Main Characters

    Luna
A huntress who is first seen camping out in Tajin Forest.
  • Amazonian Beauty: Trish claims Luna is muscular for a woman.
  • Badass Normal: She's a human with powerful archery skills in a party with only one other human.
  • Critical Hit Class: Her fighting style is based on having a high crit rate and high critical bonus damage. Later, she learns the Fury buff, which allows her to gain another buff based on how many critical hits she can land.
  • Item Caddy: Her Rations skill allows her to consume multiple fruits at once to heal the entire party, making the fruits more potent than when they're used normally. Upgrades to this skill allows her to restore MP and TP as well.
  • Lightning Bruiser: She has the highest agility, can deal critical hits easily, and has good defenses.
  • Revenge: The reason for her seemingly random camping in the beginning of the game is because she's training and waiting to take revenge on the empire for killing her father. Though later on, her motivation also includes concern for the Magi that she befriends.
  • The Straight and Arrow Path: She wields a bow in combat.
  • You Killed My Father: The empress had Luna's father killed for trying to spare Magi, and forced Luna to watch the execution.

    Damien
A White Magi from the Tajini Tribe, who is first seen fleeing from imperial soldiers.
  • The Ace: He's noted to be one of the strongest White Magi, in both offensive ability and healing ability. Brahman eventually anoints him as the Supreme of Light.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Combined with Good Is Not Soft. He's the ideal White Magi by being kindhearted, patient, and willing to risk himself to help strangers despite his status as a fugitive. He also has no problem fighting back against the empire and has little sympathy for them given their atrocities against his people.
  • Combat Medic: While healing mages from other RPGs usually have separate skills for offense and healing, Damien has two offensive spells that heal the party at the same time. His normal attack also performs light healing on the party.
  • Deflector Shields: Damien's playstyle revolves around not just healing, but converting any excess healing into shields that can soak up a certain amount of damage. His Divine Aegis buff can increase the amount of damage the shields can absorb.
  • Doomed Hometown: His village was destroyed by the empire, and he was the Sole Survivor of their purge.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Some bosses can inflict debuffs that deal damage upon expiration or direct curing. This means his Purify skill will backfire in these situations.
  • White Mage: He's a White Magi, who specializes in healing. Any excess healing becomes a barrier to soak up a certain amount of damage for the target.

    Trish
An Elemental Magi from the Hututsi clan who joins the party in Kalentina.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: She has a goofy personality, teases Luna a lot, and constantly hits on Ryudo, but she's one of the few Elemental Magi who can use all the elements. She is later revealed to be the current Elemental Magi Supreme.
  • Doomed Hometown: Hututsi was raided by the empire at some point, which is why Trish is a fugitive.
  • Elemental Powers: Played with. The game doesn't feature an elemental weakness system, and Trish's elements are instead differentiated by their different effects. Her skill names and icons show that she has control over fire, water, wind, earth, and poison.
  • Extra Turn: Her Mastery buff allows her to perform two non-instant actions per round, as long as the first action isn't the Defend Command.
  • Support Party Member: She has little offensive ability on her own and instead relies on buffs and debuffs, along with TP and MP restoring effects.

    Ryudo
A swordsman who joins the party after they help him escort a group of Magi through the Muyan Tunnels.
  • Badass Normal: He's a human with experience as an imperial soldier and relies on swordsmanship and armor. The only other human in the party is Luna.
  • Crusading Widower: His wife and child were kidnapped and killed by the empire for being Magi, causing him to rebel against his country.
  • Defector from Decadence: He was once an imperial soldier, but defected due to their genocide of Magi.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: He has scars all over his body due to imperial soldiers attacking him for marrying a Magi.
  • Lightning Bruiser: He'll either be this or Stone Wall depending on how high his TP is. Low TP increases his offense while high TP increases his defense.
  • Muggle–Mage Romance: He's a human who married a Magi.
  • Nonstandard Skill Learning: He learns the Instinct buff after Malfius uses it first and mocks his plight.
  • Stepford Smiler: He acts like a hopeless flirt around Luna, but he's carrying a lot of pain from losing his wife and child.

    Minerva
A Black Magi who was captured by the empire, only to use Blood Magic to kill her captors.
  • Demonic Possession: She's possessed by something in the ending as a result of Blood Magic weakening her soul. It's unknown is the culprit is Azael or some other dark entity, though it's implied to be Azael due to an easily missed animation where both Azael and Minerva glow as the party leaves Azael's soul. Averted in the Golden Ending, where Minerva's soul is cleansed.
  • Doomed Hometown: Her home, Surox Village, is destroyed by the empire for harboring Magi.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: Played with. Her father is human and her mother is Magi, but humans were descended from Magi.
  • It Sucks to Be the Chosen One: She's the next to become the Black Magi Supreme, which means the current Black Magi Supreme, Azael, wants her dead.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: In the normal ending, despite her efforts to reign in the side-effects of Blood Magic and use that forbidden power for good she falls victim to something possessing her body in the ending.
  • Squishy Wizard: Her spells consume HP while getting stronger the lower her HP is. Additionally, improving her MP reduction and using certain buffs also increases the HP cost of her spells. Fortunately, this is somewhat balanced by how her spells can generate shields, reducing the squishiness somewhat.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: In the true ending, Miranda's ghost purifies her soul so that she can't be possessed by anything, and Minerva gets to properly say farewell to her friend.
  • With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: The party has to fight her as a boss because she lost control of her Blood Magic, causing her to go insane. She only used that magic because the imperials kidnapped her and tried to kill her to extract her powers. After she joins, she has moments where she loses control of her powers due to trauma as shown when Florina and Miranda are killed.

Allies

    Jarl
A Spirit Magi who was under Ryudo's care.
  • Assist Character: During the boss battles in the Soul Forge, the player can spend soul gauge points to have him weaken or stun the enemy.
  • Weak, but Skilled: As a Spirit Magi, he isn't an offensive powerhouse, but his magic has a lot of utility in channeling spirits for long-range communication, healing the party, and weakening enemies associated with the Soul Forge.

    Jaibo
Minerva's human father, who is the elder of Surox Village.
  • Doomed Hometown: His village is destroyed after the events in Delta Fort.
  • Interspecies Romance: His late wife was a Magi.
  • Open-Minded Parent: He's understandably worried about Minerva going off to fight the Supreme who is gunning for her life, but accepts it anyways.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: He welcomes Magi into Surox and later asks the party to rescue the Magi who got detained in Delta Fort.

    Miranda
A Magi from the Enclave, as well as a friend to Minerva and Jaibo.
  • Backup from Otherworld: In the Golden Ending, she'll temporarily come back as a spirit to cleanse Minerva's soul, allowing the latter to live without the consequences of Blood Magic.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: The Council of Blood revive her, seemingly as a good gesture to the party, but they also put her under their control in order to infiltrate the Enclave. After the party brings the COSMOS back to the Enclave, Miranda steals it and brings it to Azael.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Azael tortures her to death in order to break Minerva.
  • Due to the Dead: She goes to Surox Village in order to cleanse the souls of the recent victims and send them to the afterlife. Unfortunately, the moment the ritual ends, Commander Tyrus kills her.
  • Facial Horror: While under Azael's control, her face is full of blood lines.
  • Marathon Boss: Her Echo counterpart is incredibly tanky, even by the standards of this game, due to having 900k HP and using two 600k shields.
    Krillin
The elder of the mountain-locked Treno village.
  • Palette Swap: Of Jaibo, due to both using the same stock RPG Maker MV assets for their field sprites and faces.
  • Retired Badass: In his prime, he was the strongest member of the Treno Guard, who are all ninjas given powers by the Soul Forge.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: He opposes the empires actions and is willing to harbor Magi. He later lends his soldiers to help fight back against the empire alongside the Enclave.

    Tido
A strange man who runs a shop to the southwest of Surox.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: He's capable of making bombs and making molds for soul weapons, but it'd be hard to tell at first glance due to his goofy personality.
  • The Hermit: He lives alone in the desert, though this is averted at the end of the game when the party helps him move to Treno.

    Rakku, Jinzo, and Nanami
The three Supremes in charge of the Enclave, a safe haven for Magi.
  • Bald Mystic: All three of them are bald mystical beings tasked with watching over the Enclave.
  • Big Damn Heroes: The Enclave Supremes teleport the party out of Azael's soul before it can collapse.
  • Big Good: As the leaders of the Enclave, the largest Magi settlement, they serve as powerful backers to the party.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: They send Magi to investigate the Runecrafting Shrine, but accidentally open a portal to the Seraphic Shrine, potentially allowing a multiversal threat into their world.
  • Passing the Torch: When a new Supreme successor is born, the power and immortality of the current Supreme slowly transfer to the new successor.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: They had no way of knowing this, but rescuing the party in the ending allowed whatever is possessing Minerva to get away with the COSMOS.

Antagonists

    Azael
The Black Magi Supreme and the leader of the Blood Council, who seeks to create a world where Blood Magi reign supreme.
  • Bald of Evil: In version 1.0.9 and earlier, other than the horns on his head, there isn't anything on top of his head.
  • Big Bad: He manipulated Empress Verona into starting a war against Magi, all as part of his scheme to eliminate his successor, claim the COSMOS relic, and Take Over the World.
  • Black Sheep: Of the Supremes, he is the only one actively hunting down his successor and using his powers for evil.
  • Brought Down to Badass: Combined with Worf Had the Flu. He manages to be a difficult Final Boss despite losing a lot of his power to Minerva, but ultimately loses to the party.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He has his share of sarcastic one-liners, such as when he asks if the party thinks he's a "big dumb bad guy" or if he should be afraid of their hours of grinding at the Seraphic Shrine.
Azael: "So you take a couple of hours to come here and all of a sudden I'm supposed to be afraid of you?"
  • Didn't See That Coming: He and his followers apparently didn't expect Empress Verona to sacrifice Magi to steal their powers, though her actions still end up helping their plans for the most part, until the empire fails to kill Azael's successor.
  • Faux Affably Evil: He's capable of politeness and compliments, even to humans that he normally sees as inferior, but underneath it all is a vicious darwinist who is willing to sacrifice anything for his immortality and racism.
  • Final Boss: He's the last boss of the game, fought after Sidamo Mountain is beaten.
  • Final-Exam Boss: Not only does he summon the first few bosses of the game, he also uses several of his disciples' spells and similar Damage Over Time status effects. Like Verona, he'll have sky-high defenses while his allies are alive, forcing the player to target them first.
  • Flunky Boss: He'll summon Ragos, Lagos, and Vygor as miniboss allies, and then revive them in a weakened state upon taking his One-Winged Angel form.
  • Horned Humanoid: In versions of the game before 1.1.0, he has horns growing out of his head, possibly as a consequence of Blood Magic.
  • Immortality Immorality: He's been killing his successors as Supreme for centuries just so he can keep his immortality and power. He's even willing to instigate a war againt Magi-kind in the hopes that his current successor gets killed by the empire.
  • In the Hood: In version 1.1.0 and later, his head is completely covered by a hood, obscuring his face.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: He's an Obviously Evil looking Blood Magi who clearly hates non-magic users, but when he first meets Luna, he compliments her for opposing the empire and helping the Magi, making him appear concerned about his fellow Magis' safety. Once the party makes it to the Magi Enclave, the other Supremes reveal that Azael masterminded the empire's genocide of Magi for his own selfish ambitions, making his previous sympathy insincere.
  • Magic Knight: He attacks with both melee and magic in his boss fight.
  • Motive Decay: Combined with Not-So-Well-Intentioned Extremist. He claims that he wanted to kill the first non-magic user in order to prevent future persecution of Magi. Even if that's true, it's clear that he has no care for his fellow Magi in the present, as shown by how he orchestrated the empire's genocide of Magi.
  • One-Winged Angel: After taking enough damage, he'll transform into a four-armed winged creature with two swords.
  • Orcus on His Throne: He discusses this trope, asking if the party thinks he's a big dumb bad guy who just sits and waits for the heroes to get stronger. He does have countermeasures designed to drive Minerva to insanity or take the party down with him regardless of their strength, though he never expected Brahman and the other Supremes to foil his plans.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: He gives Luna her class change, only because she's a useful pawn in taking COSMOS from the Twilight Temple.
  • Sadist: He takes utter glee in driving Minerva mad by torturing and killing Miranda in front of her.
  • The Social Darwinist: His racism against non-magic users eventually leads him to to deride both humans and "weak" Magi as unworthy. To that end, he seeks the powerful COSMOS relic to start his Eternal Twilight plan, where power-hungry Blood Magi such as himself will rule the world.
  • The Sociopath: He's manipulative, sadistic, thinks of himself as the rightful ruler of the world, has no empathy for the countless humans and Magi he got killed, and only drops his stoic and charming demeanor when he loses control of the situation.
  • Taking You with Me: Once the party snaps Minerva back to her senses, Azael flees into his own soul, hoping the party will follow him. Once they do so, he traps them inside so that in the event that they kill him, his soul will collapse and kill them along with him.
  • Time-Delayed Death: He can inflict a status effect that kills the target without fail upon expiration.
  • Title Drop: He calls his plan to wipe out the weak "Eternal Twilight."
  • Villainous Breakdown: He's normally a smug villain due to predicting the party's every move and manipulating them, but he freaks out when Brahman stops his plan to drive Minerva to insanity and promotes Damien to Supreme of Light, making it clear that the god of the world wants him dead.

    Empress Verona
The empress of an unnamed country, who wants nothing less than to kill all Magi.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: She secretly covets the Magis' powers. The Blood Council gives her powers by brainwashing her and transforming her into a blood and lava monster.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: She wishes to Take Over the World and enact genocide on Magi, but is just a pawn for Azael. One of her Magisters, Zaryte, is killed and revived as a mole for the Blood Magi, allowing them to infiltrate her palace and capture her.
  • Flunky Boss: She will summon Zaryte and Devi in her boss battle as miniboss allies, and she takes reduced damage until they're killed. At low HP, she'll revive them, but they'll be weakened for the rest of the fight.
  • Kick the Dog: Killing a soldier for defying her orders is bad enough, but dragging the soldier's daughter to watch the execution is incredibly petty.
  • A Nazi by Any Other Name: She desires the genocide of the Magi, stokes anti-Magi sentiment and paranoia among her army, turns several settlements into police states dedicated to hunting Magi and Magi sympathizers, has a dangerous Cult of Personality, and had a fort built that utilizes poison gas to kill Magi prisoners.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Azael expected the empire to swiftly kill his successor, but didn't expect that the empress wanted Minerva captured alive in order to extract her powers. This allows Minerva to escape their clutches and slowly take away Azael's power.
  • Not-So-Well-Intentioned Extremist: Combined with Straw Hypocrite. She claims that all Magi are devil-worshipping Blood Magi who need to die for the protection of humanity, and that the very nature of their magic is evil. Despite that, she has no issue killing any soldier or civilian who show sympathy to the Magi, and makes every town under her control miserable by having her soldiers stationed there to act as a police state. She kills the weaker Magi while capturing the stronger ones, only to sacrifice them to implant their magic into her loyal elite soldiers, meaning all her claims about the evils of magic are just a cover for her own lust for power.
  • One-Winged Angel: Blood Magi Nepto forces her to transform into a blood and lava monster.
  • Unwitting Pawn: While she went outside Blood Council's expectations by stealing magic from her victims, she still serving their purposes by killing innocent Magi, and nearly captures and kills the Supreme successor they were looking for. The Blood Council also manipulate her into going after specific Magi groups who inconvenience them, such as the White Magi who could potentially curb the effects of Blood Magic.
  • You Have Failed Me: A brainwashed Zaryte frames Devi for deserting Delta Fort, and Empress Verona orders Devi's execution without listening to a word she says. She also has Luna's father executed for refusing to kill a Magi.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: The Blood Magi capture and brainwash her because they already identified Minerva as the next Black Magi Supreme, meaning they no longer need Empress Verona's forces to hunt her down.

    Zaryte
A Magister of the empire, who follows the empress's orders without question.
  • Co-Dragons: He and Devi are the highest ranking subordinates of Empress Verona.
  • Hypocrite. When a Blood Magi tells him where his powers come from, Zaryte still tries to claim that the empress was justified in stealing magic and that his use of magic is somehow more righteous than the Magi.
  • Knight Templar: Like all the imperial soldiers, he's convinced that his side is in the right while all Magi are evil. Unlike Devi, he didn't know that his magic was stolen from Magi until a Blood Magi tells him, though he pulls some mental gymnastics to justify his use of magic.
  • The Magnificent: He's known as Zaryte the Beast due to his transformation into a demonic humanoid.
  • One-Winged Angel: He has the ability to transform into a demonic humanoid with increased physical ability.
  • The Worf Effect: When he fights a Blood Magi, he can't do any damage until he transforms, despite being higher-leveled than the party. Even then, the Blood Magi defeats him in one attack.
  • Villainous Valor: When the battle against a Blood Magi turns out to be hopeless, he tells Devi to retreat and report to the empress while he stays behind and tries to keep the Magi busy. The Blood Magi take advantage of this noble gesture to frame Devi for desertion.

    Devi
A Magister of the empire, who commands powerful gravity magic.
  • Co-Dragons: She and Zaryte are the highest ranking soldiers in the imperial army, though of the two, she seems to be more privy to the empress's plans for capturing strong Magi.
  • Gravity Master: All of her spell names indicate that they're gravity-based, though this doesn't really make them any different from other offensive spells shown in the game.
  • Straw Hypocrite: While Zaryte was initially unaware of the true nature of his powers, it's implied that Devi is privy to this secret. When the two of them investigate Delta Fort, Devi tells Zaryte that she's not allowed to tell him why Minerva was captured, showing that she most likely knows that the empire is stealing power from the strong Magi they capture, despite their claims that magic is evil.
  • The Worf Effect: In the battle against a Blood Magi, she can't deal any damage despite being higher-leveled than the party. Later, she's easily killed by a brainwashed Zaryte.
