Rantaro's Group

    Rantaro Amami
Rantaro Amami

Ultimate ??? (Ultimate Adventurer)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/amami.png

The protagonist of the fic. A young man who wake's up inside Hope's Peak Academy, who doesn't remember why he was selected. He was selected as the leader of his group. He's one of the survivors.

  • Amnesiac Hero: Can't remember his ultimate talent.
  • Ascended Extra: Going from the first victim of his original game, to the protagonist of the fic.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Usually fairly kindhearted to the people around him, however he has limits, and results aren't exactly pretty when crossed.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Went travelling across the world to search for his younger sisters.
  • The Casanova: Often talks about the casual sex and dates he's had before Hope's Peak, along with the actual girlfriend's he's had.
  • Chick Magnet: Is stated to have been popular with girls in middle school, and directly mentions his ex on several occasions. This extends even to the killing game where he gets positive attention from Kaede, Miu, and Kirumi, at least before she hooks up with Shuichi.
  • Childhood Friends: With Kiyo.
  • Composite Character: More or less serves as a combination of both Makoto and Kyoko, taking elements from both to form his role the story. For Makoto, he acts as the protagonist, who ends up becoming a Hope Bringer for the world. For Kyoko, he has her intelligence and doesn't remember his ultimate talent at the beginning of the game.
    • He also takes a few points from Byakuya, such as being the heir to a large, wealthy family consisting mostly of siblings.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Surprisingly enough, he has a rather sharp tongue.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: He is crushed after his best friend is exposed as the culprit of the first trial.
  • First-Person Smartass: If he's not snarking out loud, he's doing it in his head.
  • Heroic BSoD: Ends up in one after the first trial, Ryoma snaps him out of it.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: He and Kiyo have known eachother since they were kids and have been best friends for years. His death ends up sending Rantaro into a Heroic BSoD for the beginning of Chapter 2 before he's able to get out of his funk.
  • Idiot Hair: A fork like one at the top of his head. This ends up being both fitting, as it matches up with his status as the protagonist, and ironic, as idiot is an unfitting word to describe him.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: In the original version of the story, in contrast to canon, he often acted snarky around his classmates, especially people like Kokichi and Miu, that could sometimes become actively malicious. On top displaying sleazy behaviour around Kaede, and sometimes having a short temper. That said, he still worked towards protecting them in the trials by clearing their name's and helping to find the murderer of every single case. On top of being the one to restore the survivors hope in the final trial, and ultimately defeat Kaito.
  • The Leader: Elected as the head of his team.
  • Massively Numbered Siblings: Mentions in his introduction that he's the oldest of 13 siblings.
  • Nice Guy: In the remake, he's a lot more in line with his canon self, being more laid back and friendly towards the class, with his unlikeable moments being toned down to the point of complete absence, while retaining the positive traits of his original fic personality.
  • Nightmare Face: Pulls a few in Chapter 2. As seen here
  • Official Couple: He and Kaede get together shortly after the third trial.
  • The Protagonist
  • Tap on the Head: Actually, being punched by Tenko at full force gives him a concussion.
  • Walking the Earth: Did this while searching for his sisters.

    Korekiyo Shinguji
Korekiyo Shinguji

Ultimate Anthropologist

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/korekiyo.png

Rantaro's childhood friend. A somewhat asocial young man who was selected by Hope's Peak for his studies in anthropology. The first to join Rantaro's group. He's the culprit of the first trial, murdering Kirumi to protect his older sister.

  • Adaptational Heroism: Unlike in canon, his nature as a serial killer is never brought up, and his the nature of his relationship with his sister doesn't delve into being incestuous, with his motive for killing Kirumi being to make sure that his sister is alive so that he can take care of her until she recovers from her illness, significantly more noble than in canon.
  • Childhood Friends: With Rantaro.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Beaten by whips at eaten by scarabs.
  • Decoy Protagonist: Built up as Rantaro's main platonic friend within the killing game, but ends up as the culprit of the first trial.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Rantaro. His death ends up sending Rantaro into a Heroic BSoD for the beginning of Chapter 2 before he's able to get out of his funk.
  • Likes Older Women: Rantaro states that he has a preference for older girls. Or rather had, as this was mentioned long after his death in chapter 1.
  • Slashed Throat: How he kills Kirumi.

    Kaede Akamatsu
Kaede Akamatsu

Ultimate Pianist

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kaede_9.png

The Ultimate Pianist. A kindhearted young woman with a passion for music... and cake. A member of Rantaro's Group. She's framed as the killer of chapter five, but is saved and revealed to be innocent. She's one of the survivors

  • Balloon Belly: Develops one in one of her free time events.
  • Big Eater: One of her dates with Rantaro had her eat 18 plates worth of food, this ends up giving her a Balloon Belly.
  • Bring My Brown Pants: Since she didn't know that Shuichi was going to save her, she soiled herself during her execution.
  • Deuteragonist: Shares this position with Shuichi, although hers is more prominent in daily life segments, being Rantaro's Love Interest and the first person he meets in the killing game.
  • Genki Girl: Gives off a near perpetual cheerful disposition, as the killing game goes on this is less prominent but still abundant.
  • Gosh Darn It to Heck!: Never dropped a stronger swear word than 'crap' or 'ass'
  • Kiddie Kid: Noted at the start by Rantaro to act younger than her actual age. Maki also calls her 'an overly enthuisiastic 10 year old in a teenager's body' in her will.
  • Nice Girl: Unfailingly outgoing and friendly to everybody surrounding her, typically expressing sadness over anger. This is Lamp Shaded by Rantaro
  • Official Couple: She and Rantaro get together shortly after the third trial.
  • Precision F-Strike: Down Played, but she does pepper her speech with fouler language after people have died. Although this doesn't get as strong as usual examples of the trope.
  • Sweet Tooth: Admits to thinking about cake more than music.

    K1-B 0
K1-B0

Ultimate Robot

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hopebot.png

  • Affectionate Nickname: Miu often call him 'Kiiboi'
  • An Arm and a Leg: Was found dead with all of his limbs cut off.
  • Artificial Intelligence: Ends up being turned into one in Chapter 4 after his physical body was killed by Maki.
  • Back from the Dead: Sort of, while Miu was able to recover his AI and store it on a computer, he is left without memories and his physical body is still uninhabitable.
  • Brain Uploading: Miu ends up uploading his AI onto a laptop after his physical body was killed in chapter 3.
  • Eye Scream: His killer stabbed him in the eye with a combat knife.
  • Nice Guy: Typically kindhearted and understanding.
  • Robot Buddy: His talent.
  • Token Non-Human: Is the only person among the students to be a robot. Thus forming a friendship with Miu in the process.

Ryoma Hoshi

    Himiko Yumeno
Himiko Yumeno

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/himiko_6.png

Scouted by Hope's Peak as the Ultimate Magician. A teenaged girl with a childlike thought pattern. She was nominated as her group's leader. She's the first victim of the third case.

    Tenko Chabashira
Tenko Chabashira

Ultimate Aikido Master

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tenko.png

The Ultimate Aikido Master, an overexpressive highschooler with a large case of misandry. The first to join Himiko's Group. She's one of the survivors.

  • Action Girl: A given with her talent
  • Butch Lesbian: Openly states that she's only interested in dating women.
  • Does Not Like Men: Tends to be rather violent and apprehensive among members of the opposite sex.
  • Heroic BSoD: She slumpts into a depression after Angie's death, speaking sparingly and being Prone to Tears. Fortunately, it doesn't last too long.
  • Important Haircut: Once she gets over Angie's death, she cuts her hair to around shoulder length.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: In spite of her violent habits and misandry, she does genuinely care about her classmates and treats women well, she also treats Rantaro rather well even though he's a man.
  • Morality Pet: In spite of her usual treatment of men, Rantaro and Gonta seem to be one for her, she frequently compliments Rantaro on his athleticism and tends to apologise when misconstruing certain events. As for Gonta, she will often act kindly to him, such as appreciating his devotion towards others and not going beyond calling him a degenerate, something she does to all men.
  • Tap on the Head: Korekiyo knocks her out with a ball before he goes to kill Kirumi.
  • Taking the Heat: Attempts to take the blame for Angie's murder.
  • Third-Person Person: Often refers to herself in this manner.

    Angie Yonaga
Angie Yonaga

Ultimate Artist

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/angie_yonaga_57.png

A somewhat outlandish artist with ties to religion. A member of Himiko's Group. She's the second killer, having murdered Kaito in order to keep her Dark Secret from being leaked.

  • Abusive Parents: Her father was apparently the island chief, and forced her to participate in Human Sacrifice rituals, threatening her with death otherwise.
  • Anti-Villain: Largely only ends up killing Kaito to prevent her secret from being leaked, which would likely result in her own death. She also only goes through with killing Kaito after she findss out that he's working with the mastermind.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Subverted, while one would initially believe that she started the student council to get a good opportunity to murder someone before anyone else, it's revealed that she only did so to protect herself and it took finding out that Kaito apparently working with the mastermind in order to go through with killing him.
  • Cloud Cuckoolander: Slightly off kilter compared to the rest of the students. As seen with her rambles about religion.
  • Eccentric Artist: While Angie has some quirks, she's ultimately harmless... That is until she commits murder.
  • Human Sacrifice: It's revealed in Chapter 2 that her island practiced these sorts of rituals, and she was forced to participate in them.
  • Precision F-Strike: Delivers one in her Motive Rant.
I WAS FORCED TO FOR FUCK'S SAKE! I DON'T CARE IF I HAD TO LEAVE THAT PLACE OUT OF SHAME, I JUST DIDN'T WANT TO DIE!
  • Screw the Rules, I Make Them!: Founded the student council to prevent murders. Ends up being the first person to kill afterward.

    Gonta Gokuhara
Gonta Gokuhara

Ultimate Entomologist

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gonta.png

A soft spoken young man who wants to be a gentleman. Scouted as the Ultimate Entomologist. He joins Himiko's Group. He's one of the survivors.

  • Book Dumb: Outside of his field in entomology, he isn't the brightest among the students.
  • Dumb Muscle: In spite of his impressive strength and knowledge about entomology, he's debatably the weakest asset to the group during Class Trials.
  • Genius Ditz: Booksmarts notwithstanding, he was invited to a highschool for elites because of his entomology experience.
  • Gentle Giant: Easily the biggest of the group, and likely doesn't have a mean bone in his body.
  • Nice Guy: Incredibly cordial and friendly to the other students.
  • The One Guy: The only male member of Himiko's Group.
  • Precision F-Strike: When he learns just how depraved Kaito is, he lets out a massive one, which shocks everyone.
  • Shrinking Violet: Downplayed, but he can be rather soft spoken.

    Miu Iruma
Miu Iruma

Ultimate Inventor

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/iruma.png

A bombastic Inventor with a big ego. She joins Himiko's Group. She's one of the survivors.

Kaito's Group

    Kaito Momota
Kaito Momota

Ultimate Astronaut

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/2_282.png

A confident and dramatic young man, scouted by Hope's Peak as the Ultimate Astronaut. Elected as his team's leader. The victim of the second chapter, or so it seems. As it turns out, he's actually the Mastermind of the Killing Game.

  • Adaptational Villainy: In canon, he's one of the most heroic members of the cast. Here, he's the Big Bad.
  • Big Bad: He's the Mastermind of the Killing Game.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: His lovable nature hides the fact he's Mastermind of the Killing Game.
  • Demoted to Extra: While he was the one of the main three characters in his original game, he's an early casualty here. Only, that was actually Tsumugi, and he's actually the mastermind.
  • Devoured by the Horde: His final fate has him being mauled to death by a pack of Monokuma at the end of his execution.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Judging by his dialogue, he had no plans for Tsumugi to die and was rather saddened by it. He also confirmed that he did love Maki and was actually engaged to her when they were in lockdown.
  • Genius Ditz: Whether or not he is that big an asset during the trials, he is the Ultimate Astronaut, completeting the test to become one at a young age.
  • The Heart: Typically the one to attempt to boost morale among the students, likely why he was elected his group's leader by Kirumi. His death was what caused Maki to start acting against the other students. Shame it was a lie.
  • Honour Before Reason: Down Played, but he honestly suggests having everyone out their secrets in order to prevent a killing, not taking into consideration that someone's secret may provoke one. One possible explanation for Angie killing him specifically could be traced back to this.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Stabbed by a katana postmortem.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Genuinely thinks that having everyone reveal their secrets will help the situation, likely assuming that the secrets they bare are mundane similar to his. This is possibly what gets Angie to target him for her murder plan.
  • Large Ham: Rather dramatic and confident among the others.
  • The Leader: Of his group.
  • Morality Pet: Seems to be the only person who Maki is willing to open up to after he stands by her after the reveal of her actual talent Getting her to genuinely want to spend time with him and join him in training. His death is ultimately what sends her off the deep end.
  • Nice Guy: Kindhearted and supportive to those around him. It's an act.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: Once he's revealed as the Mastermind, the other students note that he swears more then Miu.
  • Tap on the Head: Angie kills him by bashing his head in with a hammer.

    Kirumi Tojo
Kirumi Tojo

Ultimate Maid

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tojo.png

The Ultimate Maid. A calm and collected but none the less friendly young woman. Joins Kaito's Group. She's the first victim of the killing game.

  • Butt-Monkey: Down Played, but she does end up receiving small bouts of misfortune in Chapter 1, which is more that can be said for a lot of the other students. Some examples of this include having to be the object of Kokichi's affections, and splattering her face with icing on accident while baking.
  • Nice Girl: Stoic exterior aside, Kirumi is one of the friendlier students.
  • Official Couple: Becomes Shuichi's girlfriend in the first chapter. She's killed before anything happens within it.
  • Scullery Maid: Her talent.
    • Meido: Has elements of this.
  • Slashed Throat: How she's killed.
  • The Stoic: Seldom breaks her calm and collected demeanor.
  • Team Mom: The most traditionally motherly of the students. What with her maturity for her age and cooking skills.

    Shuichi Saihara
Shuichi Saihara

Ultimate Detective

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/saihara.png

A timid young man recruited to Hope's Peak for his skills as a detective. A member of Kaito's group. Appears to be the victim of chapter five, but it turns out that he was Faking the Dead. He's one of the surviors.

  • Beware the Nice Ones: Devoted and friendly to the people around him, just don't piss him off, as Kokichi and Korekiyo found out the hard way.
  • Cartwright Curse: Exaggerated, his relationship with Kirumi is lasts about 4 scenes and is explored for 1 before she winds up the victim of the chapter.
  • Demoted to Extra: Down Played, as while he is no longer the protagonist, he still plays an important role in the narrative, with his talent playing a big role in investigations and trials.
  • Deuteragonist: Shares this role with Kaede, with it being played up more during investigations and trials, with him also being Rantaro's main platonic friend.
  • Faking the Dead: Pulls this gambit in Chapter 5, in a bid to corner the mastermind. He succeeds.
  • Great Detective: His talent
  • Guile Hero: Not only is he a massive asset in the class trials, But in Chapter 5, he pulls off an utterly masterful gambit with Kaede as his accomplice, that ends up throwing the mastermind for a complete and utter loop, that ends up laying the ground work for the end of the killing game.
  • Idiot Hair: Ironically enough.
  • Nice Guy: Timidness aside, he's very friendly and doesn't often get angry.
  • Official Couple: Hooks up with Kirumi near the start of the game. It doesn't even last a full chapter before she's murdered.
  • Shrinking Violet: Rather shy among other people.
  • The Smart Guy: Typically one of the biggest assets to the students in the Class Trials.
  • Sole Survivor: Is the only member of Kaito's group to live through the killing game. It's also a Double Subversion as he's innitially thought to have been killed in Chapter 5, before it's revealed that he faked his death.
  • Stronger Than You Look: Part of his Faking the Dead gambit in chapter 5 required him to lift up Miu, someone taller than him and only slightly lighter, and carry her from her dorm to the Garbage Disposal room.

    Maki Harukawa
Maki Harukawa

Ultimate Child Caretaker (Ultimate Assassin)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/maki_2_0.png

A scarcely speaking girl, scouted by Hope's Peak for her skills in Childcare. Recruited by Kaito to join his group. In addition to also being the traitor amongst the group, she's the secondary killer in case 3, murdering Kiibo to assist Kokichi in his plan, and the Blackened of case 4, murdering Ryoma, presumably to prevent her status from being leaked to the other students.

  • Adaptational Villainy: Look at everything below and compare it to her canon counterpart's page.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Her attack on Rantaro after the 4th trial ends with him disarming her by cutting her hand off.
  • Asshole Victim: Traumatic past and genuine care for her mentor and students aside. It's hard to feel bad for her death. Given that she murdered 2 students, assisted in another's death, betrayed her classmates, and kidnapped one of them and blackmailed him to keep quiet about it, threatening him with death otherwise.
  • Batter Up!: Her weapon of choice during the third case.
  • The Coroner: Acts as this during the investigations makes sense, given her actual talent.
  • Friend to All Children: Her Talent. Except not really
  • Jerkass: Constantly acts cold and shuts off the other students, only cooperating with them when it benefits her. Kaito is something of an exception to the rule. It comes to a peak in Chapter 4 where any pretense of working with the students is dropped after she's exposed as Kiibo's killer and Rantaro finds out she's the traitor.
  • Karma Houdini: Due to the fact that she did the deed after Kokichi killed Himiko, she got away scott free for murdering Kiibo.
    • Karma Houdini Warranty: Ultimately doesn't get off as lucky after killing Ryoma, with her status as The Mole being outed to the surviving cast, losing a hand, and getting brutally executed.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: She killed Kiibo by hacking all of his limbs off and stabbing him in the eye. Ends up losing a hand in a struggle against Rantaro at the end of the 4th trial, followed by having it replaced with a robotic one.
  • The Mole: Is revealed as the traitor at the end of Chapter 3.
  • Professional Killer: Her actual talent.
  • The Quiet One: In the early chapters, words from her were a rarity.
  • The Stoic: Rarely breaks out of her mood of indifference.
  • Walking Spoiler: Not only is she hiding her true talent from the others, initially, but she's also The Mole, in addition to being a killer in 2 different cases.

    Kokichi Oma
Kokichi Oma

Ultimate Supreme Leader

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ouma_4.png

The Ultimate Supreme Leader. A unpleasant person with a penchant for lying. Join's Kaito's Group. He's declared Blackened of the third trial, as he killed Himiko before Maki killed Kiibo.

  • Abhorrent Admirer: Attracted to Kirumi while she seems annoyed by him.
  • Abusive Parents: Implied with his father.
  • Asshole Victim: Played With, on one hand he did kill Himiko and blackmail Maki into killing Kiibo. But he did give some aid to Rantaro in finding the traitor before he's executed. In addition to wanting to help his underlings with the money from the motive.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Very often acts to get a rise out of people and is generally immature and aggressive. Then comes Chapter 3, where he blackmails Maki into assisting in a murder plan he constructs, where he successfully disposes of Miu's cameras and pulls of a murder that come's very close to being successful.
  • Cartwright Curse: All 3 of the people he develops romantic interest towards end up the victims of their respective chapters.
    • Although this is subverted somewhat when it's revealed that he was the person who killed Himiko.
  • Depraved Bisexual: The fic plays up his Ambiguously Bi moments to have him openly interested in both guys and girls. In addition to this, he's also more of a prick than in canon.
  • Jerkass: Very eager to pull stunts that often get people angry and is generally rude to the other students, often mouthing them off and casually attaching himself to other people when they know that he annoys them.
  • See You in Hell: Before he get's executed, he tells Maki he'll be saving a seat for her in Hell.
  • Sir Swears Alot: Has one of the foulest mouths among the students when sufficiently angry.

Others

Monokuma
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/monokuma_illustration.png

  • Ax-Crazy: His desire for bloodshed and brutal executions make it clear that he is COMPLETELY INSANE
  • Big Bad: The one responsible for the student's imprisonment.
  • Evil Laugh: "Upupu"
  • Jerkass: To put it mildly.
  • Pet the Dog: He actually gives the surviving students tailored swimsuits.

    The Headmaster
Jin Kirigiri

Headmaster of Hope's Peak

The headmaster of the academy. executed at the end of the prologue.

    The 16th Student
Tsumugi Shirogane

Ultimate Cosplayer

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tsumigi_6.png
The missing student from the class and a master seamstress and cosplayer. They're the true victim of chapter two, having been cosplaying as Kaito and killed once Angie learned they were working for the Mastermind.
  • Adaptational Gender Identity: Nonbinary here.
  • The Dragon: To Kaito
  • Master of Disguise: To the point where they were able to past themself off as the male Kaito.
  • Spot the Imposter: In order to perfectly disguise themself as someone, they require contacts to change their eye color, otherwise their blue eyes will remain. This key detail is used in the final Class Trial to expose that all the pictures they received from Monokuma don't actually show themselves in the photo, but Tsumugi disgused as them, with the only detail wrong being their blue eyes.
