You forgot to add Kawajiri's tin ear for music (though, admittedly, it wasn't as bad in this one.)

All (gruesome) form and little substance.
Everything that made this film enjoyable (as it was, albeit moderately) could be found in other films and series. The abundance of sex and gore with little to no character development beyond very trite tropes made it feel like the filmmakers were saying, ‘Eh? Eh? That’s awesome, right?... Right?...’ It was basically a Kurosawa Jidai Geki, only with fantastic elements, poor execution, and way too much sex and gore to be taken seriously.
