The Hoodrats:

The titular protagonists, a gang of super-powered delinquents who do their best to protect their hometown of Lush Green Lands from evildoers.
    Kermit The Kid
The fastest member of the Hoodrats.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Melody has a few of these for him, namely "Kerm", "Kermie" and "Kermster".
  • Eyes Out of Sight: His afro hair almost always obscures his eyes.
  • His Name Really Is "Barkeep": "The Kid" isn't some alias: it's Kermit's actual family name.
  • Official Couple: With Skid.
  • The One Guy: The sole male member of the Hoodrats, with Melody and Mystique being girls and Skid being non-binary.
  • Silent Protagonist / The Quiet One: Almost never speaks, which is part of why Oscurita enjoys fighting him more than the others. When he finally does speak, everyone else is caught off guard, because they thought he was incapable of speech.
  • The Stoic: He hardly emotes.
  • Super-Speed: His superpower.
  • Worthy Opponent: Oscurita considers him to be such, as he's the sole of member of the Hoodrats that she doesn't find annoying, and she finds every fight with him to be fun.

    Melody The Clown
The self-proclaimed commander of the Hoodrats, and thus the one usually coming up with the plans of attack.
  • All There in the Manual:
    • One of the creator's doodles reveals that her true name is Jane H. Rudman.
    • An edited drawing on the creator's Discord server reveals that Melody's pansexual.
  • Blue Is Heroic: Has blue hair and is colored primarily blue in-comic, and she's one of the heroes.
  • Flipping the Bird: Does this to Oscurita in "Villain!" with the smuggest grin on her face.
  • The Leader: Believes herself to be the leader of the gang. No one seems to to say otherwise, although Sammi does think Kermit is the leader instead of her.
  • Magical Clown: She's a clown with fire-related powers.
  • Playing with Fire: Her power, "Hot Pressure", gives her flame-like powers.
  • Reincarnation: As of now details haven't been given to avoid spoilers, but invokedWord of God states that she's the reincarnation of Loki.
  • We Used to Be Friends:
    • She and Prince used to date before breaking up and becoming enemies.
    • She and Marbles used to be pretty close before the latter became the Land Guardian.

    Skid The Rabbit
A dude who has the powers of a rabbit... and rocket boots.
  • All There in the Manual: An edited drawing on the creator's Discord server reveals that Skid, aside from being non-binary, is also bisexual.
  • Animal Motifs: Rabbits. Their full name is "Skid The Rabbit", they wear a rabbit mask, and can jump high. And behind that mask, they're an actual rabbit.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Oscurita describes them as the snarkiest of the Hoodrats.
  • His Name Really Is "Barkeep": Just like how Kermit's actual family name is "The Kid", so Skid's is "The Rabbit".
  • In a Single Bound: Can jump high, and wear rocket-shoes that amplify this power.
  • Non-Human Non-Binary: They are a non-binary anthropomorphic rabbit.
  • Official Couple: With Kermit.
  • Token Minority: They are the only non-binary member of the Hoodrats.

    Mystique The Human
The strongest member of the Hoodrats.
  • His Name Really Is "Barkeep": Seeing that Kermit's actual family name is "The Kid" and Skid's is "The Rabbit", it's possible that "The Human" is Mystique's actual family name and not just some alias.
    • This seems further supported by Sky calling her "Ms. Human" and invokedWord of God stating that the characters of the webcomic belong to a species called "Wegians".
  • Little Bit Beastly: Is shown with animal ears sticking out of her hair in "VS LabRats (Part 2)".
  • Scary Teeth: "VS LabRats (Part 2)" reveals that underneath her bandanna is a mouth fall of sharp teeth.
  • Super-Strength: Her power is "Divine Strength" and is flat-out stated to be the team's strongest member.

Oscurita's Forces:

    Oscurita (spoilers unmarked)
The Arch-Enemy of the Hoodrats and the main antagonist of the webcomic. Oscurita seeks to Take Over the World (for fun), but the Hoodrats always foil her plans.

To read about her true identity, see Cindy Brentworth's entry.

    Prince
Oscurita's right-hand man.
  • All There in the Manual: One of the creator's doodles reveals that Prince is transgender.
    • This was later confirmed by the comic itself in "The Liars Club", with it also revealing that Prince used to be called "Princess".
  • Blood Knight: Likes fighting "for fun".
  • Casual Danger Dialogue: In "Heist!", the Hoodrats have destroyed Oscurita's ship, leading to her, along with Prince, falling out of the sky. What does he have to say in response to their current situation?
    "Can we get burgers?"
  • The Dragon: To Oscurita, but he also assists Skyblack in her plans from time to time.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: He's horrified by Skyblack eating a Little.
  • Evil Counterpart: Can be considered this to Kermit since both have Super-Speed, but while Kermit is on the heroes' side, Prince's on the villains'.
  • Healing Factor: Has this, but that doesn't mean he doesn't feel pain.
  • Laughably Evil: Prince might be a villain, but he's also arguably the funniest character in the entire comic.
  • The Rival: Proclaims himself to be this to Kermit.
  • Stupid Evil: Is not particularly smart.
  • Super-Speed: Has this, just like Kermit.
  • We Used to Be Friends: He and Melody used to date before breaking up and becoming enemies.
  • Who Names Their Kid "Dude"?: Prince is his actual name, and Skyblack certainly thinks it to be cheesy.

    Sammi
A mercenary hired by Oscurita.

    Yoruwa
A Japanese ghost girl who worked alongside Akihiko and Skyblack to help Oscurita in her research of the Starchild.

    Akihiko
A distant relative of the Wildfire who worked alongside Yoruwa and Skyblack to help Oscurita in her research of the Starchild.
  • No Full Name Given: His first name is purposefully kept a mystery, with only his last name being known.
  • Walking Spoiler: It's hard to talk about him without also talking about Sky's past and the Starchild's existence.

The Labrats:

An intended Evil Counterpart to the Hoodrats lead by Skyblack.
    Skyblack
An enigmatic member of the Bottom Layer who forms the "Labrats" with Prince in order to deal with the Hoodrats and gain fame.

She's also the comic's own version of Friday Night Funkin's Recurring Fanon Character Sky.

  • Adaptational Villainy: While the original Sky wasn't a good person either, Skyblack is even worse, showing to be overall more dangerous and violent. On top of that, per invokedWord of God, she didn't even have a genuine crush towards Boyfriend but wanted him in a relationship simply to raise her social status due to him being famous.
  • Arc Villain: The main antagonist of the "Vs Labrats" arc.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: Outright described by ShutUpJoJo as being at "mustache twirlin' levels of dastardly" in terms of how evil she is. In fact, she even thinks Oscurita isn't "devious enough", and claims that she and Prince shall show Oscurita what it truly means to be "devious".
  • Clothing Appendage: Her outfit is actually part of her body, and she can morph it into whatever she wants. It primarily appears as a black-and-red sailor uniform.
  • The Dragon: She used to be Oscurita's original right-hand (wo)man, working for her alongside a team to help in her research of the Starchild.
  • Faux Affably Evil: While Sky mostly acts like a Mellow Fellow, it's pretty clear that she's much more dangerous than what she gives for. A poor Little and Stella learnt it in the hard way.
  • Humanoid Abomination: She may look human on the surface, but her outfit is part of her body, she can spawn clones of herself at will, and whenever she opens her mouth wide, multiple eyes can be seen inside.
  • Nightmare Face: Skyblack does this more than once, usually when the comic wants to highlight how dangerous and evil she is.
  • Psycho Pink: Her eyes are pink in official artworks, and she's one of the bad guys.
  • Self-Duplication: Her power, "Endless Runner"note , allows her to create clones of herself, which she has full control over.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: While when she was younger she worked for Oscurita, she also was much less malevolent than she currently is.
  • Vile Villain, Saccharine Show: So far, Sky comes off as the most serious villain of the comic.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Aside from being willing to fight the Hoodrats, she also grabs Stella by the neck and chokes the poor girl to the point of making her seemingly pass out.

Guardians:

    In general
Powerful superheroes with the duty of protecting the land they belong to. They are also the users of the capes.
  • Nice Mean And In Between: Their relationships with the Hoodrats. Cindy is the Nice, sharing an Intergenerational Friendship with the gang, Marbles is the Mean, viewing them as nothing but trouble and even having bad blood with Melody, and Sun Wukong is the In-Between, being neutral about the gang and not viewing them as something to make a fuss about.

    Sun Wukong
One of the best fighters in the world, and the owner of the CAPE that Oscurita tends to use for her world domination plan. He's also the protector of the Skylands.
  • The Ace: Is stated to be one of the best fighters in the world.
  • Blood Knight: Shows up out of nowhere to fight Kermit in "Fighters!" just for the thrill.
  • Early Installment Character-Design Difference: In his first appearance, he had spiky Anime Hair. As of "Exchange!", he now has a tail and dreadlocks.
  • Killed Off for Real: He ends up getting killed in his fight against Skywhite.
  • N-Word Privileges: Calls Marbles the N word more than once in "VS LabRats! (Part 4)"
  • The One Guy: The only male Guardian.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: After Skid assists Kermit in fighting him, Sun Wukong decides to cut his losses and dip.
  • Shout-Out: His superpower is called Goku. He even has "Goku" as a nickname and calls in a cloud to ride on by shouting "Nimbus", like Goku.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Bread, as he's said to like it and is shown eating some in "VS LabRats! (Part 4)".
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Believes himself to be such when he accidentally leaves the CAPE behind and the Hoodrats get a hold of it, saying that if he doesn't get it back, it could spell doom for everyone. Given that later issues show that Kermit is now possessed by the entity from within the cape, his fears are justified.

    Cindy Brentworth (spoilers unmarked)

Skywhite

The reincarnation of Ce-Cerin and the embodiment of envy, who wishes to obtain the Starchild's power. To achieve this goal, Skywhite assumed two different identities: the retired superheroine and former Sky Guardian "Cindy Brentworth" and the supervillainess and mayor of the Bottom Layer "Oscurita".
  • Affably Evil: To Kermit. She enjoys her fights with him, and even allows him to answer his phone when it starts ringing.
  • Always Someone Better: As Cindy she instantly stops Prince dead in his tracks in her debut by holding her hand out and grabbing him.
  • Amicable Exes: With Kermit's Dad, though she does feel emberassed upon meeting his wife.
  • Anime Hair: Her hair spikes upwards in hero mode.
  • Benevolent Boss: Treats her right-hand man Prince like he's her adopted son, even medicating him should he get hurt. That being said, she's not immune to getting angry at him.
  • Big Bad: She's the main baddy of the comic, and the Arch-Enemy of the Hoodrats.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Skywhite is initially introduced as the benevolent retired superheroine Cindy Brentworth... who is then revealed to also be the supervillainess Oscurita.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: Revels in being evil, and her plan to Take Over the World is "for fun".
  • Cat Girl: Her design was eventually modified to make her one, although this was shown in-comic only starting from "Exchange!"
  • Evil Is Hammy: Has her moments of getting excited, particularly when her plans go well, and she's quite upbeat when that's the case.
  • In-Series Nickname: "Cindy Brentworth" is her superhero nickname, while "Oscurita" is her supervillain one.
    • She also receives nicknames from various other characters. For example, Sun Wukong calls her "Ci-Ci".
  • Intergenerational Friendship: With the Hoodrats. She's 51 yearsnote  old while the Hoodrats are teenagers... although it's not exactly a genuine friendship.
  • Jack of All Trades: Labelled as such.
  • Laughably Evil: She's far from devoid of comedic moments.
  • Long Neck: The latest redesigns have given her this for her disguised form.
  • Mad Scientist: Other than being a demon and the "mayor" of the Bottom Layer, she's also an evil scientist.
  • No Mouth: When she's disguised as Oscurita, her mouth isn't visible, and so text appears in the boxes to clarify what she's currently feeling. With that being said, however, it's shown that when she was younger her mouth was visible even with her smoke disguise on.
  • Two Aliases, One Character: "World of Lines!" reveals that Cindy/Skywhite and Oscurita were the same person all along.
  • The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything: Is labeled as the "mayor" of the Bottom Layer, but she's never seen doing any mayor duties, being more focused on her evil plans.
  • Prehensile Hair: Her hair is made up of tentacles that can stretch very long. She primarily uses them for fights.
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: As Oscurita, although it's more of a hot pink and black and evil all over.
  • Wing Ding Eyes: Her right eye is replaced with a star in hero mode.
  • Would Hurt a Child: She actively fights the Hoodrats, who are teenagers.

    Marbles
A jester-like heroine serving as the Land Guardian.

Other Characters:

     Stella The Kid
Kermit's twin sisternote .
  • Big Brother Worship: Became Twin Brother Worship after the retcon. Anyway, she thinks that Kermit is cool, and she wants to do cool stuff just like him.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Voiceover variant. She calls Kermit on the phone in "Villain!" before making her proper debut in "Mystery!".
  • His Name Really Is "Barkeep": Being Kermit's sister, her family name is also "The Kid".
  • Stronger Than They Look: Is stated to be just as strong as her brother (if not stronger than him).
  • So Much for Stealth: Her attempt at overhearing Skyblack's evil plans in "Secret!" goes awry when she knocks over a crate, which leads to Skyblack catching her shortly afterwards.

     Kermit's Parents
Kermit and Stella's parents.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Kermit's Mom is the focus of "Old Flames", which reveals how she and her husband met each other.
  • Damsel in Distress: "Old Flames" reveals Kermit's Mom used to be this, having been kidnapped by Oscurita, seemingly just for the sake of attracting a hero to fight. She didn't mind it at first, as she found it fun watching Oscurita fight the heroes, but eventually found the heroes that would come to be boring.
  • Ham and Deadpan Duo: Have shades of this. Kermit's Dad is the Deadpan, being very reserved in his speech and not very expressive, while Kermit's Mom is the Ham, excitedly shouting "Guess WHO'S HOME" upon arriving, and glomping her husband immediately after she walks through the door, with a huge smile on her face the whole time.
  • His Name Really Is "Barkeep": Being Kermit and Stella's parents, their family name is also "The Kid".
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl / Tiny Guy, Huge Girl: Depends on Kermit's Mom's current form. In Toon form, she's shorter than her husband, while in Flapper form she's taller than him.
  • No Name Given: They're only ever referred to as "Kermit's Dad" or "Dad The Kid" and "Kermit's Mom" or "Mom The Kid" respectively. During his time as a hero, Kermit's Dad was simply referred to as "The Kid".
  • Retired Badass: Kermit's Dad was a legendary hero, but retired once he became a father.
  • Sizeshifter: Kermit's Mom has the power to change between two different forms: Toon and Flapper. One form is taller than the other. When introduced in "Trouble!", Kermit's Mom is stated to be a retired actress, though it's never elaborated at to which form she'd primarily use during her career. In present day, she stays in her Toon form.
  • Terrible Pick-Up Lines: Subverted. Not too long after rescuing Kermit's Mom from Oscurita, The Kid said to her "You look like my first wife", which in most cases would certainly sound like this trope, but not too long after he said the line and then elaborated that he hasn't ever married, Kermit's Mom fell in love with him, leading to them hooking up and eventually marrying.

    The Wildfire
A hero who fought Oscurita in the '70s. The first in a line of heroes.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: He's only called with his superhero title, with his real name being unknown. That being said, since his relatives' last name is "Akihiko", it's possible that it's the same for him.
  • Pungeon Master: Very fond of making heat-related puns. Oscurita liked to play along with said puns, while Kermit's Mom found said puns to be annoying.

    Abby
A mysterious individual who traded the amulet with Oscurita the amulet to summon Yoruwa with... something.
  • Lord of the Ocean: Described as the "queen of seas, storms and all that jack".
  • The Voiceless: Doesn't say a single word in the short time she's onscreen. Even the comic describes her as "non-verbal but not non-violent".
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: She's introduced just to show how Oscurita managed to summon Yoruwa, and then disappears from the comic completely.

    Isao Akihiko and Kujo Akihiko
Two distant relatives of the Wildfire who were called by Oscurita to possibly assist her in the research of the Starchild.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Both of them make a single appearance in a single panel in the ENTIRE webcomic, never to be seen again due to the third Akihiko being chosen over them.
