Height: 182cm
Zodiac Sign: Libra
Birthday: October 17th
Flower: Cornflower
Color: Dark blue
One of the love interests. While his identity and personality may vary across The Multiverse, Clarence tends to be a level-headed intellectual who hides strong emotions behind a facade of impassivity.
    General tropes
  • Alliterative Name: His name and surname starts with "C".
  • Blue Is Calm: His theme color is blue and he’s quite emotionally composed.
  • Friend to All Living Things: He has an almost supernatural ability to attract animals to him. In the Modern World, he has been seen getting along well with cats and birds. In Godheim, the Seasonal Hunt event reveals that he empties an entire lake of fish when he goes fishing, because fish jump out of the water and take his bait on their own.
  • Genius Sweet Tooth: Inverted. Clarence actually doesn’t like sweets because they make him sleepy, and he doesn’t react too well if given Black Forest Gateau or Lollipop as a gift. He will still accept candies when they’re from the MC though.
  • Rubik's Cube: International Genius Symbol: One of his gift is a rubik cube.
  • Stoic Spectacles: All versions of him across The Multiverse tend to wear spectacles, and aside from the traditional glasses, he has also been seen with monocle and goggles. It highlights personality traits they share: calmness and rationality.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: His glasses emphasize his studious and ingenious nature.

Clear-minded and calm student council president

"We had big dreams when we were young, even though it seemed impossible."
Age: 19
The current Student Council President of St. Shelter Academia and second-year in Law major. While he has the appearance of a book-smart honor student, Clarence is actually a kind, friendly, and reasonable senior with an unexpected interest in mecha and monsters.
  • Badass Bookworm: Besides his academic prowess, Clarence is also a skilled judoka who is on par with professional security guards and can fight four people at once.
  • Big Damn Hero: In his Godheim route, Clarence shows up to protect the MC from the students Heinrich employed as guards, and from there he contributes greatly to taking Heinrich down.
  • Jerkass to One: Clarence is normally patient and even-tempered in most situations, but he’s visibly annoyed when O’ Connor is in his presence and barely tolerates the latter’s antics.
  • Irony: In the first Halloween event, he dresses up as a dragon wizard and comments that he will have to train to make his role convincing. If only he knows his Godheim counterpart is literally The Archmage
  • Kindhearted Cat Lover: He raises a bunch of cats and is knowledgeable about taking care of them. The MC uses her cat to be the topic of their first messages, which go smoothly.
  • One-Letter Name: Or rather, nickname. O’ Connor tends to call him "C", which he doesn’t appreciate.
  • Proud to Be a Geek: He likes mecha, dragons and monsters in general, and isn’t exactly trying to hide his interests.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: In his Godheim route, he proves himself to be understanding and helpful towards the MC even when she’s spouting cryptic, unproven and downright outrageous things. It’s only because Clarence believes her and assists her unconditionally that the MC can break Heinrich’s scheme.
  • Sleep Deprivation: In Clarence’s "Break Time" Illustra story, he hasn’t slept for two days straight. In the first night, he prepared for his live translation for the conference, and in the next he spent his night at the hospital looking after a scholar who suddenly fell ill.
  • Student Council President: He’s the student council president for St. Shelter Academia, and while his isn’t an Absurdly Powerful Student Council, he does have certain authority in the school and commands the Student Council to assist Harp Island in time of crisis.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: Clarence is generally stoic and straight-laced, befitting a Student Council President, but he’s not as unfriendly as he appears. To those he’s close to, he’s a nice and helpful with some playful streaks.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: In his Affinity 6’s event, he rebukes William’s belief that he’s nicer to the MC than to others by saying that he treats everyone fairly and isn’t playing favorite. When the MC expresses doubt, he reaffirms that her smile won’t change anything, completely unprompted.
  • Workaholic

    Tropes exclusive to Godheim

The archmage with an icy heart

"Your future is so bright... I just wish... I could be there to see you shine..."
Age: Classified
Symbol: Maple leaf
The Archmage of Godheim, leader of the Magi Tower and the one closest to the role of the emperor’s chancellor. He’s determined to have the MC sacrificed for Godheim’s survival, and does not react well to her defiance. Powerful yet cold and quiet like the relentless blizzard, he harbors a secret that has never seen the light of day.
  • Accidental Hug: When the MC tries to avoid Asmoran’s reach, she accidentally bumps into Clarence and he instinctively puts his arms around her, turning it into an awkward embrace. His reaction afterwards allows the MC to see that he does have his Not So Stoic side after all.
  • And I Must Scream: In order to truly free Godheim from the Glacial Butterflies, he pulls all of them into his body, at the time a gigantic Glacial Butterfly himself, and then flies into the spatio-temporal gap - "the place where stars go to die". Once Clarence's consciousness fades, the Glacial Butterfly in his body would have gone berserk and collided into different worlds, so this is the safest course of action to prevent any other world from suffering the same fate as Godheim has been, but it also means he will forever be trapped in a void where there is no concept of time or space, nor beginning or end. Even in his own Godheim’s ending, where he is eventually rescued by the MC, he still had to stay in that state for several centuries.
He will remain "alive", if you can call it that, alone in his complete and utter desolation.
  • The Ageless: He adopted Alkaid and Ehlonna since they were little children, and looks the same as he did ten years ago. In fact, his hair length is the only thing that changed in his appearance after 100 years.
  • The Archmage: He’s the Archmage of Godheim and leader of the Magi Tower, and his prowess has been shown through multiple instances to prove that none of his titles are vain. Whenever he appears in opposition to her, the MC only has two options: surrender or flee via unconventional means, because her Illustra power stands no chance against him. Even after training through countless voyages, a draw is the most she can force out of him, though that is enough for her.
  • Authority Sounds Deep: Clarence is only second to the emperor in Godheim’s hierarchy and hundreds of years older than the latter, so it’s only fitting that he has the deepest voice among the five male leads.
  • Baritone of Strength: His voice is much deeper than that of Modern World’s Clarence, which is expectable since he’s a 100-year-old archmage compared to a 19-year-old college student.
  • Blue Means Cold: His theme color hints at his cold, callous personality and preference for ice magic.
  • The Chosen One: As Cael found out, Godheim’s Clarence is a special existence whose fate cannot be interfered because of his paradox relation to the MC. When Cael tried to assassinate him himself, the former immediately got pulled into a space-time gap because were anything to happen to Clarence that was outside of his intended fate, the world's timeline would be thrown into chaos and the future would cease to exist.
  • Custom Uniform: His outfit is the Magi Tower’s uniform, but with a fur-trimmed full cape instead of a simple side cape like other mages.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: He was born in a poor family and sold away as a kid, where he was forced to drink a potion that would either turn him into a mage or kill him in the most painful way imaginable. It only got worse from there; When he was working as a bounty hunter to hunt the Glacial Butterflies, one of his two companions mutated into a Glacial Butterfly and killed the other companion right in front of his eyes. Some time later, he also witnessed his entire family and hometown being devoured by a blizzard caused by the Glacial Butterflies, and all the hard feeling he had for them all turned into despair and existential crisis that almost turned him into a Death Seeker.
  • Defrosting Ice King: It took the MC several near-death experiences, but her courage, kindness, and determination to help people eventually soften down Clarence in his route.
  • Despair Event Horizon: After losing his home and family to the Glacial Butterflies right in front of his eyes, all of Clarence’s disarrayed emotions turned into despair, and he almost let himself be killed by the Glacial Butterflies until the MC encouraged him to live for the future.
  • Dissonant Serenity:
    • In Lars’ route, he thwarts an Assassination Attempt by literally throwing the would-be assailant out of the window to her death in one fell swoop once he identifies her motive, staying expressionless during the process. Then he reveals to the MC that was the fifth one he had to deal with in that single night.
    • He doesn’t show a slightest bit of emotion when someone who got his organs melted after failing to turn into a mage was begging for his help, as well as when giving the MC a tour to the Magi Tower’s dungeon where the mages who were about to turn into Glacial Butterflies complete their painful transformation and get killed immediately for damage control.
  • The Dreaded: The MC is genuinely fearful of Clarence after being attacked and imprisoned by him countless times during her travels, so she never thought about approaching him for a solution until she gained enough power. His fellow mages in the Magi Tower are equally cautious and terrified of him, isolating him even further.
  • Dream Weaver: The entire "Seasonal Hunt" event is just an alternate reality he weaves for the MC to show her how her experience in Godheim would transpire if it were devoid of all the tragedies and sufferings.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: When he was young, he had the same short hairstyle and helpful personality as Modern World’s Clarence. His long and dreary life not only makes his appearance look distinctly different from his counterpart, but also diverges him from his old self.
  • Face Death with Dignity: Clarence is so determined to make the Descendance Ritual work that he doesn’t look like someone who will have to die at the end of it at all. He stays calm and resolute in the face of death, and if anything, he’s actually seems more relaxed than he has ever been in the entire route.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: His final solution to save Godheim is to bring all the Glacial Butterflies with him into a space-time gap, dooming himself to a Fate Worse than Death.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: When Clarence can no longer uphold his facade of stoicism and pragmatism, he is actually very self-conscious of the bad deeds he has done in life. He desperately tries to tell Amelia that she should loathe him for using her as a pawn in his struggle against the Glacial Butterflies before sending her onto a Suicide Mission, and the MC comments that he is condemning himself for his own ruthlessness more than actually talking to Amelia. Amelia’s unconditional gratitude towards him and innocent reaction to his uncharacteristic outburst doesn’t do him any good either.
  • Hidden Heart of Gold:
    • For all of his harshness and lack of hesitation to attack Alkaid when the latter betrays him, he still has a degree of care for the kid he picked up ten years ago. He lists Alkaid and Ehlonna as the only two mages he trusts to stay in the palace, and before his death in Alkaid’s route, he asks the MC to take care of Alkaid in his place.
    • In Lars’ route, he exerts his magic to melt the snow around the attic’s window even though he doesn’t need to just to give Lars some comfort while he’s bedridden from his fever.
  • High-Class Glass: He wears a monocle that shows how prestigious he is as The Archmage.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: He’s willing to go extreme lengths to ensure that the MC will be used as a sacrifice for the Descendance Ritual, even if it means she can be driven insane. However, he still acknowledged that the fault doesn’t lie in her, and she simply has to die for The Needs of the Many.
  • Irony: In order to fulfill his promise with the mysterious savior in his past, he actively antagonizes and tries to sacrifice a young girl…who is that exact savior before the Temporal Paradox brings her to their first meeting.
  • An Ice Person: He’s commonly seen using ice magic, which is ironic considering his enemies are the Glacial Butterflies, yet logical at the same time since the Endless Winter likely amplifies the effectiveness of his spells.
  • Jade-Colored Glasses: Knowing the Awful Truth about the relation between the mages and the Glacial Butterflies seems to change him forever and he no longer has any hope for a peaceful resolve for Godheim. Instead, he employs morally dubious methods and hurts countless people just to finish the mission he set out to complete at all costs: to save the people of Godheim from the Glacial Butterflies.
  • Jerkass: He always starts off a route as needlessly hostile towards the MC and will take any chances to lock her up in a cage until the Daphnephoria. In his own route, he repeatedly tries to attack and incapacitate her for attempting to unravel the secret of the Magi Tower even though she expresses clearly that it’s all for Godheim’s survival, and it takes being directly threatened by both Lars and Ayn to get him to leave her be for the day. He will only soften down either when the MC proves her loyalty or before his death.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: While he is being an ass about it, sacrificing the MC - a stranger from another world who (seemingly) can’t fight back - instead of 100,000 people is indeed a better bargain.
  • Knight in Sour Armor: Clarence behaves like an unfeeling Jerkass, but everything he has done is to save the people of Godheim from an invincible force that will definitely destroy the world and cannot be slowed down no matter what method he uses.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: Unlike his Modern World counterpart, he has long hair.
  • The Mentor: After adopting them, he served as Alkaid and Ehlonna‘s teacher in magic.
  • The Needless: He doesn’t have any need for sleep or nourishment, and his bedroom in the Magi Tower is just for display.
  • Not So Stoic:
    • The Accidental Hug between him and the MC appears to fluster him, and he awkwardly tries to change the topic to prevent the MC from questioning his reaction further.
    • His last conversation with Amelia shatters the ice that encased his heart and reveals a broken man who has been shouldering enormous responsibility and sins for the survival of the world. He uncharacteristically admits his wrongdoings in hope that Amelia would hate him like he deserves to, and becomes melancholic when she expresses gratitude for him instead. Afterwards, he softens down and smiles for her, which surprises the MC.
  • Paradox Person: The MC, a person from another world whom he wouldn’t have met 100 years later, had a deep involvement in his life thanks to Time Paradox, and The Promise he had with her was what motivated him to stay alive and keep the Glacial Butterfly inside him in control for more than a century.
  • Parental Substitute: He’s not the best at it, seeing how he makes them go to dangerous missions that will worsen their condition and would let them die for the sake of Godheim’s survival, but he’s nonetheless the one who adopted Alkaid, Ehlonna and Amelia and raised them into powerful mages.
  • Perpetual Frowner: He almost never smiles, or even looks relaxed for that matter. In her last conversation with him, Amelia calls him out on this and wishes that he may one day find the thing that can make him happy, to which he replies with a gentle smile.
  • Personality Power: He specializes in ice magic, which fits how much of an ice king he is.
  • Power at a Price: He didn’t start off his mage existence as powerful as he is nowadays. He gained his prowess by sealing a giant Glacial Butterfly that was merged with the imperial family’s blood and hosting intense emotions into his body at the risk that should the day ever come when he succumbs to the thing like every other mages with their own Butterflies, it will be capable of destroying Godheim single-handedly.
  • Pragmatic Hero:
  • The Promise: More than 100 years ago, he promised the MC - who became something of a Guardian Angel to him during the Temporal Paradox - multiple times that he would live on and protect the future where she would be born so that they can meet each other again. This desire allows him to become The Ageless.
  • Really 700 Years Old: He’s currently around 100 years old, and was one of the first mages to be created in Godheim.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: While he’s The Unfettered most of the time regarding the Descendance Ritual, Clarence isn’t obsessed with using the MC that much and is willing to accept alternative energy source as long as it works. He’s also less harsh on her once she proves her stance against the Silver Knight in Lars’ route.
  • Sealed Inside a Person-Shaped Can: The empowered Glacial Butterfly born from his despair when learning the Awful Truth about the mages’ nature can destroy Godheim single-handedly if let lose, so he sealed it into his own body to both protect the world and draw power from it.
  • Seen It All: His Dissonant Serenity comes from the fact that he has gotten used to all the atrocities Godheim can offer, having been born and lived in the entirety of its darkest age.
  • Sour Outside, Sad Inside: He’s the most hostile of the male leads who antagonizes the MC in his own route, but his behaviors become more understandable once we learn about the chain of sufferings he has undergone for more than a century.
  • Sour Supporter: Even when the MC manages to convince him that they can work together for Godheim’s survival, he still remains quite abrasive towards her and has some tsundere moments until situation becomes dire, in which he puts his life on the line to give her a chance to accomplish their shared goal.
  • The Stoic: He’s so cold and logical that he can come off as downright cruel.
  • Then Let Me Be Evil: When sealing the giant Glacial Butterfly that would turn him into The Archmage into himself, Clarence admits to the MC that he knows he’s dooming myself to becoming "a hideous beast that strikes fear into the hearts of all", but as long as he can create a future in which Godheim survives, he would be fine with becoming both a figurative and literal monster.
Clarence: If being a monster is what it takes to save Godheim...
Clarence: Then a monster is what I'll become.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: In the past, Clarence resembled his Modern World counterpart in personality, but the awful life he led turned him into an abrasive pragmatist who would forgo conventional ethics for a greater cause. Lars, who used to admired the archmage in his childhood, lamented his drastic changes after Clarence released a death row inmate to make him a member of the Noventrate.
Lars: The once righteous and kind Archmage Clayden, now a heretic who fomented insurrection and aided me in usurping the throne, all because he coveted the blood of the emperor.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: The Clarence that appears in the Seasonal Hunt event is a tad kinder and more patient than his normal self. Considering this is Clarence’s Tragic Dream brought to life, it seems to be his attempt to amend with the MC for knowing him at his worst.
  • Trauma Conga Line
  • The Unfettered: He will finish the Descendance Ritual, no matter the method. If the MC runs away, he will simply use the 100,000 people she’s meant to replace, and if Lars is killed, he will make the usurper sacrifice themself in his place as Ayn would find out.
  • When He Smiles: He responds to Amelia’s kindness, innocence, and gratitude in their last conversation with a light, gentle smile to fulfill her wish of seeing him smile. The MC is so shocked that she has to reaffirm the situation to herself twice.
  • Would Hurt a Child: He’s willing to adopt children with potential and turn them into mages to fight the Glacial Butterflies, which has severe side effects on their physical and mental well-being. When they reach their limit and are at risk of Face–Monster Turn, he will have them disposed either directly or through Suicide Mission before they become a threat. That said, he doesn't have any hard feeling towards them and feels guilty about his actions despite telling himself that it is necessary.
