Nobility

    Colonel Gabriel
The man who starts the whole adventure off after being cheated in a card game.
  • Accidental Murder: Intended to shoot and kill the Comte, but ended-up shooting Ms. Porterhouse instead.
  • Frame-Up: Shoots himself in the foot after his second encounter with the protagonist, to make it look like he shot him during their duel.

    Baronnesse de Beauregard
A lady friend of the Comte.
  • Master of Disguise: She is really Ireneo Funes, who is really S.W. Erdnase.
  • Spanner in the Works: Helps the protagonist before the final game by slipping a fifth ace into the deck after the Comte allows her to cut the deck. In doing this, she basically allows the protagonist to choose who ends up where in which of the many endings.

    Henri d'Aramitz
A former musketeer, living out his days in a hospice in Bergerac.

    Deborah Churchill (Unmarked spoilers!)
Sophie d'Aubigny's twin sister, and current caretaker of Henri d'Aramitz.
  • Classified Information: She hopes to get as much information from Henri as she can on her sister, before the Comte arrives with the protagonist in tow.
  • The Infiltration: Poses as Henri's niece in order to get him to give her the information she's looking for.
  • Relationship Reveal: A very brief moment shows she's in one with Chevalier de Saint-Georges.

    Julie d'Aubigny
Matriarch of the D'Aubigny family.

    Casanova
A good friend of Madame de Pompadour.
  • Defeat Means Respect: Though he's friends with the Comte anyway, it's only by besting Casanova in a card game that gains his respect and promise to get them an audience with Madame de Pompadour.
  • Historical Domain Character: Named after, and presumably based upon, the real-life Casanova.

    Madame de Pompadour
King Louis XV's favourite in the court of Versailles.

    William MacGregor
A man who holds a large grudge against the protagonist.
  • Accidental Public Confession: Becomes so enraged with the protagonist cheating while playing against King Louis XV, that he basically admits to having poisoned Sophie during his outburst.
  • The Dragon: To King Louis XV.
  • Evil Chancellor: Is this to King Louis XV.
  • Frame-Up: Claimed that Erdnase murdered Sophie, when in fact he poisoned the tea that was only supposed to make her fall asleep.
  • Hidden Backup Prince: Fears this, and hopes to avert it by stopping the Comte taking the protagonist to Versailles - by any means necessary.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Framed Erdnase for Sophie's murder, only to have Erdnase return and get him to out himself in front of the King twenty years later.
  • I Surrender, Suckers: Pulls this on the protagonist after their duel, fatally wounding him immediately thereafter.
  • The Man Behind the Man: He and Erdnase share this towards Louis XV, with both of them working for other nobility behind his back.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: What he essentially does after stabbing the protagonist after their fake duel. He allows the hero to be saved by Julie, who helps set-up his revenge against the Comte - which also allows the protagonist to get to Versailles and inadvertently causes MacGregor to have his rant when he complains the Comte is cheating against Louis XV. All because he was scared the protagonist would return and try and claim the throne.
  • Secret-Keeper: To King Louis XV; the reason he's after the protagonist is to stop him from potentially claiming the throne as the King's long-lost son, and to avoid the news that the King had a son by a secret wife from leaking to the public.
  • The Starscream: If all of the aces are dealt to Erdnase in the final game, King Louis XV theorises MacGregor might have been working with a cabal under his brother's orders to poison Sophie, as his brother saw her as a threat.

    S.W. Erdnase
One of the King's former inner circle.
  • Accidental Murder: He only meant to slip Sophie a sleep-inducing tea, but thanks to MacGregor's machinations, he ended-up poisoning her and killing her.
  • Ambiguous Gender: Erdnase is referred to as a "thief of dubious gender" by Louis XV near the end of the game.
  • Attractive Bent-Gender: As Baronnesse de Beauregard; the disguise is good enough to fool even the Comte.
  • The Chessmaster: He came-up with the idea to have Ms. Porterhouse adopt a mute orphan -the protagonist- as part of his long-planned revenge against MacGregor. He also manipulated the Comte and Eugene with various disguises in order to get back to Versailles.
  • Defeat Means Menial Labor: One of his fates at the end; he's sent to Guyana with the Comte and the protagonist, but he escapes into the jungle, never to be seen again.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Returns to Versailles twenty years later to exact his revenge on MacGregor.
  • False Friend: As Ireneo to the protagonist, as the Baronnesse to the Comte, and to them both in order to get closer to getting revenge on MacGregor.
  • Gamebreaker: He teaches the aptly-named Erdnase Shuffle, which allows the protagonist total control over the game of cards he's playing. However, the technique is only used against King Louis XV.
  • Gory Discretion Shot: He's seen perfectly capable of running after MacGregor frames him for Sophie's murder then limping in the next scene. Presumably Henri ran after him and gave him a fatal leg injury.
  • Handicapped Badass: Not even losing a leg stops him from leading the protagonist and the Comte all the way to the King's card table in Versailles.
  • Hiding the Handicap: As Baronnesse de Beauregard, he wears a large dress and uses a walking stick to hide the fact he's missing a leg.
  • Historical Domain Character: Named after the author and magician, S.W. Erdnase.
  • I Have Many Names: He also goes by Ireneo Funes, Baronnesse de Beauregard, the King of Thieves, and the Mother Superior at Sophie's bedside.
  • Long Game: He hides for twenty years while planning his revenge.
  • The Man Behind the Man: He and MacGregor share this towards Louis XV, with both of them working for other nobility behind his back. He's also this to the Comte, having engineered both his rise and fall from the high society of Versailles.
  • Master of Disguise: He is Ireneo Funes, Baronnesse de Beauregard, the King of Thieves, and a Mother Superior.
  • Meaningful Name: S.W. Erdnase was the pseudonym of a magician who authored a book detailing sleight of hand, cheating, and legerdemain with playing cards. Erdnase in the game is an expert at cards, who teaches the protagonist some of the final tricks in the game.
  • My Greatest Failure: States that having Sophie drink the poisoned tea is a nightmare he's relived every night, for the past twenty years.
  • Noble Fugitive: He spent twenty years in hiding after MacGregor accused him of poisoning Sophie d'Aubigny.
  • Oh, Crap!: Has a very subtle one when Louis XV announces that Sophie isn't breathing, as Erdnase had only meant to make her fall asleep with the tea he gave her; instead, he unwittingly poisoned and killed her.
  • Seadog Peg Leg: As the King of Thieves.

    Sophie d'Aubigny (Unmarked spoilers!)
King Louis XV's secret wife, who passed away shortly after giving birth to his son.
  • Death by Childbirth: Slightly averted; Sophie had just given birth to a stillborn child, and in her grief and worry that the King would toss her aside for not providing an heir, drank the poisoned tea Erdnase gave to her, presumably without thinking much about it.
  • Get Thee to a Nunnery: Almost; Erdnase's plan had been to give her sleep-inducing tea, then have her carried away and sent to a convent. Instead, he inadvertently murdered her.
  • Unreveal Angle: In the few times we see her, her hand covers her face as she's weeping in bed.

    King Louis XV
The King of France.
  • Final Boss: Though he does play his matches with other characters at the table.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: About the fact his son by Sophie was stillborn, and the fact she was poisoned by MacGregor, right until the end of the game.
