Main Characters

    Samus Eabha Aran
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ddmus7l_44651d28_2f78_4731_9955_7ba3a95ae103_8.png
At age twelve

The only daughter of Rodney and Virginia Aran, the sole survivor of K-2L, heiress of the Chozo and destined Hero of the Universe. Samus Aran is incredibly powerful, incredibly skilled, incredibly smart, incredibly well-equipped and perhaps most importantly; incredibly determined and kind.

  • Anger Born of Worry: Screams at Arne for his lack of concern for his own safety on planet Zorant and refuses to let either of them progress through the trial until they have a frank discussion about what's troubling him.
  • Badass Bookworm: Incredibly intelligent, knowledgeable, and with a brain capable of handling math that would give super computers conniptions and also one of the greatest warriors of human origin in existence.
  • Genki Girl: Incredibly, relentlessly cheerful and energetic. She loves life and all of its wonders.
  • Guile Hero: Samus despite her often aggressive and energetic attitude tends to try and take clever way around obstacles and is an expert puzzle solver.
  • Hair of Gold: While it starts off the second arc at only shoulder length, by Word of God she starts to grow it progressively longer later on in the story. But her distinctive blonde hair remains one of her most striking figures.
  • Head-Turning Beauty: Even at a very young age, she looks good enough to make her peers stop in awe of her appearance. Arne notably was smitten with her the second he laid eyes on her, and Ian was brought to a stammering halt just as quickly; and both Solveig and Yramil; girls notably, stopped to check her out upon seeing her.
  • Ideal Hero: Intelligent, kind, powerful, driven, passionate, helpful, gentle when she needs to be and furious at the sight of injustice; Samus has the kind of good heart that would make her worthy of something like Mjolnir.
  • Informed Judaism: Samus' mother Virginia is Jewish, which by Jewish law would also make her Jewish. However, due to being raised by the Chozo she's ingrained into an entirely different spiritual tradition.
  • No Social Skills: Tends to make a fool of herself when amongst peers who aren't knee-deep into Progenitor culture and needs to be walked around dealing with more normal children.
  • Official Couple: Completely tied the knot with Arne early into the second Arc; Forlorn. More than a year later and they still clearly love each other dearly.
  • Powered Armor: One of the most famous suits of it in all of video gaming gets a major starring role in Saga, being portrayed with the same sort of reverence that artifacts like the One Ring get in their own stories.
  • Religious Bruiser: An adherent to the faith of the Chozo of Zebes and proud of it.
  • Samaritan Syndrome: Her most defining character trait is ultimately her desire to shoulder everyone's burdens even if not prompted to or even at harm to herself.
  • Smart People Build Robots: Builds robots extremely frequently as a hobby alongside tinkering with power armour mechanics and starship design.
  • Socially Awkward Hero: With her friend circle before going to the Prodigal Academy hardly being anything resembling normal, she struggles more with basic social interactions with people who have had more conventional upbringings than with combat.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: Her and Arne's relation is doomed to end in fission. Though by Word of God they never really lose their feelings for each other even after Arne takes on the identity of Sylux and stages his disappearance. It's this lingering love for Arne that leads her to, once she figures out that Arne is Sylux, try everything she can to bring him back into the light.
  • Teen Genius: Incredibly intelligent, designing many of her own weapons, her ships, her power suit, and many other things, Samus figures her way out of most problems as often as she shoots her way through them and is a better scientist as a child than most are after years of adulthood.
  • Trauma Button: Absolutely loses any semblance of control over herself when overly exposed to stimuli that strongly remind her of K-2L, especially if Space Pirates are involved.

    Arne Eriksen Skjoldr (Sylux)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ddm8ixm_913c82a1_0556_46ca_9766_1569626cfd42.png
At age twelve

The only son of Gyda and Erik Skjoldr, the last son of Cylosis, knight of the Alimbic Tetrarch Order and a destined hero of the Universe. Arne Skjoldr is every bit Samus' equal, but the more cold and callous way that the Alimbics raised him compared to Samus has left him with a more reserved, shy attitude. He is destined however, to one day become Sylux.

  • Ace Pilot: Noted to love flying and to be extremely good at it, mastering training programs in a hurry. He's yet to show off his skills, but he's managed to impress Alimbics who are multiple thousands of times older than he is.
  • Apologizes a Lot: Very quick to ask for forgiveness even when he's done nothing wrong as a result of Zurvduat's unpleasant parental tactics.
  • Badass Bookworm: Incredibly smart and well-read and one of Samus' only true rivals in terms of combat ability to be born of human origins.
  • Even the Guys Want Him: Arne is viewed as highly attractive and he has just as many admirers of his gender as he does those of his opposite.
  • Family Honor: Absolutely will not stand any attempts to demean the Skjoldr family or its legacy.
  • Nice Jewish Boy: As seen in the spinoff Duodecimarch Revolution, Arne is by Talmudic Law ethnically Jewish and is one of the sweetest characters in the story.
  • No Social Skills: Borderline hopeless when trying to deal with more normal children his age.
  • Official Couple: Completely tied the knot with Samus early into the second Arc; Forlorn. More than a year later and they still clearly love each other dearly.
  • Powered Armor: Arne's Alimbic Squire Armour is the complete equal of Samus' Chozo Explorer Suit and has essentially the same overall capabilities.
  • Proud Warrior Race Guy: More of a proud warrior culture guy, though from what has been revealed, the Uskarlings are a bit more complicated than simply a warrior culture; rather being more of culture that shares all burdens, including warfare.
  • Religious Bruiser: A follower of the religion of the Uskarling Culture.
  • Socially Awkward Hero: Has had extremely limited interactions with people in his peer group who weren't Progenitor children, robots he made himself, or other inheritors and comes off as very out of his depth when he has to make friends at the Magnus Academy.
  • Shock and Awe: Prefers electrical or electrically themed weapons, and in the spin-off Duodecimarch Revolution shows an affinity for electrical magic and abilities.
  • Smart People Build Robots: Has built thousands of robots as a way to pass the time, keep his nerves steady, and demonstrate his mastery of engineering to his caretakers.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: His and Samus' relation is doomed to end in fission. Though by Word of God they never really lose their feelings for each other even after Arne takes on the identity of Sylux and stages his disappearance. It's this lingering love for Samus that greatly complicates his efforts to directly fight her, and eventually is meant to be a bridge to their reconciliation.
  • Teen Genius: Every bit Samus' equal in terms of intellect, and the two clearly bond with each other over their shared love of building, designing, and understanding things.
  • Woobie: Not only is he an orphan but a child abuse victim due to the cruelty of the Alimbic General Zurvduat and the apathy of most of the Alimbics to his well being and happiness. It's hard to not want to give him a hug.

Enemies

    Ridley

A monster that lurks in the nightmares of countless beings in endless galaxies, a psychopathic murderer and archvillain who can't feel the smallest ounce of remorse for any of his actions for a solitary predator has no need of such things. Though where the Space Dragon comes from is unknown, his reputation even among the enforcers of High Command is one etched in blood and terror.

  • Adaptational Personality Change: While as sadistic and monstrous as ever, Ridley in the series actually detested eating people. Not for any moral reasons, mind you, but because he finds that it tastes disgusting and the act of doing so is humiliating in his eyes. Here, he absolutely revels in committing acts of cannibalism.
  • Bad Boss: Lazy, rude, contemptuous of those beneath him, incapable of more than academically appreciating social structures and unwilling to do the "boring" work, Ridley is clearly only given authority as an enforcer because of his personal power rather than any actual leadership qualities.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: While he has thoroughly studied all matters of tactics, logistics, politics, strategy and operations, he finds these things immensely boring and mostly just wants to get his next violent thrill; passing off most of the drudge work to his military attaches Weavel and Zenkin.
  • The Dragon: One of the Enforcers of Space Pirate High Command, standing outside of the standard military hierarchy and representing the interests of the leading Council of the space pirates.
  • Dragons Are Demonic: Compared to Demons as much as he is to Dragons.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Introduced having come fresh off of partaking in the slaughter of hundreds of billions of innocent people and mostly wishing he could have killed more people.
  • Horrifying the Horror: Ridley is afraid of nothing, nothing save for High Command itself which has some unknown sort of power over him to the point that the possibility of rebuke by the Despot of Urtraghus; the first among equals of High Command; is enough to cow him into submission.
  • I Am a Humanitarian: As a hyper-carnivorous apex predator, the act of eating freshly killed prey gives Ridley a profound sense of satisfaction and joy.
  • It Amused Me: Ridley's sheer cruelty is born out of a highly developed predatory drive where terrorizing prey is a rewarding experience reinforced so that he can be a successful hunter. As such his motivations amount to little more than hitting the next dopamine high from indulging in that terror.
  • Kick the Dog: Makes a puppet show with the corpse of a child's father while twisting his claws into their flesh to see how the pitch of their screams change purely to see how much horror a young person can take before snapping.
  • Red Baron: Collecting appellations from the Discord, Saga, and Duodecimarch, Ridley's sobriquets include the Cunning God of Death, the Demon King of Slaughter, the Drake of Destruction, the Crown Prince of Terror, and the Sky-Butcher.
  • The Sociopath: Due to being a member of a solitary predatory species, he has no capability or capacity for social bonds and can only academically understand how things like friendship work. To him, being touched is a prelude to violence, and he only cares to understand how reputation works in that if people think he's scary, life is easier for him.

    Viper

Technically five beings, Taipan, Adder, Mamba, Rinkhal, and the most dominant central head; Cobra. Viper is a void hydra of mysterious origins with a profoundly domination centered worldview and truly nightmarish abilities that befit their status as the greatest ace in the hole for the Federation RAID's Dead Hand Six team. Each of their heads has its own personality and gender, but all are united in a sense of ruthless dedication to the RAID's cause.

  • Animalistic Abomination: Viper's biology is strange even by the setting's standards, their origins are a complete mystery, and their capacity for malice is rivalled by few. Being some bizarre sort of Bat-Snake-Deer hybrid visually, the visual aesthetic of the brutal laws of nature reinforce an image of primordial tyranny.
  • Bizarre Alien Biology: Even by Metroid's low standards, a creature with five heads with separate personalities, two of which are at the tip of tails is strange. Nevermind their ability to produce anti-energy to create blasts of cold and sheets of ice or their reportedly obscene regenerative powers and seeming lack of need to respirate given that they can fly and function just fine in the void of space.
  • The Dragon: One of the most important figures in the RAID and while not one of the directors of the mysterious organisation, seems to serve as its overall face in the story.
  • Evil Virtues: In stark contrast to Ridley, Viper is a diligent worker who personally provides their attention to the management of operations they have authority over and has a deep attention to detail.
  • The Heavy: Though they are subordinate to the Directors of the RAID, it is clear that they are the front and center driving force of their presence in the story.
  • Multiple Head Case: Each of Viper's five heads has its own personality, name and gender identity. Viper is a collective name, though the Agendered Cobra is the predominant head.
  • Red Baron: As per valiant his list of titles includes charming descriptors such as The Devil of the Dead Hand, the Five-Headed Emperor of Cocytus, The Hellish King of Winter, the quintuple Tyrant, the Golden Hydra, and the cold dawn.

The Moon Hunter and Sun Stalker

The primary antagonists of the second book; Forlorn, while these creatures are of few words, they are beings of overwhelming power. Scouts in service to "the Old Foe" that had prompted the Chozo and Alimbics among others to develop devastating weapons of war and eventually seal their civilisation away in a pocket reality closed off from the rest of the multiverse as they came into conflict over their desire to wage wars of conquest in honour of their dread gods. How these two managed to escape into this reality is unknown, but they provide for the first ever enemy that Samus or Arne ever have to run from.

  • Marathon Boss: This in text form as the final fight sequence with them is by far the longest continual action sequence in the entirety of the series so far.
  • Scary Dogmatic Aliens: Gorea of Alimbic Tetrarch Order devouring fame has been outright declared to be of the same order of being as their deities if not one of them outright.
  • Starfish Alien: Little is known about their biology but what is known is that they are deeply strange and hostile.
  • The Juggernaut: Absurdly unstoppable to the point that their presence immediately derrails the entirety of the trial on planet Zoranth. Only temporarily making an entire brigade of marines on par with early game Samus in terms of combat ability and fully mobilising the planet's defences is able to force them to retreat.
  • The Voiceless: They never once communicate in any comprehensible form and their emotional states are never more than vaguely alluded to.
  • Villain Duumvirate: Crossed with The Dividual as they are essentially always together at all times and their whole fighting style is built closely around working together.

Family

    Old Bird

Actually named Re-Sekh, Old Bird is one of the oldest of the Ka-Sahmat Chozo on Zebes and is widely respected across virtually all of the progenitors as well as across many countries. Ancient when humanity's ancestors had yet to master fire, Re-Sekh is also well regarded for his legendary kindness, benevolence and patience.

  • All-Loving Hero: Genuinely does not have a mean bone in his body and impresses on Samus the importance of finding and making friends even if they seem different or strange to her.
  • Ambiguous Situation: He often hangs around August Wings, a very old female Chozo, but whether they are simply close friends or are romantically involved is not stated.
  • Cool Old Guy: Extremely old, but one of the nicest characters in the entire story and with plenty of genuine wisdom to offer to those willing to listen.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Grey Voice, though with the explicit age gap between them, with Grey Voice not being considered old enough to be counted as one of the elders of the Ka-Sahmat this is downplayed compared to the manga.
  • Retired Badass: Was a war-hero in the Forbidden Wars with the Old Foe, but the things he saw in that conflict pushed him towards his current pacifism.
  • Time Abyss: Is older than the entire Homo genus and not by a small margin. Has made allusions to having seen the real dinosaurs in their natural habitats in "variably canon" google doc slice of life roleplays with Valiant.

    Elmorni

Chief of science operations on the Caesarian Lance and the de facto civilian leader for the remaining Alimbics, Elmorni is old even by Progenitor standards but carries herself with matronly grace and gentle compassion. The more positive of Arne's parental figures, her insistence played a large part in directing Arne into the care of the Alimbics, and it is in large part because of her efforts that his circumstances haven't completely broke him.

  • Horrible Judge of Character: Takes nearly a decade to wise up to Zurvduat's abuse of Arne and while disapproving of his authoritarianism, seems to think he's a much better person than he really is until the truth is revealed.
  • Mama Bear: Is not afraid to stand up to Zurvduat, a Knight-General, a successful military leader and master of personal combat, and someone who is also quite familiar with her and technically has rank over her, when Arne's safety and well being is at stake.

    Zurvduat

Military commander of the Caesarian Fleet, Knight-General of the Tetrarch Order, and one of Arne's father figures. Zurvduat has a long history of military glory that he takes immense pride in, and is immensely troubled by awakening after tens of thousands of years of hibernation to find that his nation and people are mostly gone. But he is hardly a nice man, and his outright abusive relationship with Arne has done much to hurt an already hurting child.

  • Abusive Parents: A horrific child abuser who plays around with Arne's emotions without an ounce of remorse and leaves just enough hope that Arne might one day win his unambiguous approval to not make him give up on it.
  • Control Freak: Cannot stand the idea of Arne stepping out of the boundaries he has set for him and seems to have similar attitudes towards his subordinates.
  • Moral Myopia: Ruthlessly abusing a child under his care? Absolutely fine. Grinding countless civilisations under the wheel of imperialism? To be praised. Destroying someone's self-esteem with a stream of verbal abuse? Nothing wrong with that. Rebuking him for doing any of this or making him face any loss or setbacks? Absolutely unforgivable.
  • No Sympathy: A raging asshole who never seems to care for other people's pain or any possible reasons behind their failures, expecting nothing but perfection.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Outright confirmed to have physically abused Arne, often relentlessly.

Friends

    Ian Ivaschenko Malkovich

Part of the Malkovich family and younger brother to Adam as well as twin brother to Lydia Malkovich. An irreverent goofball obsessed with his idea of coolness and stylishness, Ian has a lot of potential as a powerful psion but seems to care more about his social status and getting dates than actually fitting into a military career. Despite that, he is a good kid at heart and looks out for his friends as best he can.

  • Brilliant, but Lazy: His chief conflict with his older brother is that he doesn't really care to apply himself all that hard despite all of his potential.
  • Chuunibyou: Engages in a profoundly silly attempt to ape a very much dead "cool kid" culture influenced by, as per Valiant, of all things coming across Dave Strider in Homestuck while looking through a report on the history of human internet use. His attempts at coming off as amazing, suave, and badass mostly serve as a sort of comic relief.
  • Cool Shades: Tries to invoke this but most people find it extremely silly.
  • Psychic Powers: A very powerful psion which feeds into Adam's disappointments regarding his lack of effort.
  • Sunglasses at Night: Doesn't take off his sunglasses even while wearing pyjamas.
