Very Artificial, but thematically decent

Right off the bat, Big Hero 6 isn't a reccord breaker, or even good story telling. Everything about it appeals to the lowest common denominator: borderline Gary Stu protagonist, recycled stereotypes as his [brother's, then actually his] friends, dead older brother, Dark Is Evil villain that shopped at the same store as Amon. Nothing about the characters spells "be emotionally invested in this", except Tadashi, who is very likeable.

However, it is a good theme piece. It shows accurately the extremes that grief can lead one into, and it manages to wage quite well the meaning of compassion and the weight of human life. The antagonist is a dark mirror of the protagonist, and while this isn't a new invention, it defenitely is played well here.

Overall, not bad, but only in regards to exemplifying a narrative mechanism. Otherwise, you're better off doing something else.

Erm, Gary Stu? Oh please, Jesus (Kirito) would like to have a talk with you in Sword Art Online. Comparing Yokai to Amon is a bit much to be honest since Amon had an inconsistent backstory in Season 1 to begin with...or were you talking about their personalities? Either way, I still think its a bit much of a comparison. Maybe the Green Goblin would be a better villain to compare him to? You are completely right about the recycled stereotypes and Tadashi being very likable though.

And interesting how you managed to make a good review with just a few amount of words. I agree that it isn't breaking any records and yeah it does fall into some superhero cliches, but I still feel that if you don't like the two main characters or the theme of the film, you really won't like the movie.

I'm comparing Yokai to Amon in outfits, not in pesonality. Though both are motivated by hatred, Yokai is a lower minded dunce, while Amon is a visionary.

I feel that Hiro is at least very close to being a Marty Stu. Super smart? Check. Most characters gravitate around him? Check. Idealised avatar for the target audience? Check.

@ Shimegi: Gambles out on the street and gets called out for it? Check. Becomes a cynic after his brothers death and gets called out for it? Check. Tries to kill a person and gets called out for it? Check. Wait a second...do those three count?

The answer is no of course.

A Marty Stu / Mary Sue, by definition however, has no flaws. Hiro's very first scene has him take part in illegal gang fights, get arrested, and then upon being freed attempt the same thing again without having learned his lesson. Not to mention how he keeps shrugging off Baymax's advice, which would help his recovery, and then attempt to outright murder a guy and lose Baymax's trust with his chips until Hiro's shows himself to have changed his ways.
