- Bare Midriffs Are Feminine: Unsurprisingly for a toy line based mermaids, the main four protagonists are all girly characters who wear clothing that exposes their stomachs.
- Curtains Match the Window: Almost every single character's eyes match their hair.
- Long Hair Is Feminine: Every female character has long hair that reaches at least waist lengthnote and are all pretty feminine (except maybe Dev). In the stock art, the mermaids’ hair reaches series, it stretches down to their ankles.
- Morphic Resonance: In human form the Merfriends keep their tops, but gain skirts and shoes which carry some bit of holdovers from their tails.
- Punny Name: Most characters in the show have an ocean-based pun for a name.
- Secret Identity: The Merfriends have to keep their mermaid halves a secret from all humans or they can't go back to the surface anymore.

- Phoneaholic Teenager: As she says herself in Episode 3, she "can't live without her shellphone".
- Power Glows: She has a mesmerizing glow as stated in her profile.
- The Fashionista: She loves "kriller" fashion as stated in her intro-vid.
- Unexplained Accent: Searra has an unexplained Spanish accent despite likely being from the same place as the rest of her friends.

- The Leader: She's the one who seems to be in charge out of the four.
- Super-Speed: Her profile says she can swim or run very fast.

- Glass-Shattering Sound: Her singing can break glass as seen in Episode 7.

The sweet but shy member of the group, who likes boho styles.- Granola Girl: Heavily downplayed, but her bohemian-inspired fashion, love of yoga, veganism and phrase "save the sushi" seem to point her in this direction.
- Informed Ability: According to her student ID, Finly has the ability to communicate with animals.
- Light-Haired Swimmer: Finly is blonde and loves to swim. Fitting, since she’s a mermaid.
- Speaks Fluent Animal: She can speak any animal language, land or sea, as her profile says.

- Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Cora has blonde waves of hair and is a "sweet little happy clam" with a good heart.
- Mrs. Exposition: Her appearance in Episode 2 consists of her informing the Merfriends and viewers of several key characters at school.
- Secret Chaser: Initially this upon discovering the girls' secret.
- Secret-Keeper: The only student of Mermaid High who knows the girls are mermaids.

Mermaid High's surf star and most popular student who loves to be in the spotlight.- Alpha Bitch: Catalina is stated to be a "stingray with a side of jelly" who loves being queen in Deep Dive Episode 2, heavily implying she is this. In episodes, she's shown to be egocentric, demanding and dismissive, throwing water on Searra during the Winter Dance Concert because Searra had repeatedly taken her spotlight.
- Attention Whore: Catalina demands that she be paid attention to while surfing in Episode 4 and becomes angry when Cora doesn’t comply.note
- Acquired Situational Narcissism: Deep Dive Episode 4 implies that once she became surf star, her ego increased exponentially.
- Even Evil Has Standards: She's not "evil" per say, but in the background of Episode 5, she expresses clear surprise and shock at Dev's hostility and actions.
- Hartman Hips: A shot of her in her wetsuit shows her hips are much wider than her chest.
- Light-Haired Swimmer: Catalina is stated to be a surf star in Episode 2.
- Secret Chaser: To the Merfriends along with Devin.

- Bitch Alert: In her first physical appearance, Devin shoves her way between the main characters and orders them to stay away from Xavier.
- Cruel Cheerleader: She's the Pierleader captain and is a royal jerk towards everyone.
- In-Series Nickname: Dev.
- Only Known by Their Nickname: She goes by "Dev".
- Tsundere: Implied. Cora states she's your "BFF one minute; frenemy the next", meaning she might be some form of one.
- Clingy Jealous Girl: Ex-girlfriend example, but when she says to not go near X, she means it as evidenced by her trying to throw water onto Finly for pairing up with him for a class.

- The Smart Guy: Deep Dive Episode 5 states that he's top of his class and a "smartthrob".
- Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Deep Dive Episode 5 reveals that he's afraid of ferris wheels

Catalina's ex and the subject of both Oceanna's and Searra's crushes.- Academic Athlete: Deep Dive Episode 2 states that he "has many, many thoughts" and loves deep conversations.

- Nobody Touches the Hair: He doesn't let anyone touch his hair according to Deep Dive Episode 2.

- Dissonant Laughter: Likes to laugh maniacally for no reason as seen in episodes 3 and 5. She sounds like a maniac usually, and her laughter emphasizes her craziness.
- The Faceless: In Episode 3. Averted by episode 5 where her face is shown at the very beginning.
- Punny Name: Sue Nami sounds a lot like "Tsunami".
