    The Crusader

The Crusader

A young warrior and the only remaining person of the Great Crusade that was sent to the Citadel to vanquish the Old Gods. Serves as the protagonist of the game.

NPCs

    Edd the Wanderer

Edd the Wanderer

Location: The Citadel, The Spire, Steps of Ascension

A roaming bard who plays the harp and has traveled all throughout the Mainland. Came to the Citadel for unknown reasons.

    Rass, the Survivor

Rass

A crusader and the sole remaining warrior from the second Crusade. Has given up following the death of his comrades, and now awaits starvation.
  • Death Seeker: A particularly grim variant, as he's content to sit among his dead brethren and starve to death rather than face the old gods once more or try to return to his home.
  • Despair Event Horizon: Losing all of his comrades to the Watchers has done a number on his mental state.

    Edelon, the Blacksmith

Edelon

Location: The Crossroads

A grouchy, disgruntled blacksmith in the Citadel. The only survivor from the wall guard that used to watch over the guards.
  • Artificial Limbs: His arm is mechanical, and it seems to be a creation of his own making.
  • The Corruption: Long-Term Exposure to the power of the Old Gods has driven him mad, but also seems to have extended his lifespan.
  • Crazy Sane: The death of everyone he's ever known, plus constant exposure to the unstable power of the Old Gods, has driven him completely insane, to the point where the still believes that the Wall guard are active and defending the citadel.
  • Dissonant Serenity: Well, more like Dissonant Grumpiness, but he's perfectly calm in his smithing when just outside his forge the second crusade was slaughtered and the old gods still lurk.
  • I Reject Your Reality: Is still fully convinced that his comrades in the Wall Guard are alive, and they're just really behind on their payments. Several decades behind, to be exact.
  • The Madness Place: He's been smithing away for decades, unfazed by the fall of the Wall Guard, the Arrival and destruction of the Second Crusade, and the desolation.
  • Mask of Sanity: He seems pretty normal, if grumpy. Until you realize that the Wall Guard that he mistakes you for a member has been gone for decades.
  • Room Full of Crazy: He's been smithing away for a very long time, and his forge is filled with the thousands of weapons he's made, scattered around haphazardly as he moves on to the next one.

    Crow Lord Darkyn

Crow Lord Darkyn

Location: The Crossroads

A mysterious being who worships the Deep One.
  • Animalistic Abomination: Whatever he is, he is most certainly not a normal crow.
  • Creepy Crows: He and his flock fit this to a T. They're pitch black, speak in ominous tones about shadows and the world being reborn, and serve an Eldritch god with unknown intentions.
  • Polly Wants a Microphone: Him being a crow (or at least something that looks like a crow) doesn't stop him from talking your ear off about "Rebirth" and "The Deep".

    The Forest Sage

Location: The Everforest

A hunter who watches over the Everforest. Slowly dying as the forest is corrupted.

    The Frigid Father

The Frigid Father

The old ruler of the Frigid Waste, weak after centuries of Hyem sapping his power.

    The Burning Inquisitor

The Burning Inquisitor

Location: The Everforest

A member of the Bright Order, a cult that worships Azuk'tarr, the phoenix god.

Bosses

The Old Gods

    General
  • Captured Super-Entity: They are ancient gods that have been locked away for two centuries. Eksyll has been experimenting on them ever since.
  • Fantasy Pantheon: Created from the shards of the moon that fell to earth, each god has a very specific power set and theme.
  • Immortal Ruler: They used to be the rulers of the entire world until humanity revolted against them.
  • Jerkass Gods: They ruled as tyrants for centuries, before being deposed and locked away. Nowdays, they've slaughtered the entire second crusade.

    Azikel

Azikel, God of Light

Shard: Light Bringer

Location: The Crossroads

An Old God with the power of light. Ruled from a prosperous city built around his tower of light, before being sealed away for his cruelty and mass enslavement.
  • Devil's Pitchfork: He wields twin Bidents, and while he might have once been good, he devolved into a brutish Evil Overlord who built his tower of light with slave labor before being sealed away.
  • Fallen Angel: Previously one of the rulers of the world. Now nothing more than a mindless husk attacking anything that enters its prison.
  • Light 'em Up: Befitting his status and title as a god of light, the shard he drops grants the player light-based powers. Fittingly, the shard is called "Lightbringer".
  • Light Is Not Good: Has a heavy light and Angel theme, but enslaved humanity just like all the other gods. While he did create the tower of light, and the successful city around it, in the present day he's been reduced to a raging husk like all the other gods.

    Eos

Eos, God of Unity

Shard: United's Blessing

Location: The Crossroads

An Old God with the powers of both fire and water. Remained isolated from humanity and avoided corruption, but was still sealed away by the First Crusade.
  • Token Good Teammate: The only god known to escape Eksyll's Corruption, instead living peacefully in the wilderness. It didn't save them from the wrath of the First crusade.

    Hyem

Hyem, of the Frigid waste

Shard: Winter Fangs

Location: The Spire

An Old God with the power of ice. Usurped his position from the previous Ruler of the frozen waste
  • Evil Is Deathly Cold: One of the most vile of the Old Gods, and rules over an icy wasteland.
  • An Ice Person: His whole thing, being an Ice God. Tends to Freeze people solid or impale them with Spikes of Ice.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Tries to do this to the Crusader once he's gotten them frozen, almost killing them in one hit.
  • Power Parasite: Stole his power from the Frigid Father, leaving him nothing more than a barely-living skull.
  • Token Evil Teammate: He's the only one of the gods to be explicitly villainous, as opposed to be corrupted by Eksyll. He drained the power from his previous master to become the ruler of the Frigid waste, and seems to be perfectly on board with Eksyll's philosophy.

    The Deer God

The Deer God

Shard: Wild Hunt

Location: The Everforest

A Old god Dwelling in the Everforest. Normally appears as a Deer, but assumes its monstrous true form when challenged.
  • Animalistic Abomination: It's a vaguely humanoid monster covered in bloodstained fur with a deer's skull for a head.
  • Bait-and-Switch: Gets taken out by the Warden of Purity when he attempts to enter his second phase.
  • The Brute: Outside of some minor plant manipulation, the Deer god mostly attacks through brute force.
  • Wendigo: The Deer God is depicted as such, being a bestial monster with a deer's skull for a head. However, it lacks any connection to cannibalism or greed and instead acts as a primal god of the Wild.

    Drakmur

Drakmur, the Nightmare

Shard: Singularity Orb

Location: The Singularity

An Old God born from the fusion of a dead gods essence with an unfortunate mortal.
  • Came Back Wrong: Araynel's resurrection via possessing a mortal didn't end well for either party. Currently the resulting abomination is floating in the middle of a hellish pocket dimension.
  • Dark Is Evil: Uses the power of Darkness and Nightmares, and is currently distorting reality while butchering anything that comes near it.
  • Defeat Equals Explosion: Its clones inflate like balloons before exploding when it detonates them. When Drakmur dies, the same happens to the clones.
  • This Was His True Form: After killing it, the singularity collapses and you get to see Drakmur's true form: A human skeleton riddled with purple crystals

    Aryana

Aryana, First of the Moon

Shard: Lunar Inspiration

Location: Moon's Way

The first Old God to descend upon the world to help mankind, and the closest to the moon that created the gods. Her descent into Tyranny took the longest of the old gods
  • Fallen Hero: After Eksyll corrupted her, she became just as cruel as vile as her brethren. After the Second Crusade accidentally released her while storming the Citadel, she incinerated them by the dozens.
  • God of the Moon: She's called "First of the Moon", though interestingly, she was born when the moon shattered into debris, creating not only her and her fellow gods, but also the entirety of humanity. Thus, she is the only one with knowledge of what the moon looked like before.
  • The Paragon: She was once the kindest and wisest of the Old Gods. When Eksyll got his claws into her head, her descent into tyranny took the longest, which speaks volumes of her character.

     Eksyll

Eksyll, Princeps

Shard: None

Location: Temple of Ascension

The main antagonist, a rogue Old God who corrupted his brethren, and experimented on them to create the Watchers after they were imprisoned in the first crusade.
  • All Your Powers Combined: He steals the Essence of the fallen gods from the Crusader, gaining their abilities. It doesn't do him much good when the Crusader proceeds to kill him anyway.
  • Animalistic Abomination: Eksyll appears as a massive humanoid raven with a blood-red third eye. It gets weirder in his final form, where his head splits into three conjoined raven heads.
  • Creepy Crows: His longer beak identifies him as a raven, and he is the one responsible for everything that went wrong in Eldest Souls.
  • Dark Is Evil: He's associated with darkness and corruption, and is a vile tyrant who corrupted and enslaved his own kin — even Old Gods who were once heroes like Aryana.
  • Deal with the Devil: He made several with Zylad And King Otto of Mercia. It didn't work out well for either of them.
  • Final Boss: He's the final Old God that has to be killed to finish the game.
  • I Have Many Names: In addition to his title as Princeps, he is also known as "Imperator" and "Creator".
  • Large and in Charge: He is by far the largest Old God, and the de facto leader, though it's never confirmed if the others consider him that.
  • Orcus on His Throne: He spends the entire game plotting in the temple of Ascension, only taking action once all his brethren are dead.
  • Stationary Boss: On account of being so large that he has to attack you through the windows of the Temple of Ascension.
  • Villainous Breakdown: He undergoes one in the final phase of the fight, resorting to desperately trying to drain the life out of the Crusader.

Prisoners of the Forgotten Depths

    Zylad

Zylad, Lord of Steel

Shard: None

Location: Moonlight's End

Formerly one of Eksyll's generals and a veteran of the first Crusade, Zylad betrayed his master and was sealed away in Moonlights end for it. Zylad has the ability to control steel with his mind.

    The Rejected Daughter

The Rejected Daughter

Shard: None

Location: Moonlight's End

Eksyll's daughter, created to be his perfect heir by fusing human and Old God genes. When she turned out to be a failure, she was locked away in Moonlights end.

    The Rotting Crown

The Rotting crown

Shard: None

Location: Moonlight's End

Once known as King Otto of Mercia, the Rotting Crown sacrificed his crumbling kingdom to Eksyll in exchange for immortality. After using him to conquer the citadel, Ekysll sealed him in the depths of Moonlight's End.
  • The Caligula: After a disaster befell his kingdom and it began to crumble, he chose to sacrifice what remained to Eksyll rather than attempt to rebuild.
  • Deal with the Devil: Made one with Eksyll, trading his kingdom for Immortality and the power of the Old Gods. However, it didn't end well — while he gets while he wanted, Eksyl proceeded to use the King as his personal puppet before sealing him away in Moonlight's End, essentially abandoning him to rot.
  • Flunky Boss: Constantly reanimates the skeletons of his former subjects to attack the player, only stopping when he has a shield up.

Other Bosses

    The Watchdog

The Watchdog

    Warden of Purity

Other Characters

    The Deep One

The Deep One

An ancient being predating even the Old Gods. They were sealed away in a chasm for millennia but finally breaking free.
  • Advertised Extra: They feature heavily in promotional art, yet their only appearance in-game is in one of the endings.
  • Dark Is Evil: A massive eldritch god that consumes the essence of the other Old Gods when it rises. Other than that, its motives are unknown.

  • Eldritch Abomination: They're an ancient, massive eldritch god who appears as a giant tentacled eye. Its motivations are unknown, but them breaking free of their prison isn't going to end well for anyone.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: Eksyll's experiments on the Deep One's created the Desolation, and Edd seems to regard its release as an absolute worst-case scenario. Once it's released, it proceeds to consume the Old Gods.

    Xopither

Shard: Empire's Wrath

The greatest of the Old Gods, Xopither was killed during the first crusade with the help of Eksyll.
