Maybe It's Just Not For Me

Apologies for negativity.

I am not a stranger to sensitive subject matters in fiction. I do not shy away from works that contain examinations of such behaviors. But unfortunately, the way the fic handles it, I cannot recommend this story to anyone.

I like to look at media like it's a dish. If a fic has too much of one ingredient, it'll be difficult to digest. And the authors put too much rape in the kettle when they were making this and I can't eat it. Sorry for the bizarre metaphor, but I think that's my big critique here.

WPARG is a story about tragedy in a world of cartoons gone through Adaptational Mundanity. And how do they use sensitive subject matters to get you to feel bad for the characters? Why, Rape as Backstory for everyone! A little rape for you, and a little rape for you. It can almost (almost) get comical at times. The overwhelming usage of Rape as Backstory is frequently difficult to swallow, if only because all of the stories use it so damn much.

And also, I think my problems lie in the fact that these are happening to silly and wacky cartoon characters, many of whom go under Adaptational Villainy. Yeah, I can definitely take seriously the comic relief villains from The Lion King raping Timon. Yeah, that's something I can stomach with a straight face.

Is it wrong to say sometimes this story feels like it's wallowing in its own misery? It's just sad event after sad event. There's happy endings, sure, but more often than not I don't feel happy by the end of it.

Maybe I should have listened to the "Dead Dove, Do Not Eat" tag, but I think it's less that I am overly sensitive to dark topics and more that this fic is not for me. Oh well.

At least the writing's good.

Sorry you didn\'t like it and I know it\'s not for everyone, but it\'s set in a rape survivors\' support group. Saying there\'s too much rape in it kind of smacks of saying there\'s too much beef in a beef stew - that\'s the main point of the thing. I did edit the summary of the first fic in the series to make it clearer what people are getting into, though.

This isn\'t really a review. Your issues with the fic are all issues with the concept. It says right on the main page that it\'s from a kinkmeme request for a rape support group with disney characters. Also the Lion King is about murder and incest and there was a deleted scene where Scar tries to force a relaionship with a girl young enough to be his daughter. If you don\'t like this fic, fair enough, but a lot of other people do. Your taking the time to say you \"wouldn\'t reccomend to anyone\" just comes across as petty.

I have criticisms of this story myself, but I disagree with the main premise of this review. The entire concept of WPARG is that the main characters are members of a sex abuse support group; thus, the majority of protagonists are going to have rape in their background. Basically, I agree with the author\'s comment about \"complaining about there being too much beef in beef stew.\"
