  • Badass Cape: Wore black cape after becoming a vampire.

  • Colonel Badass: As a Colonel and the leader of the Code Zero unit, he definitely is this.
  • Decoy Protagonist: He is the protagonist since the first episode. However in the second half after the earthquake where he got injured and turned into a vampire, Maeda's role is reduced, shifting the protagonist role to Kurusu. Though in the manga, he wasn't the protagonist to begin with since it follows more on Kurusu's and Aoi's storyline.
  • I Owe You My Life: He swears loyalty to Lt. Gen. Nakajima who saved him after being left alone in the middle of the battlefield during the Japanese army's intervention in Siberia. However, his loyalty is tested when he learns that Nakajima is using the ASCRA to turn soldiers into vampires and what he did to his daughter. Defrott even challenges him for not trying to fulfill Misaki's promise to stop her dad.

Shutaro Kurusu

Voiced by: Tasuku Hatanaka (Anime, Japanese) Zach Aguilar (Anime, English)

  • Badass Cape: Sometimes wears a black cape as part of his uniform.
  • The Dreaded: As an A-Class vampire, lower ranked vampires are instinctively afraid of him.
  • Nice Guy: He's very friendly to his teammates and to other people despite being a vampire. In episode 8, he's willing to help others in need despite some of them have suspicions of him as a vampire.
  • Supporting Protagonist: While Maeda is the protagonist first introduced in the pilot episode, Kurusu only shows up in the second episode. However, after the earthquake in the second half, he eventually becomes the central main character after Maeda's role is reduced when he turned into a vampire.
  • Technical Pacifist: Despite his status as a Code Zero member who is assigned to kill vampires, he still acts as a regular soldier who refuses to attack civilians regardless if they've turned into vampires. He even refuses to use much of his strength during missions. Maeda warns him that this could get him and his comrades killed and Kurusu is aware of it because he's afraid he might lose his sanity if he uses too much of his abilities.

Tokuichi Yamagami

Live actor: Jurota Kosugi (2013 stage reading), Junichi Suwabe (2015 stage reading)

  • A Father to His Men: Despite being outranked by his fellow peers, he still cared for them particularly for Kurusu and Maeda.
  • Butt-Monkey: Was frequently the butt of jokes.
    • Yamagami was the only unranked-class vampire in Code Zero, which is often noted.
    • In Episode 2, Takeuchi shot him to demonstrate the vampires' Nigh-Invulnerability. Later, he talked big about beating their commander into shape, before it's revealed to be his old classmate Maeda, who now outranked him. Maeda commented that Kurusu (a Lance Corporal) also outranked him in vampire rankings.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: The most irritable member of Code Zero.
  • Happily Married: To Tomiko when he was human.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: In Episode 6, Yamagami removed the debris burying Maeda at the cost of his life, as he had to step into the sunlight while doing so.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: He hated his new life as a vampire not only because he lost his chance to return to a normal human life after serving in the military but also never got to be reunited with his wife.

    Suwa

Suwa

Live actor: Kenichi Suzumura (2013 stage and 2015 stage reading)

Voiced by: Kenichi Suzumura (Anime, Japanese), Aaron Dismuke (Anime, English)

  • Cool Mask: He's usually wearing one of these.
  • Expy: Appearance-wise, he looks similar to Shinya Hiragi from Seraph of the End.
  • Non-Uniform Uniform: His version of the Code Zero uniform has a shorter jacket, a hood, and longer sleeves.
  • Older Than They Look: Appears to be a young teenager, but is actually the oldest member of Code Zero, having been alive since the Edo period.
  • Would Hurt a Child: When Kurusu saw him killing a vampire child which confirmed the rumors of him slaying vampire children, Suwa admits that he has to kill them because their survival is nil as they'll never grow old and are unable to stay in one place.

    Takeuchi

Takeuchi

Live actor: Akira Ishida (2013 stage and 2015 stage reading)

Voiced by: Akira Ishida (Anime, Japanese), Chris Guerrero (Anime, English)

  • For Science!: Takeuchi is very enthusiastic about studying vampires. He doesn't even regret turning into one because his brain wouldn't age.
  • Labcoat of Science and Medicine: Takeuchi wears one instead of the usual black-and-red Code Zero uniform.
  • Power Dies Your Hair: His hair is a light pink colour, which stands out as most of the other characters have realistic hair colours. The flashback to how he was turned into a vampire shows him with dark hair as a human.

    Sonosuke Nakajima

Sonosuke Nakajima

Live actor: Hiroki Takahashi (2013 stage reading) Kenyū Horiuchi (2015 stage reading)

Voiced by: Hiroshi Yanaka (Anime, Japanese), Mick Wingert (Anime, English)

  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: His reason for creating vampire units within the Imperial Army was not only to show the country's prowess but also to prevent casualties after they have suffered an excruciating defeat in Siberia. Too bad the earthquake foiled his plans.

    Defrott

Defrott

Live actor: Miyuki Sawashiro (2013 and 2015 stage reading)

Voiced by: Miyuki Sawashiro (Anime, Japanese), Ciarán Strange (Anime, English)

  • Adaptational Heroism: Defrott is more heroic and noble in the anime due to the presence of Misaki, his former theater co-worker, who cheered him up and asked advice from him for her acting career. In the manga, Defrott is more sinister and manipulates Aoi for information.
  • Expy: Appearance-wise, he looks similar Mikaela Hyakuya from Seraph of the End.

    Aoi Shirase

Aoi Shirase

Live actor: Minami (2013 stage reading), Aki Asakura (2015 stage reading)

Voiced by: Fumiko Orikasa (Anime, Japanese), Caitlin Glass (Anime, English)

  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: In the manga, she's more emotional when she learned of Kurusu's "death". When she does catch a glimpse of him, she begs him to come back to her. In the anime, it was said that she tries not to cry when her older brother died and despite Kurusu being missing, she doesn't seem to angst about it, though she does miss him.
  • Damsel in Distress: Is captured in order to draw out Defrott.
  • Demoted to Extra: Her relationship with Kurusu and her mourning for his "death" is rarely focused on in the anime.
  • Genki Girl: She's always energetic and enjoys doing her job.
  • I Will Wait for You: She asks Kurusu to promise her to return alive. Even though she's been told that he's killed in action, she still believes that Kurusu is alive.
  • Identical Stranger: She looks very similar to Misaki, which causes Maeda to initially mistake her for the latter.
  • Intrepid Reporter: Aoi works on a magazine as a reporter who wants to write news-worthy articles. When she decided to write about the human combustion incidents, her boss rejects her pitch and wants her to write about the opening of the Imperial Hotel, much to her chagrin.
  • Joisey: Caitlin Glass gives her a strong New Jersey-like accent, probably to play up her status as an ordinary girl in the midst of all the supernatural goings-on.

    Misaki Nakajima

Misaki Nakajima

Voiced by: Ayahi Takagaki (Anime, Japanese), Dawn M. Bennett (Anime, English)

  • Ethereal White Dress: While a vampire, she wore her costume as Salome, which was a white dress with a translucent skirt and sleeves.
  • The General's Daughter: She's actually the daughter of Ltg. Sounosuke Nakajima but they're not really close.
  • Identical Stranger: She looked very similar to Aoi, and the latter is often mistaken for her.
  • The Ophelia: As a vampire, she was usually only able to recite and act out her lines as Salome from the titular play by Oscar Wilde. She also appears barefoot in her Salome outfit. However, she did have some moments of clarity.
  • Sailor Fuku: She wore one while a human.
  • She Knows Too Much: She accidentally eavesdropped on her father and Rufus Glenn talking about the Ascra which made her suspicious about the existence of vampires. She discussed this with Deffrot, confirming her suspicions. However, she was mortally wounded in the stage accident, causing Deffrot to give his blood to her and convert her into a vampire. Deffrot and later, Maeda suspected that the accident was somehow arranged.

    Shinnosuke Tenmaya

Shinnosuke Tenmaya

Voiced by: Sachi Kokuryu (Anime, Japanese), Katelyn Barr (Anime, English)

    Rufus Glenn

Rufus Glenn

Voiced by: Makoto Furukawa (Anime, Japanese), Reagan Murdock (Anime, English)

  • Big Bad Wannabe: He's poised as the Big Bad for the majority of the anime as he's the one who supplied Nakajima with the Ascra for his vampire unit project. Regardless of his cunning and manipulative nature, he's not really a powerful vampire like Defrott who eventually outsmarts towards the end.
  • Canon Foreigner: He's an original character for the anime. Most of his actions are transferred from Defrott.
  • Voice Changeling: He was able to mimic Maeda's voice as well the those of military brass that Nakajima usually met with.
