Premiering on April 6, 2003 on TV Tokyo, Nyo! acts as a Continuity Reboot for the franchise. While there are still some familiar elements, the show is more aimed at children as opposed to the franchise's usual otaku demographic with no references to the franchise's roots whatsoever. Elements from the previous series, Panyo Panyo, were also used in order to expand the backstories of Dejiko, Gema, and Puchiko.

Dejiko is still the princess of Planet Di Gi Charat who is heading for Earth with her friends Puchiko and Gema, however, she is specifically going to learn how to train to be a better princess. She ends up crash-landing on the planet, and now stranded takes refuge with the Omocha brothers in their toy store, while Puchiko goes to live with a married couple who run a bakery. While it may be a different series, Dejiko still gets into her usual antics; getting into conflict with her rival Rabi~en~Rose, evading the schemes of the Black Gema Gema Gang, and doing her best to become famous.

Nyo! followed a two shorts format with each one being roughly around 11 minutes, and the show would ultimately have 104 episodes in total making it the longest Di Gi Charat anime by a wide margin.

Nyo! was one of Bandai Entertainment's former licenses and the show received a dub by Ocean Media's non-union studio, Blue Water Studios, however said dub would be Cut Short note  with only 72 of the 104 episodes dubbed.

The series provides examples of the following tropes, FT for short:

  • Abled in the Adaptation: It's very minor, but unlike Takeshi, John does not wear glasses.
  • Accidental Misnaming: Dejiko's mother gets lost in the shopping district because she was asking for the Omochi siblings rather than Omocha.
  • Adaptational Dye-Job: Rabi~en~Rose's father and mother had blond and red hair respectively in the original series, here it is gray and pink respectively.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance:
    • Kiyoshi and Yasushi appear in the first episode of the series, and before Rabi~en~Rose as well. Their counterparts in the original series did not debut until Episodes 3 and 5 respectively.
    • Rod P. debuts before the Black Gema Gema Gang, the quartet was around before the original special that he debuted in.
    • Rik, Ky, and Coo debut alongside Piyoko. The trio appeared a special or two after Piyoko was first introduced.
  • Adaptational Heroism: Rabi~en~Rose’s parents are much better to her in Nyo! and are actually around, in fact, they're actually a little overbearing if anything.
  • Adaptational Late Appearance:
    • Mr. Manager, along with Gamers and Akihabara, don't appear until roughly 30 episodes into the series. They were all around since Episode 1 in the original series.
    • Rod Young doesn't wear his Dejiko-inspired outfit until his second appearance.
  • Adapted Out: The Deji-Devil does not show up in this series, being the only major Panyo Panyo character not to appear.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul:
    • In the original series, Minigawa had a crush on Rabi~en~Rose that was very unrequited. Here, Rabi~en~Rose is actually the one who has a crush on Kiyoshi, and it's implied he returns those feelings.
    • Dejiko and Gema live with Kiyoshi and Yasushi, and thus interact regularly with them. In the original series, Minagawa and Kimura only ever really interacted with Rabi~en~Rose and Puchiko respectively.
    • John and Paul are shown to be good friends with Yasushi, whereas the characters that the three were based on really had no connection in the original series.
  • And Knowing Is Half the Battle: Played for Laughs. Episode 22 ends with a special PSA from Rabi~en~Rose about the importance of eating your vegetables. As she’s talking, Amaenbou can be seen in the background being grossed out by eating a cucumber, causing her to angrily tell him to eat it.
  • Ascended Extra:
    • Akari Usada ends up becoming a much more recurring character near the end of the series, especially due to her becoming one of Dejiko's teachers at the Princess School.
    • Aqua and Yuurei also begin appearing more frequently due to being Dejiko's classmates at the school.
  • Back for the Finale: The end credits of the final episode feature a party that in addition to having the mains, also has most of the major supporting cast appear as well.
  • Banister Slide: The third opening has Dejiko slide down a banister and hit Usada once she reaches the bottom.
  • Beach Episode: The episodes that introduce Aqua primarily take place at the beach.
  • Bizarro Universe: Episode 71 has Usada and Akari fall into a place called the "Anti Lucky Shopping District" where everything is reversed. Puchiko is giant, Dejiko is unable to fire Eye Beams, Gema is a cube, and the Black Gema Gema Gang are rich just to name a few.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: John and Paul will sometimes talk to the audience about the episode that just played, at one point they state that they have nothing to say about an episode as they were not in it.
  • Broad Strokes: The series plays a bit loose with how Panyo Panyo happened. Gema states that Dejiko and Puchiko should know who Rinna and Meek are since they have met and were friends. However, Piyoko is said to have only ever interacted with Dejiko once before, by trying to kidnap her, and no mention is ever made of the Deji-Devil.
  • Bullet Seed: In Episode 25, Dejiko and Gema get into a fight and Gema fights by spitting watermelon seeds at her.
  • Butt-Monkey:
    • As per usual, Gema and Rabi~en~Rose are often on the receiving end of Dejiko's shenanigans.
    • Yasushi regularly has his inventions blow up in his face and is often treated like an idiot by the rest of the cast.
  • By the Lights of Their Eyes: When the gang arrives at Yuurei’s room, only their eyes are visible due to it being so dark. Dejiko grumbles about how someone had better turn on a light or else the scene might get cut from the episode.
  • Celebrity Impersonator: Chibi Usada is used to fill in for Akari Usada during events when the latter is unavailable. While she sounds like Akari, she looks nothing like her and thus tends to be kept out of view from the public.
  • Chain of Deals: Episode 65 has Dejiko, inspired by the story of the straw millionaire, begin trading items in an effort to become rich. She does eventually hit the jackpot by getting a coupon for a free steak dinner. However, a fight between her, Gema, and Piyoko results in her frying the ticket with her eye beams on accident.
  • Christmas Episode: Episodes 75 and 76 take place during Christmas.
  • Cinderella Plot: Episode 84 has Yasushi invent a device that turns Gema into a beautiful Prince, however, the transformation is not permanent. While at the Princess School, Gema realizes too late the transformation is wearing off, leaving behind a glass slipper. However, a monster ends up eating it, causing the girls to stop caring about finding him.
  • Comically Small Bribe: The spooky store owner offers Dejiko a pumpkin-flavored lollipop to make a delivery for him in Episode 35.
  • Continuity Reboot: Takes place within an entirely different continuity than the original series.
  • Cordon Bleugh Chef: Gema’s cooking creates some kind of weird blob monster. According to Kiyoshi, it tastes very good once you get past the weird look.
  • Cut Short: As mentioned above, the English dub of the series only made it to Episode 72.
  • A Day in the Limelight:
    • Episode 46 focuses mainly on Puchiko, with Dejiko only making a short appearance near the beginning. Notably, it's one of the few episodes to have a title that ends with nyu rather than nyo.
    • Episode 71 stars Hikaru and Akari and is another episode that does not end with nyo.
  • Demoted to Extra:
    • Gamers, and the rest of Akihabara for that matter, has nowhere near the prominence it did in the original series with it being the focus of only a handful of episodes.
    • Rinna and Meek have a much smaller role in this series compared to Panyo Panyo, with both making rather sporadic appearances. They do however become much more prominent when Dejiko begins going to princess school.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Episode 16 has Yasushi invent goggles to replicate Dejiko’s eye beams. Gema then tries to rally a group to fire the beams back at Dejiko to get payback for all the times she’s blasted them. Unfortunately Yasushi didn’t tell them that the laser was fake, and once Dejiko realizes she isn’t happy and blasts them all.
  • Down the Rabbit Hole: Episode 71 has Hikaru and Akari fall into a hole and get transported to the Anti-Lucky Cat Shopping District where everything is reversed. While there, the two both drink a potion that causes them to grow in size as well.
  • Dub Name Change: Amaenbou became "Mommy's Baby" in the English dub of Nyo!, a direct translation of his name.
  • Early-Bird Cameo:
    • Also acting as a slight Chekhov's Gag, Meek makes a short non-speaking appearance in Episode 35, sailing out to sea. She is introduced properly in Episode 47, having been eaten by a giant fish while out on her travels.
    • Impostors dressed like the Black Gema Gema Gang appear in the second opening. The Gang itself isn't properly introduced until Episode 53.
  • Electric Jellyfish: Gema falls in love with a jellyfish, and when he grabs one of her tentacles, it's clear that he's being shocked.
  • Enter Stage Window: Dejiko, Puchiko, and Gema enter Usada's room, which is on the second floor, through her window.
  • Expy: Several characters from the original series were repurposed, while still filling a similar role.
    • Minagawa became Kiyoshi and roughly stayed the same, being a young boy who goes to the same school as Rabi~en~Rose.
    • Kimura became a toy designer named Yasushi, and also the older brother of Kiyoshi. He still retains his obsession with Puchiko however.
    • Takeshi and Yoshimi became a pair of musicians named John and Paul. While still portrayed as fanboys, they are not exclusively Dejiko fanboys and instead gush over most things cute.
  • Flat-Earth Atheist: The Bathhouse owner refuses to believe that Dejiko is from space, even when she shows off things like her laser eye beams.
  • Forgetful Jones: Dejiko and Puchiko have no memory of ever meeting Rinna or Meek.
  • Forgotten First Meeting: Dejiko and Puchiko do not remember being friends with Rinna or Meek as kids.
  • Garage Sale: Episode 42 has Dejiko host a rummage sale for all of Yasushi's old toys, rather unsuccessfully.
    • Oinko and Oinkette, two schoolchildren, can't afford anything.
    • Dejiko tries to take advantage of John and Paul's obsession with toys, unfortunately, they already own everything there that's for sale.
    • Eventually she manages to attract a crowd, only for them to decry everything for sale as worthless junk.
    • Finally a spaceman comes and buys the whole lot. Only for it to be revealed that it was Yasushi in disguise at the end of the episode much to the displeasure of Dejiko.
  • Golden Super Mode: Episode 64 has Dejiko get hit by the magical white-feathered arrow which causes her to become a literal glimmering person with a golden coloring, including a gold aura around her.
  • Gone Horribly Right: In episode 94, the gang gives Rinna tea to help her stay awake. Unfortunately, she ends up keeping them awake with her antics.
  • Here We Go Again!: Episode 48 ends with Meek get swallowed by another giant fish and it rampaging through the shopping district. When Dejiko grumbles about it happening again, Meek tells her to shut it.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: Gramps and Gran are married and Gramps is much taller than Gran, being roughly twice her height.
  • Human Snowball: In episode 94, Rinna falls asleep while skiing and ends up creating a giant snowball. She manages to stay on top using some fancy handiwork. The same cannot be said for Usada who ends up getting stuck in it.
  • I Am Not Weasel: Episode 38 has Gema fall in love with a Jellyfish that he names “Ms. Seaweed”. He later finds what he thinks is her dried-up body on the beach, when in actuality it’s a squid. The rest of the cast chooses not to correct him, mainly because they want to leave the beach.
  • Identical Stranger: Episode 76 has Dejiko helping Yasushi deliver presents, who insists he's Santa Claus. The end of the episode reveals that was the actual Santa Claus and that Yasushi had been asleep in his workroom for the past day leaving Dejiko shocked.
  • Identical Twin ID Tag: The pig twins Oinko and Oinkette are differentiated by their dress color.
  • Idiosyncratic Episode Naming: Nearly every episode title ends with Dejiko’s Verbal Tic of -nyo, with a few having Puchiko’s -nyu instead.
  • Insomnia Episode: Episode 94 has the girls at the princess school being tired of Rinna always falling asleep and unintentionally causing trouble. They decide to give her some tea to help keep her awake, but it has the side-effect of causing her to stay awake all night and keep them all up.
  • Let's Split Up, Gang!: Dejiko attempts to avert this in Episode 35, pointing out to Rabi that if she leaves the group something bad might happen to her.
  • Living Crashpad: Episode 4 has Dejiko break her fall by landing on John and Paul, who don't seem to mind. What offends them however is her complaining about having such a disgusting crashpad.
  • Miniature Senior Citizens: Gran and Gramps are both rather short, although Gramps is the taller of the two. Gran is shorter than Dejiko and Gramps is barely taller than Kiyoshi, a middle school student.
  • Mistaken for Santa: Inverted. Dejiko needs to help Santa, who she is convinced is just her inventor friend Yasushi in a Paper-Thin Disguise, deliver presents around the Lucky Cat Shopping District. The end of the episode reveals that Yasushi had been asleep in his own workshop for the past few days as he had been busy designing and building toys, causing Dejiko to realize that she had been helping the real deal.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • One of the first things Rabi~en~Rose does after meeting, and being annoyed by, Dejiko is kicking her away into a car. Luckily for Dejiko, rather than falling into a river and nearly getting eaten by a giant koi she instead bounces off the car and lands on John and Paul.
    • Takeshi and Yoshimi, the characters from the original series that John and Paul are based on, did perform music in the third episode of the Natsuyasumi Special, however they weren’t very good.
    • When in Akihabara specifically, all the people look like fingers. This is how every background character was drawn in the original series.
    • Ky is stated to drink from a mug that has "Mama" written on it. In the Christmas Special that took place within the same continuity as the original series, Ky was said to be like the mother of the Black Gema Gema Gang, with Rik and Coo being the father and brother respectively.
    • Episode 58 features several similar beats to Episode 8 from the original series. It deals with Puchiko being upset that she can not use the laser eye. She goes to train, and the area she goes to looks exactly like the one from the original, where someone passing by offers to help her, Abarenbou rather than Murataku. In the end, Puchiko actually manages to fire off a laser eye beam, unfortunately, she is unable to replicate it afterward.
  • Noodle Implements: When Gran and Gramps get ready to make a Phantom Cake, pulling out everything they need, which amounts to quite a pile, including (but not limited to) a bucket, a cactus, a tire, an umbrella, a drum, a moai, and a Christmas Tree.
  • Non-Human Head: Several background characters have various objects for heads.
  • One-Gender School: The Princess School only has female students, although male characters like Gema or the Omocha siblings will sometimes show up for a class.
  • Out of Focus: The introduction of the Princess School ends up causing most of the cast at the Lucky Cat Shopping District to begin appearing less frequently.
  • Overnight Age-Up: Episode 101 has the girls at the Princess School, sans Usada, drink potions that cause them to age up by 5 years. Aqua has to drink multiple due to her aging slower than the others, and that causes none to be left over when Usada does finally arrive.
  • Pet the Dog: Dejiko asks Yasushi to make a mystery phone to give to Piyoko, although this is partially to get Piyoko to stop bugging her.
  • Promotion to Opening Titles: The show's third opening, occurring right around when the Princess School was introduced, adds Rinna, Meek, Yuurei, and Aqua.
  • Pumpkin Person: The spooky store owner has a pumpkin for a head.
  • Scatterbrained Senior: Dejiko attempts to use her being much older, read: two years, as justification for not remembering Rinna.
  • Sequel Hook: Dejiko's mother mentions a Grade 2 for the princess school in the Grand Finale of the series.
  • Sequel Series: Acts as a sort of one to Panyo Panyo, Dejiko is specifically sent to earth for princess training and Rinna and Meek are both recurring characters.
  • Series Fauxnale: Episode 52 has Dejiko finally decide that it's time she returned to her home planet. She has several teary goodbyes with her friends, including Usada. Just as she is about to head home in her spaceship, Puchiko reminds her that they only had enough fuel to get to earth and have no way to return home. Cue everyone being pissed at Dejiko, including the aforementioned Usada. Dejiko responds with a "Silly Me" Gesture all while a panda-shaped spaceship flies overhead.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: A common ending for many episodes has the trouble that the characters went through end up being all for naught.
  • Shout-Out: The series contains several references to The Beatles:
    • John and Paul are musicians, whose names are inspired by The Beatles' John Lennon and Paul McCartney, respectively. Their English voice actors also try to give them voices that sound similar to the two Beatles as well.
    • Episode 43 features the duo recreating the Abbey Road Crossing, including Paul not wearing shoes.
    • Episode 51 is called "The Magically Mystical Tour", a play on the Beatles album Magical Mystery Tour. The title card even matches the album cover somewhat with Dejiko, Rabi~en~Rose, John, and Paul taking the place of the four Beatles.
    • At one point, John and Paul wear the outfits their respective musicians wore on the cover for Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
    • Episode 68 has Dejiko and Puchiko bring in two strangers who look like George Harrison and Ringo Starr. At the end of the episode, they along with John and Paul recreate the album cover of With the Beatles.
  • Sick Episode: Episode 18 has Kiyoshi get sick from eating Dejiko’s cooking and getting the ability to fire off eye beams.
  • "Silly Me" Gesture: The mascot on the front of the Omocha Toy Shop is doing this pose, sticking its tongue out while its head is on its hand. Dejiko replicates it in Episode 52 when she remembers that she does not have fuel to go home.
  • Stock "Yuck!": Amaenbou does not like cucumbers.
  • Stylistic Suck: In Episode 28, Gema tries to pass off an empty cookie box that he drew on as a princess magazine. However, the Omocha siblings convince Dejiko that the crummy quality is what makes it special as each magazine is homemade.
  • Theme Naming: Puchiko named Hokke Mirin babies after various flavors of jellies, rather than fish like Yasushi thinks.
  • Those Two Guys: John and Paul are always seen together and often make commentary on the current happenings in the episode.
  • Unfortunate Item Swap: Dejiko's bag gets swapped with a fake one in an early episode due to Yasushi using it for reference to make toys based on it and accidentally mixing it in with his stock.
  • Un-Installment: As we find out from John and Paul, Gabriel Part 5 skips over Parts 1 through 4.
  • Unmanly Secret: When Rod P. is talking about what he knows about the cast in Episode 68, he reveals some embarrassing facts about Piyoko's henchmen.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Dejiko and Usada have this kind of relationship, although it’s more often shown on Usada’s side. Several times Usada is shown to be rather upset at the possibility of Dejiko leaving the Lucky Cat shopping district due to considering her a good friend despite their quarreling.
  • Vocal Dissonance: In the English Dub, Kiyoshi and Piyoko both have rather mature-sounding voices despite being a middle schooler and eight year old respectively.
  • We Want Our Jerk Back!:
    • Episode 28 has the Omocha siblings and Gema get Dejiko to stop using her eye beams. Unfortunately, this causes her to begin acting strange because of the excess energy that needs to be removed. After having to deal with the very dangerous disposal, the trio decides that they would rather just deal with the eye beams.
    • Episode 64 has Dejiko get hit by a magical arrow that turns her kinder. Usada, Piyoko, and Puchiko decide to team up to return Dejiko back to her old self, with the former two wanting to do it simply because they can't stand Dejiko being the center of attention with the latter knowing that this isn't the actual Dejiko.
  • What You Are in the Dark: The last episode has Dejiko reroute her ship to go back to earth rather than return to Planet Di Gi Charat and her life of luxury. The only person who saw her do this was Puchiko who tells everyone after Dejiko lands.
