Main Characters

     Morrow

Morrow

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fflii_morrow_artwork.jpg
The main character of the game, a young man from Navos Village on an island in the center of the world. When he goes to investigate the meteor that landed outside the village, his journey across time begins. Lives with his grandfather.
  • The Hero: The main character of the story and its most heroic.
  • Hero Worship: Towards Wrieg, who he wants to emulate as an adventurer.
  • Jumped at the Call: He practically leapt at the chance to become an adventurer like Wrieg, and had been begging Wrieg for some time before the story even started to let him come along.
  • Meaningful Name: Morrow is a real name, but in this context it comes from "tomorrow," appropriate for a hero in a time travel game.
  • Non-Elemental: His most powerful Signets are this, learned from the Chrono Dragon Signet.
  • Raised by Grandparents: Raised by his grandfather, who turns out to be the former king of Mysidia, Doga, who was hurled forward in time after Mysidia's cataclysm.

     Aemo

Aemo

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ffii_aemo_artwork.jpg
A girl from the future, found after a meteor crash landed on Navos (which was her time machine). Despite her loss of memories, she journeys with Morrow, Mootie, and Wrieg to find the cause of "Judgment Day."
  • Emotionless Girl: Though her lack of emotions are due to a lack of human interaction in the future. Character Development eventually sets in and she becomes friendlier and open with her emotions, though she always stays a little more withdrawn.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: When first found, the only thing she can remember is her name.
  • Light 'em Up: Her primary element.
  • Mysterious Waif: Practically the textbook definition.
  • White Magician Girl: She can be played this way depending on what signets you give her, but she is just as likely to become an offensive mage, especially later in the game.

     Mootie

Mootie

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fflii_mootie_artwork1.jpg
A baby dragon that Morrow finds shortly after he discovers Aemo and names Mootie. Later on, after going to the Eidolon World, Eidola, they discover that Mootie is not just one of them, but Bahamut himself, the king of dragons.
  • A Child Shall Lead Them: He is one day meant to become the leader of the eidolons.
  • Head Pet: Mootie can often be seen perched on someone else's head.
  • Jack of All Trades: Mootie can be used in every battle as a fourth party member, though he can only use one signet at a time and cannot master them like everyone else does. Furthermore, his abilities have no MP cost.
  • Red Baron: Eidolord.
  • Team Pet: He mostly follows along with the party, though unlike many others he is very important to the plot and can be used in every battle.

     Wrieg

Wrieg

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fflii_wrieg_artwork.jpg
A well-known adventurer from the modern day affiliated with a company called C.I.D. Inc. Morrow has looked up to him for quite some time, and he gets involved when he went to go investigate the same meteor fall himself.
  • Big Brother Mentor: Though not related, he takes on this role towards Morrow.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: His primary element.
  • Face Doodling: His Episode 1 shows he was gonna do this to a passed out Morrow when the party was taking Leviathan's trial until they get interrupted by goblins.
  • The Lancer: To Morrow. Appropriately, he can wield lances and uses the Dragoons' iconic jumps.

     Jornee

Jornee

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fflii_jornee_artwork.jpg
An elf princess from the Middle Ages. A frequent victim of kidnapping from Deathlord and his undead army, she gets involved with the plot when the party goes to rescue her and she learns about their time traveling adventures. Eager to come along and escape her sheltered life, she becomes a helpful and valuable ally.
  • Been There, Shaped History: Chapter 2-2 has her be the one who accidentally gives Sorgue the name of Deathlord during his confrontation with Minwu.
  • Cool Big Sis: To Aemo and later Maina, whom she looks after and gives plenty of advice to.
  • Damsel in Distress: As mentioned, she is a frequent victim of kidnapping from Deathlord, but she eventually comes to pity and sympathize for him.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Blonde haired and perhaps the kindest person in the cast.
  • The Heart: The group's primary moral center, most prone to outward displays of emotion and Sympathy for the Devil.
  • Jumped at the Call: Like Morrow, she leapt at the chance to journey through time.
  • Lady of Black Magic: She is the party's specialized magic caster who can use almost any element.
  • Mage Marksman: One of the possible builds you can give her by letting her wield a bow and arrows.
  • Making a Splash: Her primary element, though she can use almost all of them between all of her spell options.
  • Meaningful Name: Jornee has always wanted to go on a journey.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: She is a princess who is very eager to save the fabric of time itself.
  • Sheltered Aristocrat: Sometimes she can be a little naive, but she is excited to have the chance to have friends for the first time.

     Parai

Parai

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fflii_parai_artwork.jpg
A half dwarf outcast from the Middle Ages. Living in seclusion deep in the mountains, some consider him to be some type of monstrous ogre - in reality, he is trying to stave off the ogres and get revenge for the one who killed his father many years ago.

     Maina

Maina

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fflii_maina_artwork.jpg
A young ninja in the present day, descendant of a clan of ninja from the Middle Ages who devoted themselves to protecting history. Living on her own, she resists joining the party at first but eventually becomes a steadfast ally.
  • Blow You Away: Her primary element, though she has access to several with her ninjutsu signets.
  • Bratty Half-Pint: At first, until she warms up to the gang.
  • Expy: She is more or less a mix of both Yuffie and Eiko in personality, story role, and even appearance.
  • Frog Ninja: She summons one of these at you with Shikigami as a boss at Bya'ko Heights during Episode 1-1.
  • Genki Girl: After she joins the party, she becomes its most energetic and outgoing.
  • Last Of Her Kind: The last of the modern day ninja, and eager to carry on their traditions.
  • Mysterious Watcher: The way she's introduced, spying on the party.
  • Scarf of Asskicking: A long, purple-pink one.
  • Unwitting Pawn: To Marina, the woman from Ajima running for President, who manipulates Maina into stealing plans for the Flare Weapon from C.I.D. Inc.

Ancient Mysidia

     Sorgue/Deathlord/Dr. Black

Sorgue/The Deathlord/Dr. Black

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fflii_deathlord_artwork.jpg
A Sage and former Grand Black Mage of ancient Mysidia who specializes in black magic. After achieving immortality, he is encountered throughout the story in a number of different roles - first as the villainous Deathlord in the Middle Ages, then as the foul-tempered but less villainous scientist Dr. Black in the modern day, and finally once again with his true name, Sorgue, surviving all the way to the Bad Future.
  • The Atoner: In the far future.
  • Casting a Shadow: His primary element of choice.
  • Expy: Of Magus, from Chrono Trigger. Their sprites look somewhat similar, they wield the same weapon, and they even have a similar role in the story.
  • I Have Many Names: His true name is Sorgue, but he takes on different identities throughout the ages, before settling on his true name again in the future.
  • Immortality Seeker: In Mysidia. It's considered forbidden magic, but he succeeds.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: Just look at him!
  • Mad Scientist: The party assumes he would be one as Dr. Black, but by the modern day he has mellowed out a little bit and isn't as antagonistic anymore.
  • My Future Self and Me: After he joins the party as Deathlord, you can bring him to meet his future selves.
  • Necromancer: As Deathlord he is one, and he leads an undead army of skeletons.
  • Promoted to Playable: In the Eureka arc - though oddly, it's as his most villainous iteration, Deathlord, though by that point the party knows about the good he is capable of, thanks to his future selves.
  • Sinister Scythe: He wields one as his primary weapon.
  • Sixth Ranger: He is the last to join the party, as Deathlord.
  • The Slow Path: He's an immortal, so he is encountered in every time period the party goes to, living out his days under various identities. He even survives all the way to the Bad Future.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: As Dr. Black, he was actually the person who developed the Flare Weapon for C.I.D. Inc., which Marina eventually got her hands on and used to develop the weapon, thereby creating Chaos Bahamut in the original timeline.

     Chronos

Chronos

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ffd2_chronos.jpg
A mysterious girl that the party finds encased in crystal in a Place Beyond Time, who tells them of the beings attacking the fabric of history. Native to Mysidia, she was a gifted mage who was locked away for some reason with only a moogle for company, even though she can communicate with someone standing outside of her crystal.
  • Big Damn Heroes: She sends Atomos to suck up the heroes and bring them to a different time on numerous occasions to spare them from a gruesome fate.
  • Big Good: The best candidate for the role in the story, as the person who guides the party on their journey.
  • Child Prodigy: Just like her brother.
  • Expy: Of Schala, from Chrono Trigger, or more specifically the "Chrono Cross" version of her - white outfit, blonde hair, and trapped in a crystal in a realm beyond time itself. She also has a brother who was lost during a great cataclysm.
  • Happily Adopted: By Minwu, in her backstory.
  • Human Popsicle: Encased in crystal, but she can still communicate with anyone who visits her space in the Rift.
  • Ms Exposition: She and her moogle companion, Mog, are the ones who explain many plot points to the party, such as Mootie's identity.
  • Time Master: Sought to become one. It was her and Kairos's research into forbidden time magic that led to the Mysidia Crisis, which resulted in Chronos being encased in crystal and Kairos, Doga, Unei, Minwu, and Sorgue being lost to time.

     Kairos

Kairos

Chronos's twin brother, himself a gifted mage. However, he went missing after the Cataclysm of Mysidia, lost to time. He ended up in the future, where he lived out his life in (relative) happiness and chose to be cloned. Sorgue went to work and made many that failed, but one clone did survive - Wrieg, who got sent to the present day and was raised there.
  • Child Prodigy: Like his sister, one of the best in Mysidia despite his age.
  • Expy: Janus, from Chrono Trigger. Subverted, in that if Wrieg is anything to go by they don't look alike, and he doesn't become evil. In fact, Janus's adult role is fulfilled by someone else. He does however share the same tragic origin story, and is similarly seperated from Chronos across time.
  • Happily Adopted: By Minwu.
  • Posthumous Character: He's never found alive - he dies sometime after being sent to the future but we do meet a clone of his, Wrieg.
  • Time Master: Like his sister, he sought to become one.

     Minwu

Minwu

The Grand White Mage of Ancient Mysidia, and adoptive father of Chronos and Kairos.

The Middle Ages

     Nazz

Nazz

A woman from the village of Hagakure to the east. She turns out to be the human form of Suzaku, one of the eidolons, and leader of The Four Gods who are the protectors of the east who took human form to live among them and see how they would develop across time.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: She, along with Seiryu, Genbu, and Byakko, sacrifices herself to defeat the Four Fiends and allow the party to defeat Chaos Bahamut.
  • Playing with Fire: She is capable of using potent fire magic in battle. Fittingly, since she is really Suzaku.
  • Secret Test of Character: Nazz and the other three Holy Beasts put the party through one in order to see if they are worthy of protecting the eastern country, Ajima, from the Gigants that will attack, concerned about the sinister power influencing them.

The Present Day

     Gad

Gad

Morrow's grandfather, who lives in Navos Village.
  • Cool Old Guy: He is nothing but helpful, friendly, and supportive to Morrow and his friends throughout the game.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Morrow never tells him of his time traveling adventures, until it turns out Gad is really Doga.
  • Parental Substitute: To Morrow.
  • Really Royalty Reveal: He turns out to be King Doga from Ancient Mysidia, thrown forward in time after the Mysidia Crisis.

     Marina

Marina

A woman from the eastern country of Ajima who is planning to run for President. Her real identity is Marilith, one of the Four Fiends that the party encountered throughout history.
  • The Dragon: To Chaos.
  • Manipulative Bitch: She manipulates Maina into stealing the plans for the Flare Weapon from C.I.D. Inc., which leads to Ajima firing the weapon upon Westa some time in the future and results in Mootie becoming the God of Destruction. All according to plan.
  • Playing with Fire: Her specialty.

     Cramer XIII

Cramer XIII

The president of C.I.D. Inc. in Westa, and a close friend of Wrieg's who sponsors his adventuring. His company develops weapons for use in the war against Ajima to the east, with plans for mechanical soldiers and the Flare Weapon provided by Dr. Black.

The Future

SPOILER CHARACTER: The God of Destruction

Bahamut

The God of Destruction is the future form of Mootie, whose real name is Bahamut, and the cause of The End of the World as We Know It. Sometime in the future, Bahamut tries to stop a nuclear blast fired from the east, Ajima, toward the western country of Westa. Since the blast was infused with Chaos energy, it results in him turning into Chaos Bahamut, the God of Destruction, and destroying the world.
  • Big Bad: The true villain of the story is Chaos, which constructs its own form from Mootie's cells and names itself Chaos Bahamut.
  • For Want Of A Nail: In the original timeline, the God of Destruction was Mootie corrupted by chaos energy. After the party changes history, however, Chaos itself makes a copy of Bahamut and possesses it, becoming Chaos Bahamut anyway.
  • Future Me Scares Me: The future form of Mootie, who clashes with the party as soon as they go into his time period. Only Chronos's timely intervention saves them when she sends Atomos to suck them back into the Rift.
  • One-Winged Angel: In his Final Boss fight he transforms into Neo Chaos Bahamut.
  • Taking the Bullet: Essentially how Mootie becomes the God of Destruction - he takes the nuclear blast meant for Westa, and the chaos energy within it corrupts him... all according to Marina's ( AKA Marilith's) plan to spread chaos.
  • Walking Wasteland: He has devastated the future and turned it into a scorching wasteland, and what is left of humanity hides away in solitude.

Eidola

     The Eidolons

The Eidolons

The summons from throughout the Final Fantasy series. Eidola is their world outside of time.

  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Later in the story this happens to them and they all must be fought to free them.
  • Ethnic Goddess: Shiva is essentially this for the elves in the Middle Ages, and she forms a close relationship with Jornee as a result.
  • Guest-Star Party Member: Odin, Shiva, Ifrit, Titan, Ramuh, and Leviathan all become playable temporarily for boss fights against the Primals after they attack, pairing up with different members of the party. Ramuh pairs with Maina, Parai with Ifrit, Wrieg with Titan, Jornee with Shiva, etc.
  • Humans Are Bastards: Ifrit staunchly believes this after the Mysidia Crisis, and outright attacks the party when he meets them. It is only at Mootie's urging that he stops and reluctantly accepts them.
  • Rank Scales with Asskicking: Two of the strongest eidolons are Odin and Shiva, the king and queen of Eidola.
  • Threshold Guardian: Titan is the guardian of Eidola, and fights the party early on in their journey to test their worth before they enter.

Eureka

     Fake

Fake

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ffdii_fake.png
A mysterious man who appears in the wake of the Chrono Dragon's attack. Noted as looking like an older version of Morrow, his origins remain a mystery until he guides the party to Eureka. After the events of the game, he falls in love with Mist and fathers Morrow.
  • Bodyguard Crush: He is meant to watch over Mist, but over time he falls in love with her.
  • Humanshifting: His true form isn't a human. He is the Chrono Dragon that had been pursuing them.
  • Identical Stranger: To Morrow. The party gives him the name "Fake" because he's a fake Morrow. It's because, as the Chrono Dragon, he took on a human form and modeled himself after Morrow.
  • Mirror Match: With Morrow, at one point.

     Mist

Mist

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ffdii_mist.png
The fayth for the Primals of Eureka - a priestess of sorts who was brought into existence to provide prayers to the Primals. When the Chrono Dragon rages across spacetime, she calls out to Morrow for help. She falls in love with Fake, and when she gets locked together with him in a void outside of time, the two have a baby that they are able to release from their void. That baby was Morrow, who is found and raised by Gad.
  • Ethereal White Dress: She wears white, and has all the usual mysterious connotations of the trope.
  • Gold and White Are Divine: Her two primary colors, signifying her importance and fitting her status as a priestess. Appropriate, since she comes from a dimension of beings even older and stronger than the Eidolons.
  • The Voice: At first, until she manifests in Morrow's world.

     The Primals
Eight beings from Eureka even older and more powerful than the Eidolons. They invade from their dimension and overpower the forces of Eidola. They consist of Odium, Seismiche, Bastardo, Plaisir, Spirale, Chrono Dragon, and Starbow, their leader.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: It turns out all of them are under Odium's control, and when freed and under Starbow's light they are actually pretty benevolent.
  • Deus est Machina: The Chrono Dragon is essentially part dragon, part machine, part god.
  • Elemental Embodiment: Essentially what they are.
  • Killer Rabbit: Plaisir is an adorable rabbit-looking creature that sort of resembles the Final Fantasy depiction of Carbuncle... though he is far deadlier than he appears.
  • Red Baron: They are known as the Prismatic Gods. Plaisir, for example, is the Prismatic God of Wind and Delight, while Bastardo is the Prismatic God of Flame and Fury.
  • Time Abyss: They are even older than the eidolons, but extremely malevolent.
