Darkened Imagination
- Mad Scientist: Gaster is shown to be this, using those that are eliminated in the Losers Bracket as test subjects for his experiments.
- Plot-Triggering Book: Greg discovers a way to bring people from the real world into his diary to mess with them, kicking off the entire tournament.
Rowley's Friendsim
- The Bus Came Back: Rowley & MSPA Reader disappeared for nearly 4 rounds after their initial introduction before coming back for Round 5: The Ugly Truth.
Löded Diper
- Hostile Show Takeover: Rodrick's is notable because he's the first one to do it after he locks Greg in the basement. It ends after Frank cuts off the wi-fi for a week.
- We Hardly Knew Ye: Not Rodrick himself, but his bandmates, which have been relatively static during their time in the tournament.
Civil War Buddies
Sweetheart
Fregley & Co.
Dark Minds
Note: for tropes related to W.D. Gaster, see Darkened Imagination.
Contestants
Toby 'Radiation' Fox
- Leet Lingo: Every single one of his lines contain this.
- The Faceless: His face is never shown, though the top of his hair is visible.
Adam Conover
- Encyclopaedic Knowledge: Has a ton of knowledge and facts on topics which he uses to shatter misconceptions about them.
- Early-Installment Weirdness: Prior to Goners' Bracket, Adam acted heavily out of character to his Adam Ruins Everything interpretation. In 100C, he noticeably threatens Kebin much more than he ever would. This is noticeably corrected in his Goners' Bracket appearance, where he acts a lot more like his canonical self.
- Early Installment Character-Design Difference: Prior to his appearance in the Goner's Bracket, his design was wildly different with a different hair style, black pants, and giving the middle finger instead of pointing up.
- Foreshadowing: [S] Investigate heavily foreshadows Adam's return at the beginning of The Ugly Truth. Beyond the examples listed under Wham Shot, the Adam Ruins Everything theme can also be heard at the very end of the track, starting when the Ugly Truth logo was revealed in the video version.
- Reality Warper: Is able to do whatever he wants, even summoning other people. Lampshaded when MrBeast asks him why he doesn't just use his powers to get everyone out of the book.MrBeast: "You can just make people appear? Out of thin air? With all this power couldn't you get us out?"Adam Conover: "Oh, no. I only use my powers for learning!".
- Wham Line: Indirectly, but the last line of his experiment log varies wildly from the other due to him escaping his experiment."AS THE DARKNESSSURROUNDED HIMHE BEGAN TO CHUCKLEFOR HE KNEWSOMETHINGI DID NOT...THE COMEDIANHAS THELAST LAUGHTHE COMEDIANHAS THELAST LAUGH.......clone_obj.exezero percent complete"
- Wham Shot: Multiple instances.
- After his experiment, due to him escaping, instead of his playlist thumbnail becoming heavily distorted like other losers' before the reveal of their Goner form, Adam's render is completely blacked out, resembling being torn out of the page. Noticeably, this does not change until his return at the beginning of The Ugly Truth.
- During [S] Investigate, during the sequence of showing everyone's Round 1 and latest renders, instead of Adam's latest render being the "torn-out" version of his Losers' Round 1 render, it's a heavily shrunken, distorted version of what would later be revealed to be his Goners' Round 1 thumbnail. Later on in the same video, during the sequence of showing all of the Goners'/eliminated contestants, Adam's is a heavily distorted, unique drawing of him with no signs of experimentation that can only be viewed clearly at the last moment.
Jake Stone
- Evil Phone: When he becomes a Goner, his phone comes to life calling itself "THE WITNESS" and acts like a Jehovah's Witness. In Control Group 01-03 Phase 3, THE WITNESS takes control of Jake hanging him so they can fight "THE PUPPET".
- Parasitic Horror: THE WITNESS is this using Jake for survival. When he is eliminated and killed off, THE WITNESS reattaches itself to THE PUPPET ensuring that it wont be killed that easily.
- Ridiculously Average Guy: Compared to everyone else in the competition, Jake is the most normal one simply being a run of the mill insurance company worker.
- The Other Darrin: One of his sources in the Losers Bracket as a reference to him being replaced in the IRL "State Farm" commercials.
- This Is My Chair: Never seen out of his chair except for when he becomes a Goner.
- Tied Up on the Phone: His Goner form where his phone wraps around his neck like a Noose.
Guptill89
- Cosplay: His gloves & shoes are an obvious reference to Sonic the Hedgehog, and his The Ugly Truth outfit is very similar to that of Beat from Jet Set Radio. In fact, "Cosplay" is one of his sources in that same Round.
Edmund McMillen
- Body Horror: His appearance in the Losers Bracket has some unnerving features such as a wire clothes hanger stuck through his head and a small conjoined head.
- Leitmotif: The most notable example in the whole tournament, being This is Gospel by Panic! at the Disco.
- Verbal Tic: He only speaks in quotes from The Binding of Isaac.
Dubious Duo
- Professional Gaming: Ninja's entire career and MrBeast frequently hosting gaming tournaments.
- Straight Man and Wise Guy: Ninja is very competitive treating this whole tournament like a game while MrBeast knows the danger their in and is the voice of reason.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
- Cat Girl: Is a Cat Boy that frequently uses the words "nya" and replaces certain words with "w".
- Classical Music Is Boring: The reason why Greg put him in the tournament.
- Furry Fandom: His appearance and behavior are due to historical evidence that Mozart liked to imitate cats and the comparison to how members of the Furry Fandom act.
- Introverted Cat Person: Quite literally. He is very shy and lacks confidence when speaking. In Losers Bracket he begins to act more tough and confident but is still very reserved to himself.
- Punk: His Losers Bracket appearance has him become one complete with shaved hair, rings/piercings, tattered clothes, spikes, and an electric guitar.
- Retgone: after some unfavorable stuff with Mozart, he gets erased completely from the tournament and is replaced with Kirby.
DemonicKraken
- Official Fan-Submitted Content: Their inclusion in the tournament was because they asked Greg if they could be in it.
- Yandere: Became an obsessive killer after "You" invited them to a date.
Hamood Habibi
- Angelic Abomination / Fallen Angel: Due to Gaster experimenting on him after losing to Mozart, Hamood seemingly merged with his Demon Eye into THE HOLY CHILD, looking like a distorted Biblically-accurate angel.
- Biblical Motifs: Has angelic wings, tells others to not be afraid, and is referred to as "THE HOLY CHILD".
- Cassandra Truth: Tried warning others about the danger their in and how they need to work together to escape, but no one listened.
- Memetic Badass: Went from an ironic meme to a prophetic angel that can see the future and hold his ground in a fight.
Donald J. Trump
- Battle Rapping: One of his sources, which is a reference to his multiple appearances in "Epic Rap Battles Of History".
- Nuclear Mutant: His goner form occurred due to exposure to a radioactive liquid that mutated him.
- The Diss Track: The track "A MESSAGE.. TO THE INTRUDER..." is an amazing example of this.
- Trumplica: One of his sources is "Donald Trump Media" which includes any piece of Media that has made reference to him.
Kebin/Kebin & Ian
- Parody: Kebin & Ian originate from WillMcDaniel's video "Kevin's Bunker", which is a parody of "Shark Tank" where 4 small men named Kevin hear other similar looking meat alien's product pitches and decide whether or not to invest in them with those that fail meeting a unnerving fate.
AlphaGenos
- Straight Man and Wise Guy: Alpharad is very chill often making witty comments while PapaGenos is often keeping Alpharad in check making sure he doesn't go overboard.
The Eiffel Tower
- Eldritch Abomination: Revealed in The Ugly Truth to contain an Eldritch Monster.
- French Jerk: Hates everyone in the Tournament and finds pleasure in knowing their opponents will most likely die after losing to them.
- Living Statue: Is a sentient version of The Eiffel Tower that speaks French. Revealed in The Ugly Truth that it's alive due to containing an eldritch monster.
- Not Drawn to Scale: While always shown to be bigger than all the other characters, it's height varies with some showing it to be as tall as 3 "You"'s and other having it at mounstrous size.
Inugami Korone
- Appendage Assimilation: Her Goner form has her limbs removed and stitched back together.
- Catchphrase: "Yubi! Yubi!" which translates to "Finger! Finger!".
- Chainsaw Good: She obtains one in the Goner Bracket.
- We Hardly Knew Ye: As a result of going 0-3 and having only one unique vs. quote before her experiment, she had the absolute least characterization of the main roster.
Evil Morty
- Dimensional Traveler: Has a portal gun and tries using it to escape the book, only to realize he cant escape it.
- Evil Doppelgänger: Is an evil version of Morty from "Rick and Morty".
- Eyepatch of Power: Has a technological eyepatch, though he hasn't used it for anything yet.
- Obviously Evil: The reason why Greg put him in the tournament.
You
- Audience Surrogate: Is supposed to be "You" and have your favorite Songs, Artists, and Games.
- Author Avatar: Becomes "Me" in the Losers Bracket and changes appearance to more closely resemble the IRL tournament owner.
- Game Mod: In some of the later bracket matches, their duels are accompanied with a themed FridayNightFunkin mod.
