A girl who watches over Hazama.

  • A-Cup Angst: When Let tells Io that eating carrots will make her bustier, Rock swallows an entire piece. And she strangles Ron for calling her flat-chested during their "ventriloquist act".
  • Emotionless Girl: Has difficulty recognizing what "fun" is, and utterly confused why she has tears leaking from her eyes after seeing her previous life. She's not quite content with this, however.
  • Gender-Blender Name: Here, B★RS is called "Rock". She is also the legendary "Black Star".
  • Good Is Not Nice: She knows what her mission is, and she offers no consolation to Leto, who just realized that he's a dead guy all along. She becomes nice through Character Development, to the point that she consoles a fading Dead by acting as her fiance.
  • Not So Above It All: When Kaede's surroundings take the form of a shopping mall, Rock immediately starts putting together an ensemble for the planned Love Confession to Dead.
  • Shinigami: Her role is fairly close to one, in that she makes sure souls aren't trapped in Hazama.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: She's easily the most emotive B★RS, though she has an air of stoicism to her.
  • Trauma Button: Flips out when she hears the word "Disappear". The reason? Some bullies burnt her shoulder and leg with cigarettes while chanted the word in her Dark and Troubled Past, only starting to appear as flashes of memories after being in contact with a corrupted soul who died in fire. Before that, she has no reason other than instinct why she hates the word.
  • You Are Number 6: It's revealed that she isn't the only Black Shooter. To be exact, she's number 01451.

    Ron

Ron

A sort of snake-like being, he forms a sort of partnership as a sort of physical manifestation of Rock's powers.

  • BFG: He can take the form of the iconic cannon of the franchise.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Has a habit of griping to himself about whatever situation at hand or making mocking comments at others, be it Rock or the rest of the cast. Ron is much, much nicer than his fellow weapon-companion Nico, however.
  • Empathic Weapon: He turns into both Rock★Cannon and Black Blade, but only one form at a time.
  • Equippable Ally: He is Rock's partner and weaponry.
  • Shapeshifter Default Form: His regular form is of a snake.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Rock. Even though he has a chance to change his partner, he keeps on following her even up to her Hazama-destroying Rage Against the Mentor quest.

    Dead

Dead Master

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/brs_insoul_dead_3.jpg

A mysterious, ominous person who approaches Rock at the end of the first chapter.

  • Cute and Psycho: Dead Master looks adorable, but she eats souls.
  • Despair Event Horizon: After Ram reveals her that it's impossible for her to be brought back to life and lied to her because she found her struggle amusing. She becomes a rampaging lost soul until Rock puts her out of her misery.
  • Extreme Omnivore: Her soul-devouring tendencies aside, she also ate her teddy bear in her sleep and proceed to eat Rock's hair next. And people are asking why Rock's pig-tails are in an uneven length... After dying, Rock takes up this trait and eats Dead's soul to keep her memory from being burnt off.
  • Happily Married: When she was alive she was married to a man and they had a very stable and loving relationship. Not only he was devastated when she died in a car accident, she's willing to become a reaper and eat souls in order to return to his side.
  • Incompatible Orientation: The reason she rebuffs Kaede's advances. Not only Dead isn't interested, she's straight.
  • Les Yay: Pretty much explicitly in love/lust with Rock. She invoked it as she needs Rock's soul to be devoured, she tries to provoke some reaction.
  • Let Them Die Happy: Rock lets Dead seeing her as her husband, spending her last seconds in embrace of her beloved.
  • Love Makes You Evil: Her motivation for eating souls is to be strong enough to be revived and reunited with her husband.
  • Unwitting Pawn: To Ram.
  • You Are Number 6: Her codename is Black Shooter #012370
  • Your Soul Is Mine!: And she literally eats them.

    Ram

Ram

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/brs_insoul_ram.jpg

A girl who seems to be very interested with Rock's development of character.

  • All of the Other Reindeer: When she was alive she was a defective firefly.
  • Animal Motifs: She's associated with sheep; her design (specifically the horns) and name comes from the Rambouillet sheep, a type of breed from the genus Ovis. Ironically when she was alive she was a firefly.
  • Big Bad: The true villain behind everything and the last enemy Rock and Ron must face.
  • Death Equals Redemption: After beating her, Rock reincarnates Ram into a firefly that can glow, and thus can make friends with others. Ram's final words before reincarnating are to thank Rock.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: When she was alive, she was a firefly who did not glow like the others. It's implied her resentment it's what caused her to be so petty and sadistic, wanting to see others suffer for the "pain" she went through when she was alive.
  • Evil Is Petty: When she was alive she was a defective firefly that couldn't glow like the others. So she wants to make sure everyone in the underworld stays miserable out of spite that she couldn't be happy in her lifetime.
  • I Lied: She promised Dead that she could return to her marriage after eating enough souls, and tells her the truth in her final battle.
  • Light Is Not Good: She is primarily white in color, compared to the rest of the cast's black. She also used to be a firefly in her former life. And then she is revealed to actually be the Big Bad.
  • Power of the Void: Besides her charkram, Ram can summon forth small black orbs to fight. Once she unleashes them, they hover in place for a moment and then detonate in a giant blast, consuming whatever is nearby and leaving a sphere-like outline behind. She eventually starts trying to erase away the afterlife this way in a frenzy as she and Rock duel.
  • Rings of Death: She uses a huge chakram with a gear-like appearance as her main weapon. It can be slashed up-close like a blade or hurled from afar like a boomerang.
  • You Are Number 6: Her codename is Black Shooter #1, the first reaper created.

Others

Jack Ollie

A serial killer that killed 87 people before he was captured and executed. Upon death, he became a vengeful ghost and trapped his victims in a timeloop in order to kill them again and again.
  • Berserk Button: He's angry that his victims always forget him once they've been brought back to life and part of why he continues to kill them in the timeloop is so that they could remember him.

However after Io consoles him and says she was still happy nonetheless, Leto admits he had fun too before disappearing.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Both have white-blonde hair and they're very kind people.
  • Forgotten Fallen Friend: Rock doesn't seem to care much about their situation and is more focused in capturing Jack Olie. While this might be because she's more aloof in the earlier chapters, in the final chapter she doesn't even bother to remember them when she tells Ram about the feelings of the ghosts she met during her journey.
  • Lying to Protect Your Feelings: Io was aware that she and Leto were dead and trapped in a timeloop, but did not care and continued to enjoy the little happiness she had for Leto's sake.

  • Alas, Poor Villain: Rock sympathizes with her, as both were bullied when they were alive.

Upon death, she trapped her mother's soul in a timeloop because she wants her mother to become kind again like in the old times before her father died.

  • Alas, Poor Villain: She was a vengeful ghost that trapped her mother in a timeloop, but she doesn't have bad intentions. Ron is quick to point she's still selfish for trapping the mother against her will though.

  • Monster of the Week: Of Chapter 7.
  • Trans Equals Gay: The girl she liked wasn't interested in girls, so Kaede believes that if she were a guy, they could be together. However Dead says gender wasn't the problem, Kaede's love was onesided.
  • Unkempt Beauty: Has messy, frizzy hair and wears unflattering clothes and thick glasses. This didn't stop her from having admirers though.
