It's a poor man's Alien, down to the buzzcut-sporting female lead. Are there a few too many jumpscares? Probably. Can the comic relief be annoying at times? Sure. Is (spoiler alert) Cthulhu posed as basically just some sea monster rather than the reality-shattering abortion of nature Lovecraftian horrors are supposed to be?
Jesus, it pisses me off when the Cthulhu Mythos aren't given the respect it's deserved, Lovecraft Country...
But goddammit if the effort wasn't there. If Underwater had come out before Alien it would've blown audiences away. The visuals were friggin' spectacular, the script was (mostly) competent, the actors and actresses sold the script...
Yeah, if you're a fan of the Alien franchise and you're sore about the direction it's been heading these days, give Underwater a look: it may bring up some good memories.
