifies the latter's hatred.

    The First Hero
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hero_1.png
A legendary man who leads the Imperial Army on their raid of the castle and the primary antagonist of the game.
  • Alas, Poor Villain: He believed that the new Demon King was trying to bring peace, but when he lost his child to an unknown third party and saw the Demon King near his body, his mind was utterly clouded with rage and grief, and declared war on demonkind. In his Last Stand, he refuses to stop fighting Skul, as he considers him and all other demons a menace to Carleon, and will never stop fighting to protect his nation despite its decadence and corruption. His last phase is a pathetic old man who has nothing left to lose, and as he finally lays dying all he can do is pitifully beg Skul to spare Carleon's commonfolk while lamenting how much he misses his son and how he wishes he had spent more time with him.
  • Archnemesis Dad: Due to him being Skul's father.
  • Big Bad: He's the one who kidnapped the Demon King and is trying to destroy demonkind.
  • Blood from the Mouth: In his final phase, he's so injured he vomits blood in the middle of the fight.
  • Broken Pedestal: His faith in the Emperor is completely shattered when he discovers his secret lab and the horrific Dark Quartz experiments he was conducting within it.
  • Cutscene Power to the Max: When Skul meets him at the beginning and after killing the Chimera, the first Hero beats him with a single attack.
  • Evil Laugh: When confronted at the end of a Dark Mirror run, instead of doing his Motive Rant like he does in the base game, he simply gives a dark chuckle before the fight immediately begins.
  • Fantastic Racism: There is no other human in Carleon that hates demons as much as him. He wants nothing but to kill every last one of them.
  • Fatal Flaw: Wrath and Stubborness: When his son died, his mind was utterly consumed with rage and hatred towards demonkind, due to the Demon King and the Witch being near his body. Despite the fact they tried to explain to him that it was a human who did that, and that they were trying to save his son, his sanity never recovered and he went on a rampage. For the rest of his life, he never stopped hating demons, all the way to his Last Stand, where he continued to rave on how he would kill them all.
  • Fights Like a Normal: As he himself admits at the start of his boss fight, unlike the rest of Carleon's military he refuses to use Dark Quartz to enhance himself. The same can't be said for his Dark Mirror counterpart.
  • Golden Super Mode: In his second phase, he manifests golden armor and goes all out.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Realizing the truth of the Emperor's plans and seeing the depths of his evil convinces the First Hero to put aside his vendetta against the Demon King and help Skul defeat his former master to save the world.
  • Inexplicably Awesome: There's no given reason for why he's so freakishly powerful, as he explicitly eschews using Dark Quartz and fights using only his own strength and magic. His given backstory even addresses that he was simply born like this, being monstrously powerful from a young age.
  • Last Stand: His fight with Skul amounts to this. By the end of the fight, he can barely stand, is unarmed and is bleeding from his mouth, and he still refuses to give up.
  • My Country, Right or Wrong: In his Motive Rant, he admits Carleon is a terrible place, with corrupt noblemen and dark secrets, but he will still fight to protect his people, as there are still good-hearted men and women in the kingdom.
  • My Greatest Failure: The death of his first adventuring party and failing to save his son were this for him. The latter destroyed his sanity.
  • Not Quite Dead: As the 'Demon Castle Defense' update reveals, he was taken to some kind of healing tank by the Emperor's forces and has been able to recover from his loss against Skul, though he still appears to be sick.
  • Poor Communication Kills: The cause of much of the game's plot. He declared war on all of demonkind, blaming them for his son's death. Unfortunately, he never realized they had nothing to do with it, and in fact, the Demon King and the Witch would've saved his life if he hadn't attacked and nearly killed the Witch.
  • A Tragedy of Impulsiveness: If he hadn't let his wrath consume him and hadn't attacked and nearly killed the Witch, his son would've lived and he never would've gone mad with grief.
  • The Unreveal: He never finds out that Skul is his son. The Witch tries to tell him after the Emperor's defeat, but Skul stops her, believing its better that his father doesn't know he's become a Demon.
  • Why Don't You Just Shoot Him?: Despite wanting the Demon King dead more then anything for his perceived role in his son's death, he seems content to just leave the Demon King locked up in his stasis pod in the Sacred Grounds no matter how long it takes Skul to defeat him. Since Demon Castle Defense reveals that the Emperor needed the Demon King's power to complete his plan, its likely the First Hero had been ordered to keep the Demon King alive.

    Emperor Alexander (Spoilers unmarked)
The Emperor of Carleon, and the true mastermind behind the reignited war between Demons and Humans. Sometime after Skul defeats the First Hero and traverses the Dark Mirror, he attacks the Demon Castle with a new army of Dark Quartz enhanced soldiers.
  • Big Bad: He's the true villain of the game, having manipulated the First Hero into following his genocidal agenda.
  • Clipped-Wing Angel: Much like the First Hero's own final phase, his final phase sees him reduced to a decrepit old man who only has his own innate skills at his disposal, in his case his dark magic. However, the Witch empowers Skul with a special rune that grants him greatly enhanced health and attack power, meaning you actually have to try to lose.
  • Fantastic Racism: If you thought the First Hero's racism against Demons was bad, wait until you get a load of this guy. While the First Hero was at least willing to entertain the idea of a lasting peace with Demons until his son's death drove him mad, and even then only limited his wrath to the Demon King or anyone who stood in his way, Alexander makes it clear right from the get go that he will settle for nothing less then complete Demon genocide.
  • Frame-Up: He's the one who initially framed the Demon King for Skul's death after the boy witnessed one of his Dark Quartz experiments.
  • Grasp the Sun: As he finally dies, he reaches for the sky, delusionally believing that Leonia has come to personally escort him to the Primordial Realms.
  • Hate Sink: He is by far the most evil antagonist Skul faces throughout his journey. During the final battle, the Witch outright calls him the single most despicable individual she's ever had the displeasure of meeting.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: After beating his first phase, he admits that he considers the world of the Dark Mirror "beautiful" and the "ideal" form of Harmonia he hopes to create. Remember that the Dark Mirror world is a Death World where Demons are all but extinct and most of humanity has become Dark Quartz-enhanced abominations.
  • One-Winged Angel: Twice! His first phase has him transform right at the start into a wraith-like being, then he dons a massive Dark Quartz enchanced mecha for his second and third phase.
  • Sequential Boss: His final battle has four phases. First, he uses his Dark Quartz to transform into a wraith-like creature. Then he dons a Quartz-fueled Humongous Mecha. Then you fight his mecha form again, but this time with the Ghost and Dark Mirror Witch assisting you. Finally, you face him as a depowered, but still dangerous mage, with the First Hero himself as your support.
  • True Final Boss: He is the final and greatest threat Skul faces, and his defeat both wraps up the main campaign's lingering plot threads and definitively ends the conflict between the Demon Kingdom and Carleon.
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: After his mech form is destroyed, he feigns remorse for his crimes and pleads for mercy. Neither Skul or the Witch are fooled for a moment, so he immediately drops the act and zaps Skul while his guard is down.

The Adventurers

A group of powerful human fighters who hunt demons for sport. They teamed up with the First Hero and the Imperial Army to stage the assault on the Demon King's castle.
    In General
  • Guys Smash, Girls Shoot: The male adventurers all fight with melee weapons (though the Shinobi also uses shurikens) while the female adventurers all fight using projectiles (such as arrows or magic)

Swordsmen

    In General
  • The Rival: The Swordsman considers himself this to Skul, facing him the most out of all the Adventurers, even challenging him to a final duel in the Ramparts of Fate.
  • Sword Beam: Their special attack is to charge up and fire a wave from their swords.
  • Warm-Up Boss: Compared to the other Adventurer bosses, they have relatively straightforward and easy to read attack patterns.

Archers

    In General
  • Rain of Arrows: Their special attack is to unleash one of these.
  • Support Party Member: Not very dangerous on their own, since all their attacks are highly telegraphed. But they can be trouble when fighting another adventurer.

Paladins

    In General

Sorceresses

    In General

Shinobi

    In General

Priestesses

    In General
  • Damage-Sponge Boss: They've only got one attack that's pretty easy to avoid (and they won't even use if they're not alone)...but have way more HP than a healer ought to.
  • Shoot the Medic First: If there's one in a group encounter, you definitely want to kill her first.
  • Holy Hand Grenade: Their primary attacks are massive blasts of holy magic.
  • White Mage: Aside from chugging health potions like all other adventurers they are capable of healing a large chunk of their health if not take out of their charging animations.

The Imperial Army

Basic Troops

    In General
  • Mooks: The normal forces of Carleon's army.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Skul's murderer was a mutated soldier.

The Gold Mane Knights

Carleon's order of knights wearing gold.
    In General

    The Leiana Sisters

The Leiana Sisters, the Gold Mane Knights Adjutants

A pair of female knights who are high-ranking members of the Gold Mane Knights, and are the 2nd bosses in the game.
  • Dual Boss: They both fight Skul at the same time.
  • Expy: Gameplay wise, they seem to have been conceived as "Ornstein and Smough if they were sexy anime girls."
    • Alternatively, their basic slash and stab moves appear to have been taken directly from The Mantis Lords.
  • Technicolor Death: The first will just die, but the second will vaporize in a pillar of electric darkness.

The Religious Order of Leonia

Also known as the Leonists, they are a powerful cult of zealots who serve Carleon's goddess, Leonia, and defends Carleon Castle in an attempt to stop Skul from reaching the top and freeing the Demon King from captivity. They are the enemies in 'Ramparts of Fate', the fourth chapter in the game.
    In General
  • Light Is Not Good: Their priests will launch huge spheres of light at Skul.
  • Not Afraid to Die: Because of the Carleon Empire's increasing corruption, their religion was abused to create these zealous fanatics who have no fear of death, so they have no qualms of risking themselves or even sacrificing their own lives.

The Knights of the Holy Order

Also known as the Paladins of Leonia, they are the Leonist elites who are highly trained in combat and are way stronger and more agile than typical Carleon troops. They are imposing figures with an unwavering belief in Leonism and the Archbishop of the cult.
    In General
  • Elite Mooks: Being the Religious Order of Leonia's elites, they are much more powerful than even normal Carleon troops.

Others

    The Demon King

The Demon King

    Yggdrasil

Yggdrasil, the Elder Ent

A giant ent corrupted by the Dark Quartz and the first boss in the game.

    Chimera

Chimera, the Distorted Goddess

A giant, multi-headed beast corrupted by the Dark Quartz and the third boss in the game.
  • Cargo Cult: Carleon believe her to be the physical manifestation of Leonia, their goddess.
  • The Power of Hate: The Dark Quartz that covers her body makes her extremely powerful.
  • Turned Against Their Masters: Black Lab Chief most definitely didn't intend on Chimera's stomping on him.
