Battle Royale, Maine does a very good job of fitting the characters from Carrie into the molds of those from BR while keeping things largely in-character for all of them. It especially shined with how it took Carrie White herself and made her the Kazuo of the story, yet added some completely different layers based on Carrie's canonical personality instead of merely copying and gender flipping Kazuo. Also, it avoided the obvious temptation of simply having Carrie use her telekinetic powers to curbstomp the competition; she was arguably more threatening as a Villain Protagonistwithout her powers, her machine gun easily substituting for such. Her final kill in the arena also gets huge points for creativity.
That said, even though the story has two other viewpoint characters in Sue Snell and Christine Hargensen, after a certain point it becomes obvious that Carrie is going to win, the only question being how brutally everyone else is going to die. After she walks away from losing an ear while barely batting an eye, while other characters visibly suffer from similar injuries, she starts to come off as a Villain Sue. And speaking of Sues, the fate of Sue Snell and her group was also fairly anticlimatic.
FanficRecs Brief, fun little fic.
