Ambitious, But Still Only Warming Up

One World is a For Want of a Nail Harry Potter fic that is quite ambitious in scope, but at this very early stage, it has yet to make good on many of its promises.

The concept is simple; Harry was picked up by the Grangers (apparently based on an old draft of the work) and raised alongside Hermione, resulting in him having a loving family and more knowledge of the magical world. Of course, there are many other changes at play, and a fair amount of worldbuilding and expanding on the setting, including incorporating elements from Dungeons & Dragons and other sources.

All these are potentially interesting changes to and expansions on the setting, although, at roughly halfway through the first book, we haven't seen all that much of the implications. Unfortunately, some entire scenes, often hundreds of words long, are copied verbatim from canon, which reeks of laziness and is essentially plagiarism, to say nothing of how retreading canon defeats the point of a FWOAN fic. At the very least, the author should have used his own words.

The pre-Sorcerer's Stone part is entirely original, but often comes off a Prolonged Prologue, since it's longer than the first book. Granted, it covers a much greater length of time and introduces some of the longer running plotlines, such as MI-5 investigating the wizarding world, but the pacing often drags as a result.

As usual, the Shipping aspect is the most divisive, but not entirely for the reasons one would think. The author does effectively point out that Harry and Hermione would essentially be Brother-Sister Incest, but the main problem is Ron. The author says that he's a jerk (albeit not a Death Eater), but will end up with Hermione in the end; Ron's fans will likely find this overly harsh on him, while Ron's critics most likely won't be satisfied. I can't tell if this is a poorly thought out attempt to placate both sides by denouncing Ron while sticking to canon (if it is, it failed), or if it's simply how the author feels.

The issues with Ron aside, Harry and Hermione seem to get the lion's share of development, and some of the secondary Hogwarts students don't show up much outside of the scenes where they appeared in canon.

All in all, in spite of its flaws, this fic has potential, even if, at this point in the story, much of it has yet to be realized.
