Brooke Rodgers

Portrayed By: Jessica Moyes (TV), Krystina Alabado (Musical OCR)

The main protagonist of the story. She and Zeke are cast as Esmeralda and the Phantom at their school play, but a series of mishaps threaten to ruin their parts.

  • Adaptation Dye-Job: She mentions at one point that she has chestnut brown hair like her brother. But in the TV episode, she has blonde hair.
  • Big Sister Instinct: Zig-zagged. She helps walk her younger brother to school in order to look out for him, yet she can't resist showing him horror movies from time to time.
  • Blind Without 'Em: Brooke wishes she didn't have her glasses, but needs them to see, or she'll just walk into walls.
  • Character Tic: When she gets annoyed, she rolls her eyes upward to only show the white. She says that other people find it really gross, but since Zeke sees her do it plenty of times, he isn't disgusted by it anymore.
  • Crazy-Prepared: She wears rubber bands on her arms at all times, just because she never knows when she'll need them.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: After all the trouble throughout the production of the play, she is able to do a fantastic performance as Esmeralda, and make the show a major success on opening night. Though, that doesn't stop her from getting a major surprise on finding out who really played the Phantom and died during original production in the 1920s from a yearbook.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Zeke likes to call her "Brookie", which she finds annoying at times. He also calls her "a babbling Brooke" because she tends to talk on and on.
  • Everyone Has Standards: She may like to show her brother horror movies, but she would never show him something truly terrifying such as Friday the 13th (1980).
  • Motor Mouth: The musical shows that she tends to ramble when she's nervous or flustered, as the song "Babbling Brooke" is ample evidence of.
  • Nice Girl: She says that she usually doesn't like to think of or say nasty things about people. And she is quick to show Brian around his new school.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: She is definitely this, enjoying horror movies and watching them with her brother.
  • Opinion Flip Flop: She tends to change her mind about a subject quickly. This drives Zeke insane.
  • Platonic Life-Partners: She and Zeke are this. Brooke notes how many of her female friends find it weird that she is best friends with a boy, but she doesn't care. She doesn't find him cute, and she usually doesn't like hanging out with other girls.
  • Stage Fright: She admits that she used to have this problem, but she's largely gotten over that now to become the lead of the play.
  • Thrill Seeker: She is very excited to do things such as catch the mysterious stranger that is framing Zeke as the Phantom.
  • Unknown Rival: Tina constantly antagonizes her and tries to upstage her at any opportunity. Brooke is very confused on why she does this, as she doesn't recall her ever doing anything bad to Tina.

Zeke Matthews

Portrayed By: Shawn Potter (TV), Will Roland (Musical OCR)

The best friend to Brooke. He is framed as the Phantom that keeps messing up production of the play.

  • Adaptation Dye-Job: He has blond hair in the book, but not in the TV episode, where he has light brown hair.
  • Age Lift: In Goosebumps: HorrorTown, he is shown to be in college, and even is starting to grow a soul patch!
  • Bad Liar: Brooke can easily tell when he's lying to her.
  • Clear My Name: He is very frustrated that people keep thinking he is the one who is messing up the play. And when this finally leads to him being grounded, he has had enough, and he teams up with Brooke and Brian to sneak into school and catch the real culprit. They eventually succeed.
  • Gag Haircut: He has his hair shaved near bald around the sides and back, but really long in the front.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: Even more so than Brooke. When he is grounded, Brooke claims that he can't survive without his horror movies to watch.
  • Not Me This Time: He claims that the mishaps occurring during The Phantom production are not his doing at all, with almost nobody believing him. It isn't until near the end that he is finally believed.
  • Race Lift: He is African-American in Goosebumps: HorrorTown.
  • The Scapegoat: The Phantom doppelgänger makes sure to frame Zeke at every turn, including putting a can of paint in his locker that lead from graffiti in the auditorium.
  • Toxic Friend Influence: He convinces Brooke to go on some very risky activities, such as traveling down to the forbidden school basement and even breaking into school outside of class.
  • You Are Grounded!: His parents, who truly believe that he is the one causing havoc at school, punish him by grounding him. They forbid him to leave home except for school, and they take away his VCR, much to his depression, as this means he can't watch horror movies.
  • You Have to Believe Me!: His way of explaining that he's not the troublemaker.
  • Youthful Freckles: Has these to combine with his juvenile activity. Only in the book, though.

The Phantom of the Auditorium

Spoiler
As Brian Colson

Portrayed By: Stuart Stone (TV), Noah Galvin (Musical OCR)

A ghost haunting Brooke and Zeke's middle school when their class decides to revive a cancelled play from 70 years ago, appropriately called The Phantom. It is believed he is the boy who was originally going to play the Phantom but disappeared. He is, and he's also Brian, the boy who transferred into Brooke's class.

  • Anti-Villain: One of the more benign creatures in the series, he just wants to be in a play so he can rest in peace.
  • Cool Mask: The cover art for the book depicts it as just a plain white mask, but the book describes the Phantom's mask as actually being blue-green. The UK cover artwork is a closer example of what the mask is described as.
  • Death of a Child: He was part of the class that tried to perform The Phantom back in the 1920s, but he mysteriously disappeared the night before the play went on. It turns out he fell through the trap door beneath the stage and died.
  • Expy: Of The Phantom of the Opera.
  • Ghostly Goals: He wants to finally put on the performance he was denied when the original play got cancelled.
  • Large Ham: When he finally gets to go on stage.
  • Motor Mouth: The musical has him share this trait with Brooke. Again, "Babbling Brooke" provides ample evidence of that.
  • Never Found the Body: No one ever found the boy's body after he disappeared.
  • Non-Malicious Monster: The worst thing he does is incapacitate Zeke so he can perform in the play.
  • Promoted to Love Interest: In the musical adaptation mentioned on the main page, Brian and Brooke clearly have a thing for each other and Brooke has a whole song about how she has a hard time talking to him. At the end, he properly says goodbye to her before vanishing after the reveal that he's the Phantom.
  • Real After All: At first it's believed the Phantom is telling everyone to stay away from the auditorium. It turns out the person everyone thought was the Phantom was really Emile, the supposed night janitor. Who then turned out to be a homeless man living under the stage. It's not until opening night that the real Phantom shows up.
  • Walking Spoiler: Talking too much about Brian would reveal that Brian is the Phantom and not Emile.

Emile

Portrayed By: Eric Fink (TV), Alex Brightman (Musical OCR)

A person claiming to be the night janitor at Brooke's school. He is really a homeless person living beneath the school and pretending to be the Phantom to drive people away from his home.

  • Adaptational Attractiveness: In the book, he's described as a tiny man with unkempt hair, angry eyes, a scowling face, and a large scar down his cheek. In the episode, he has more neat curly hair, more natural kind eyes, a handsome face, and no scar at all.
  • Crazy Homeless People: He lived underneath the trapdoor, and did various schemes to make sure his "home" wasn't invaded. He claimed to be the night janitor when Brooke and Zeke first come across him, he made various schemes to scare people while dressed as the Phantom, he framed an unfortunate boy, and when confronted he tried to attack the children whom found his hideaway.
  • Evil Sounds Raspy: He has a raspy, hoarse voice like sandpaper, and he uses that as an advantage to make himself even more frightening as the Phantom whom he is pretending to be.
  • Freudian Excuse: When questioned by the children whom come across his hideout, he tells how his father worked at the school for thirty years, and he brought Emile as a kid to the basement. And when he lost his apartment in town, he considered the school theatre underground to be the next best living place, so he hung out there for months and pretended to be the Phantom to shoo away anyone who disturbed his home.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: He has a deep purple scar down the side of his face to indicate that he is a person who is up to no good.
  • Icy Blue Eyes: Brooke notes how he looks very creepy with his pale gray eyes.
  • Miniature Senior Citizens: He is pretty old, and he's the same size as the main characters, whom are preteens. This makes him perfect to frame a student at school as the culprit.
  • Walking Spoiler: Talking too much about him reveals just how much of a Red Herring he is.
  • Wild Hair: Has thick white hair that fell wild and unbrushed over his forehead like a mop. His hair in the episode is still a little wild, although more neat and it's brown.
  • Younger Than They Look: What he turns out to be. He has white hair and a very scowly, lined face, just the right age to look like the Phantom if he was still alive (in his 70's). However, when asked about this, he is genuinely confused, and replies that he's only fifty-seven.
