    Dan Yuseong

Dan Yuseong

The Protagonist. Originally a lowly captain in the reserve troops of the Just Faction in Murim. After dying in the final battle against the demon Ma Cheon, Dan Yuesong is reincarnated into his younger body. Only now he can see a mysterious floating window with words.

  • The Ace: Deconstructed. He admits that he has no talent except for sheer perseverance and complains about the swift growth of other prodigies. Yet, his daily spartan training is the reason he regularly outperforms his more talented peers. Jang Gihu and Soso Cheon admit that Dan is much stronger than them. Chorang Yong is obsessed with defeating him. Namgoong Geum quietly respects Dan after the latter defeated him in an all-out duel. The fifth and the seventh Murim Alliance Leaders appreciate Dan's ability and conviction and keep an eye on his growth.
  • All Your Powers Combined: Using the memories of his past life, Dan Yuseong steals the treasures that the five traitors were fated to obtain, thus, preventing them from becoming stronger. So far, he has collected four treasures: the shapeshifting weapons made from the Jade of Disorder, the Yin-Yang Breathing Technique, the Blaze Emperor's flame arts, and the Soul-Transferring Grand Art. He also obtained the martial arts manual of Kim Shin, learning the Ten-Weapons Demon Technique that enables one to wield several weapons simultaneously.
  • Badass Bookworm: Invoked by Dan who joined the eighth division in his quest for the Yin Yang Breathing Technique. After discovering that reading books can improve his stats, Dan becomes with reading as many books as he can on the 10th floor. Although he isn't as erudite as Gi Daemong, Dan is certainly more knowledgeable than he used to be. On Jin Hon's recommendation, he joins the elite first division after failing the exams for the eighth division. Although by then, Dan has already inherited the Yin Yang Breathing Technique from its creator, the Yin Yang Sage.
  • Beyond the Impossible: It is revealed by the Murim Alliance Leader Jaegal Chong that Dan's body is highly unsuitable for practicing martial arts, and it cannot store Qi properly due to the poor quality of his meridians. Even if he managed to live for 200-300 years, he can achieve the rank of only a Peak Master. Yet, Dan was able to defeat Chorang Yong, The Ace of Mount Hua, rank 1st in the Dragon and Phoenix Exam, and defeat the strongest person of the younger generation, Namgoong Geum of all people. All these feats impressed the Murim Alliance Leader so much that at one point, he considered taking Dan as his son-in-law!
  • Bow and Sword in Accord: Justified, despite the rules of the Murim looking down upon the usage of trigger-based weaponry in a fight. Dan eventually takes to holding a bow in one hand and a sword in the other, despite the bow needing both hands to be used and being useless without arrows in a close-range fight. The reason for this is that the system encourages Dan to become a Multi-Melee Master, granting him different stat boosts and abilities based on the weapons he's holding and how proficient with them he is. Bows increase his accuracy stat, which not only applies to projectile weapons but also his close-range attacks — Dan's sword swings undergo Bizarre and Improbable Ballistics in order to connect with their targets, meaning that a seemingly-missed sword swing's trajectory will improbably alter in order to hit his opponent, taking them off-guard and allowing him further apply his Confusion Fu fighting techniques.
  • Dual Wielding: Dan's preferred fighting style, even though the majority of the Murim University disproves of it. He usually uses a combination of a Sword and an Axe.
    • Exaggerated after he finds "The Record of the Ten Weapons Demon" where he learns the martial art Asura Weapon Technique, which allows him to wield up to ten weapons at once. Currently, he can use up to four without destroying his arms, and eight with the help of the Ying Yang Breathing Technique.
  • Elemental Powers: During the Pirate Trio's invasion of Zhejiang, Dan Yuseong obtains the inheritance of Cho Ryohe's ancestors, which grants him the ability to perform ice and fire based attacks.
  • Friendly Rivalry: Has one with Gihu Jang. The two have the most fun when they are fighting against each other, and are incredibly motivated to surpass the other. Dan even thinks of him as his battle buddy.
  • Groin Attack: Gives one to Chorang Tong during their first fight, which earns him the ire of the Blademaster.
  • Hammerspace: Successfully beating Chorang Yong, even on a technicality, unlocks access to the 'inventory' system for Dan, which takes the form of a Blank White Void for him. Items he stores within it apparently can exist without taking a physical toll upon him, allowing him to store a vast amount of weaponry and even carry away a large amount of valuable jade bigger than him when piled up, and he can even preserve food and alcohol in there, but Dan doesn't use it for combat purposes because doing so cuts off his sight and makes him lose track of his opponents. After Dan 'completes' his assigned mission to destroy the entirety of the Dark Serpent bandit clan (actually done on his behalf as a 'favor' by Gyeonghon Bukil, which the system still counts for him) Dan is granted access to a 'container bag' which allows him to store up to 5 different objects inside a similar hammerspace functionality. These objects can be bigger than the bag itself and can range from large rocks, his weapons, or Juju, and as it only activates his selections via small floating icons in front of him, Dan can use it mid-battle to access his resources.
  • Hard Work Hardly Works: This was true for Dan during his first life, as he bitterly laments to himself in his final moments, but the system seems designed almost specifically to avert this in his current one. The more effort he puts in, the stronger and more powerful he becomes, bit by bit, even by performing seemingly asinine tasks like 'performing a duck walk across the country'.
  • Karmic Jackpot: Dan had many regrets during his first life, such as not being able to join the Cheonbeong Academy or the Hidden Dragon Pavilion. As an ordinary soldier, he could only watch legends like Gihu Jang, Soso Cheon, Yong Chorang, or Namgoong Geum from afar. He especially resented Yong Chorang for stealing his wife and dumping her. In the current timeline, although Dan has to endure Training from Hell every day, he is handsomely rewarded for his efforts. He quickly becomes rich beyond imagination after selling precious stones to the mistress of the Thousand-Scents Brothel. He becomes regarded as a great martial master on par with Namgoong Geum and Yong Chorang (and that's after defeating both of them on seperate occasions). His leadership and exploits in thwarting the Japanese Pirate Trio's invasion of Zhejiang win him the unwavering trust of all his allies. Soso Cheon, the prettiest and most talented girl at the Murim University, falls for Dan Yuseong. He also becomes the sole practitioner of three of the four legendary and long-lost martial arts, whose records cannot be found in the central plains.
  • Mistaken for Badass: Dan's first encounter with Gyeonghon Bukli has the latter mistakenly assuming that Dan is really Chorang Yeong based on the fact that Dan used axes technique from the lawful faction of Murim to massacre the Dark Serpent clan, and he knows of no other prodigy in the area who could make him so excited for a fight.
  • Morph Weapon: After having the Jade of Disorder forged into a Sword and Axe, Dan is able to change the shape of his weapons after inserting his Qi into them.
  • Multi-Melee Master: Due to gaining different advantageous Status Buffs based on the number and type of weapons he wields in battle, the system encourages Dan to branch out into becoming this, despite the criticism of several teachers in the Murim University who feel that Dan will wind up wasting his potential and becoming a Master of None by not focusing on a single style and mastering it to its peak. However, Dan inherits a legendary martial art that enables him to wield several weapons at once and requires him to master every last weapon in the world. So far, Dan can use:
  • Red Baron: "Dragon of Xian/Storm Dragon of Seo-An" and "Library Valiant Protector"
  • The Rival: Is one to Jang Gihu, Chorang Yong, and Geum Namgung.
  • Secretly Wealthy: Dan digs his way out of Wushan mountain, mining heaps of precious corundum in the process. He stores all of them in his Hammerspace belt. Selling these stones earns him enough wealth to last more than fifteen lifetimes. Dan is so rich that he is able to secretly sponsor the Murim Alliance Leader when the council of elders refuse to fund the reconstruction of the Million Books Library (which was burnt down on their orders no less).
  • Ship Tease: With Soso Cheon. They're all but an Official Couple after Dan wins the Matchmaking Sparring against Namgoong Geum. He gifts her one of the pair of lovebird rings he acquired as a reward after winning the Matchmaking Sparring, subtly indicating that they are engaged. Soso teases Dan that she wants to become the World's Best Warrior so that Dan can become her househusband.
  • Stat-O-Vision: When Dan passes the entrance exam he originally failed, he is offered the choice of different rewards ranging from a Cool Sword to a special medicine that will boost his Gi permanently. However, thanks to Jang Jihu knocking him off-balance when selecting his reward, he accidentally selects the 'Third Eye' ability, which grants him this. It allows him to see people's true names, level of strength relative to him, and as he further levels it up, their strength, agility, and Gi capacity. Despite not directly aiding Dan's physical performance, it proves to be arguably the most useful ability once he's able to start leveling it up with repeated use. For instance, it allows him to identify the locations and numbers of a large gang of hidden bandits waiting to ambush him during a caravan protection job, even if he can't yet discern their precise stats and names, and forward his allies in time. Another time he meets with a bunch of high-level illusion-proficient Murim warriors, he can tell they're nearby even if he can't see anything about them by the '—' displays hanging in the fog.
  • The Strategist: While Ala Bongdae often criticises Dan Yuseong for his poor sense of strategy, he does admit that the latter is capable of coming up with better battlefield strategies. If Ala Bongdae and Gi Damyeong are prodigy strategists, Dan Yuseong is a seasoned veteran in that aspect.
  • Sudden Game Interface: Dan gains this when he first returns to the day of the entrance exam for the martial arts academy, though he has no context for what it specifically is, being only able to describe it as 'a floating floor panel with words written on it'. It becomes a minor Running Gag that every time Dan is challenged with a task that he thinks is impossible or insane, or that he sarcastically thinks up based on the conversation, the same announcement panel will appear offering him a sincere challenge to do said task and be rewarded for it, or suffer a penalty, to Dan's frustration.
  • Take a Third Option: Students of the Murim University are expected to support either the Nine Great Sects or the Five Great Clans. Dan instead chooses to support the Murim Alliance Leader, Jaegal Chong, and the two now work together to reform the Murim.
Dan Yuseong (to Jaegal Chong): Let's die together, then. For the sake of this rotten Murim.
  • World's Best Warrior: This was Dan's original goal after reincarnating, but after a talk with Bongnam Geum, he resolves himself to be a sturdy shoulder for the world to rest its worries on.
    Jang Gihu

Jang Gihu

In the previous timeline, Jang Gihu was the winner of the Dragon and Phoenix in Xian and the leader of the Mighty Association affiliated to the Murim Alliance. In the current timeline, he is the named disciple of the 7th Murim Alliance Leader, Jaegal Chong.
  • Best Friend: To Dan Yuseong and Soso Cheon.
  • The Big Guy: He is over 6'8" despite being a teenager and resembles a bear.
  • Blood Knight: One of his nicknames is Infinite Fighting Demon and enjoys fighting as many opponents as he can.
  • Determinator: He got his nickname, "Unyielding Steel Tower", when he fainted while standing after Namgoong Geum struck him with a heavy blow during the University Tournament.
  • Friendly Rivalry: Has this with Dan Yuesong.
  • Red Baron: "Infinite Fighting Demon" and "Unyielding Steel Tower".
  • Shield Bash: He wields two shields after training under Jaegal Chong.
  • Worthy Opponent: He enjoys competing against his best friend, Dan, and admits that the latter is much stronger than him.
    Soso Cheon

Soso Cheon

The daughter of Cheonbeong Academy's principal, Taegong Cheon.
  • The Ace: The most talented female disciple of Murim University. In her first year, she became the winner of the female division at the University Tournament, surpassing her seniors.
  • Broken Bird: In the previous timeline, Soso grew up to become the World's Most Beautiful Woman and was famous for her exceptional skill in martial arts. However, her father refused to acknowledge her and only cared about getting her married into one of the most prominent groups in the Murim. Due to a series of unfortunate events, Soso married Bukli Gyeonghon, the head of the Forces of Evil. Soso's growing resentment turned into malice and she became the most notorious villainess in the Murim. In the second timeline, one of Dan's goals is to prevent Soso's marriage at any cost.
  • Broken Tears: Starts sobbing uncontrollably after she loses the match-making spar to Namgoong Geum, meaning that she must marry him against her will. Worse, Namgoong Geum only viewed it as a means to lure out Dan Yuseong. Fortunately, Dan vanquishes Namgoong Geum in an all-out duel, breaking Soso's engagement.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Downplayed. Soso isn't too pleased when Dan Yuseong goes to an island, alone with a beautiful girl like Cho Ryohe. Of course, Dan remains faithful to Soso and only needed Cho Ryohe's help in locating the Blaze Emperor's Grand Flame Art.
  • Dude Magnet: She has her fan club, the Hundred Talents Flower Protection Group led by Mae Chung-un.
  • Fangirl: Of Dan Yuseong. She openly admits his superior strength and starts blushing when she watches him push back Namgoong Geum, noting that Dan Yuseong looks cool.
  • Ship Tease: With Dan Yuseong. He is forced to participate in the match-making spar for Soso and ends up winning after defeating the strongest contender, Namgoong Geum. Afterward, he goes out on a date with Soso who subtly expresses her feelings for him. Later, Soso wears one of the Lovebird rings she received from Dan, who wears the other ring. It is all but stated that they are betrothed to each other.
Soso (to Dan): Stop nitpicking and take care of yourself. Because I'll make you stay at home washing dishes and taking care of the kids later.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: In the current timeline, Soso becomes increasingly infatuated with Dan because of his bravery and kindness, and ends up falling in love with him.
  • To Be a Master: She chooses to become the disciple of Putou's Heavenly Nun, one of the best female martial artists of the generation. She declares her ambition to become the World's Best Warrior so that she can compete with her crush, Dan.
  • Tsundere: Downplayed. While she does admit to having feelings for Dan Yuseong, she tries hard not to let them affect her usual behaviour or ambition.
  • World's Most Beautiful Woman: Is the Head-Turning Beauty of Murim University. She is described as such by Gija Cheon.
