    The Protagonist
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/eugene_8.jpg
The protagonist of the story; a young man struck with mutism.
  • All Deaths Final: The "Con Artist" (highest) difficulty yields this; once the protagonist dies, the game ends. Can also happen if you lose a card game to Death and allow them to take your soul; in both instances, your save game is permanently deleted.
  • Art Reflects Personality: The sketches accompanying his journal entries.
  • Card Sharp: Over time, the protagonist goes from simply being an assistant to the Comte to a master cheater in his own right.
  • Character Development: Goes from being a wineboy at a tavern to rubbing shoulders with aristocracy. In a more understated manner, his literacy skills greatly improve over the course of the game, as seen in his journal entries.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The hand mirror that the Baronnesse gives to him in chapter one makes a reappearance in chapter three, whenever the protagonist has to dress as a lady; he uses it to peek at his opponent's cards. Similarly, the cloth the protagonist uses to wipe tables in chapter one comes in extremely handy when facing Colonel Gabriel in chapter three; the protagonist has to slap him with it to initiate the duel, or else he will get shot on the spot.
  • Chekhov's Skill: The coin-flip trick Jean-Baptiste teaches him saves his life in his second encounter with Colonel Gabriel.
  • Chess with Death: Should the protagonist die at any point, he's sent to Limbo to talk to Death and win his way back to the world above by playing a card game.
  • Costume Evolution: His outfits become fancier the further up the social ladder he climbs.
  • Deadpan Snarker: During one of the times you can visit Limbo, Death will ask for his "time" in order to return back to the living. The protagonist then gives Death your device's current time, whatever it is set to. Doubles as Fourth-Wall Observer.
  • Death Is a Slap on the Wrist: Can happen many times, depending on how often he gets caught-out cheating. Either winning a quick card game against Death or simply paying-up will return the protagonist to the real world. Averted in the "Con Artist" difficulty.
  • Defeat Means Menial Labor: One of the protagonist's fates at the end; he's sent to Guyana with the Comte and Erdnase, and it takes fifteen years for him to be released and sent home.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Briefly towards the Comte after he abandons him before his duel with MacGregor.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: The Comte abandons him twice, the second time to fatal results.
  • Even the Guys Want Him: Sérannes takes a fancy to him while disguised as a noble lady.
  • Family Eye Resemblance: Julie tells him he has Sophie's eyes, briefly raising the possibility that he's the King's son.
  • Fever Dream Episode: After getting stabbed by MacGregor, the protagonist has a dream wherein he's in Sophie's bed, and he meets a garbled combination of the Comte, Erdnase, and Louis XV.
  • Glove Slap: Can do this to MacGregor, followed swiftly by a Ten Paces and Turn duel.
  • Heroes Love Dogs: At the start of the game, the protagonist can pet the dog. He also has a dog when he owns the tavern in the epilogue - which he can also pet.
  • Heroic Mime: He communicates via facial expressions and hand gestures.
  • I Have Many Names: He's given the name "Eugene" by the Comte in chapter one. He also goes by "Madame de Saint-Ferlain" and "Marquese of Passegrain" ("Graciella" in both instances) when disguised with the Comte, and "Gwendolyn" when disguised with Julie.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Gontrand will stab the protagonist after three rounds of three-card Monte if you lose all of your money and have to go to the Barn to recoup your losses. The Lady (of the Barn and Theatre trio) will take the General's sabre and behead the protagonist if he's caught cheating against them. This also happens after the fake duel with MacGregor.
  • Lady Ella: One of the names he uses when in disguise is "Graciella".
  • Made of Iron: Survives being shot at in the duel with Colonel Gabriel (but only if you choose to recoil instead of slapping him with a glove), as well as being stabbed numerous times by different characters.
  • Meaningful Name: "Eugene" comes from the Greek "well-born", which ties into him being led around as the potential son and heir to King Louis XV. His chosen surname, "le Pallois", could be a reference to his hometown, Pau, in which its people are known as "Palois" in French.
  • The Need for Mead: He opens up Ms.Porterhouse's tavern again in all endings, and in the epilogue he's shown to still be running it.
  • Never Given a Name: He doesn't have a name until the Comte chooses "Eugene" for him in chapter one. Eugene takes this one step further in the epilogue by giving himself the surname "le Pallois".
  • Never Learned to Read: Or write properly, until the Comte came into his life. Over the course of the game, his journal entries improve significantly.
  • Off with His Head!: The Lady (of the Barn and Theatre trio) will take the General's sabre and state she'll behead both him and the Comte if they're caught cheating.
  • Professional Gambler: Through the Comte's tutelage, he manages to become a renowned-enough gambler to cheat his way into high society.
  • Rags to Riches: He goes from a wineboy at a countryside tavern to a cardsharp hobnobbing with aristocrats.
  • Really Royalty Reveal: Through the second half of the game, he is played-up as the King's missing son. Ultimately averted as he's revealed to have been an orphan picked and raised by Ms. Porterhouse on Erdnase's instructions, after the King's real son was stillborn. Doubles with Lost Orphaned Royalty, but equally averted.
  • Resurrection Revenge: Manages to come back from being betrayed by the Comte and stabbed by MacGregor, immediately after which he plans to get his own back on the former.
  • Secret-Keeper: To Ireneo, after he finds out he and the Baronnesse are one and the same.
  • Significant Birth Date: Potentially; this post from the developers gives his birthday as June 30th, 1723. Could also be a Significant Reference Date.
  • Silent Snarker: Some of his replies show shades of this, using his face expressions to communicate his snark.
  • The Speechless: Suffers mutism, preventing him from communicating conventionally.
  • Suddenly Speaking: The first time the protagonist dies, he's pleasantly surprised that he can talk in Limbo. Death explains that it's their kingdom, and they make the rules.
  • Underhanded Hero: Comes with the territory. He helps the Comte win card games by utilizing several cheating methods, such as peeking at cards when serving wine or stacking decks in the Comte's favour.
  • "Where Are They Now?" Epilogue: Doubles as a Playable Epilogue; the protagonist is shown to still be running Ms. Porterhouse's tavern nearly fifty years after the game's events, and any money he donated to the Camp is being used to help the French Revolution.
  • Wholesome Crossdresser: Has to dress as a noble lady a few times in order to enter places otherwise off-limits.

    The Comte de Saint Germain
A nobleman who takes the protagonist under his wing and teaches him many things.
  • The Atoner: He really does regret turning tail on the protagonist twice, and right before the card game with King Louis XV, he pleads with the protagonist to move back to Pau and live a simple life, if he's allowed to leave Versailles a free man.
  • Card Sharp: He's the protagonist's primary educator in various card tricks.
  • Defeat Means Menial Labor: One of the Comte's fates at the end; he's sent to Guyana with the protagonist and Erdnase, but passes away soon after arriving.
  • Fake Aristocrat: The Comte himself says he was someone high-up in Versailles, but after being thrown out, most nobles who know him don't think too highly of him. In fact, it was the Comte's exile from Versailles that allowed Erdnase to engineer his revenge, using the Comte to elevate him back into high society.
  • Fisticuff-Provoking Comment: Is on the receiving end of one of these, courtesy of Sérannes.
  • Fourth-Wall Observer: During his rant in one of the endings, the Comte will specifically announce the amount of time he spent teaching the protagonist all of the tricks that he did. Could possbly overlap with Breaking the Fourth Wall.
  • Historical Domain Character: The real life Comte de Saint Germain, no less.
  • Off with His Head!: One of the Comte's ultimate fates at the end of the game. Additionally, The Lady (of the Barn and Theatre trio) will take the General's sabre and state she'll behead both him and the protagonist if they're caught cheating.
  • Lovable Rogue: He's a con-artist and a cheat, but he donates much of his winnings to the sick and needy among the Romani who taught him his skills, and serves as The Mentor to the protagonist beyond what's needed for their scams.
  • The Mentor: He takes the protagonist under his wing and educates him in the ways of a professional gambler. He also teaches him how to write and presumably read, as well as all about high society.
  • Secret-Keeper: He knows a great deal of secrets about the nobility of France, even up to King Louis XV.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Delivers one to the protagonist, or one of two different speeches to the King, depending on whom the protagonist dealt the aces to in the final game, or if he flubbed the deal.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: The one good ending for the Comte allows him to live and visit the protagonist in Pau frequently over the years... But he still dies in a duel in Paris.
