Amusing with marvellous animation... but there's not much else to love.

The Lego Movie is being hailed is a new cinematic watermark. And rightly so. Its animation will blow you away; it's amazing how beautiful thousands of Lego pieces can actually look. Animation-wise, this film is very unique. And it's also amusing too. Watching the movie, for the first few minutes, you'll love the way the characters move, talk and interact. It's funny, cute and makes you want to dive into their world. It's therefore, a shame that the rest of the movie is... mediocre.

The problem with The Lego Movie is that after the eye candy has been established and we've seen the type of humour has to offer, we're thrown into a confusing tornado of plot elements that's all over the place. It isn't bad, it's just way too much. The characters we meet along the way just aren't very interesting either. Emmet is your basic hero. Wildstyle is a bland tomboy character; she's tough and edgy but she's nice underneath, we get it. Batman is dark and gruff, like Batman should be, so no surprises there. Unikitty is... cute at first, I'm not denying that, but she quickly devolves into a generic and obnoxious cutesy character who loves saccharine things and gets upset when things aren't all bubbly and perfect. Snore. Vitruvius and the villain, Lord Business, are pretty funny, and the most enjoyable characters in the film.

And sadly, while the movie certainly has a lot of very cool moments, there's also loads that just don't make any sense. It often feels like a movie where tons of kids sent in their ideas, and the writers decided to thrown them all in. At times, you just want the film to stop, but it rarely does. There isn't enough time for the characters to develop, the plot is as basic as it gets (underdog hero has to fulfill a prophecy that he'll defeat some mysterious evil) and though I think the film's big twist is clever and really works, the film has by this point become so silly that you just want it to end. The song "Everything Is Awesome" becomes increasingly more annoying as the film progresses as well.

Overall, not a bad movie. Excellent animation, loads of action set-pieces and a good moral, but it's also too fast, with too few interesting characters and too many absurd, unnecessary moments. Kids will be hooked on it, but if you're an adult, you'll only like this movie if you can handle 90 minutes of Lego madness.

I agree about the movie being way too fast and random. I enjoyed it in the theater with my 5-year-old nephew, but I tried to watch it again later, and just couldn't enjoy it.

so silly that you just want it to end

I do not recall wanting it to end because of any silliness. Please do not speak on my behalf. Thank you.

Seriously, what the fuck are you on about? Did you not play with LEG Os as a kid or something? Or do you not know of the hobby that surrounds it?

This movie was a wonderful tribute to the vehicle for creativity that LEG Os can be and should resonate with any adult who recalls playing with them as a kid. It was fun all throughout and even highly emotional towards the end.

To the above poster: Firstly, it's LEGO BRICKS. Not "Legos". Why are so many people ignorant of this?

Secondly, yes, I did play with Lego bricks as a kid. Not as much as most kids, but still several times. I'm allowed an opinion. I didn't even say the movie was bad. It's a good movie that's very colourful and humorous, and the animation is some of the best I've seen. It just isn't as strong as several Pixar and DreamWorks movies, in my opinion. Don't be such a butthurt fanboy.

That last offense was just unnecessary.

It often feels like a movie where tons of kids sent in their ideas, and the writers decided to thrown them all in.

That's kinda the point, actually. It's supposed to feel like a kid making it up off the top of his head. It's just like the stories I made with Legos as a kid.

The song "Everything Is Awesome" becomes increasingly more annoying as the film progresses as well.

Considering it only played three times in the movie, one of which was the end credits...

Emmet is your basic hero

Also the point, but he's distinguished by traits of idiocy and being utterly brainwashed. Most heroes don't even start that low.

Wildstyle's tough and edgy but she's nice underneath, we get it

Nothing about her backstory? It's hard for her to be nice to someone who got what she always wanted through no effort of his own.

Batman is dark and gruff, like Batman should be, so no surprises there.

His fake defection wasn't a surprise? And the canon characrer rarely revels in being this dark.

Unikitty is devolves into a generic and obnoxious cutesy character who loves saccharine things and gets upset when things aren't all bubbly and perfect

She doesn't merely become upset when things aren't perfect, she works to stay positive even complete disaster has struck. She's a walking picture of trying to hold together, not an overflowing fountain of upsetness.

but if you're an adult, you'll only like this movie if you can handle 90 minutes of Lego madness.

I could play with Legos for hours and have watched this movie aplenty, so that's not as heavy as you think.

Come to think of it, if I played with Lego as a kid, I don't remember much. It's likely I played with them in nursing homes and the like, but never owned a set at home. And yet I still loved this movie.

Honestly, The Lego Movie is one of these few movies that I wanted to rewatch immediately after watching it for the first time. I loved the animation, I loved the Rapid-Fire Comedy, I loved the characters, and I loved how often it plays with overdone cliches. Granted, when you look back at it, the story is all over the place, but when you're watching the movie, you don't care - you just get sucked into the crazy, simple fun. Unless you have a way too analytical mind and just can't enjoy the movie for what it is without seeing it as merely a bunch of tropes put together that you have to dissect and analyze individually. In which case, TVTropes already ruined your life.

The song "Everything Is Awesome" becomes increasingly more annoying as the film progresses as well.

Funny. You would get a kick out of this excerpt from the abridged script down at The Editing Room:

Conformity is bad That's the moral of the day, So we'll open our non-conformist animation With an extended song, hooray! This is the only song You'll be hearing on this day It's catchy but it gets old fast And keeps re-using rhymes. Hooray!

Sorrry, but this review seemed to miss the point of the film. What you refer to as a plot that is "as basic as it gets" turns out to be a subversion of The Chosen One and Because Destiny Says So (Vitruvius made up the prophecy, and Emmet doesn't actually have anything that distinguishes him from everyone else). Wyldstyle has more motivation and backstory than your average love interest, and Lord Business is the most nuanced and morally grey antagonist I've seen in any children's movie - no, in most fiction of any kind. "Underdog hero has to fulfill a prophecy that he'll defeat some mysterious evil" sounds more like the plot of the trailer than of the actual film.

Well, for me, the biggest problem with the Lego Movie is the fact that I don't think you can derive much charm from Lego characters. Sure, the animation is indescribably fun when everything's moving, but it's difficult to take a full-length plot featuring Lego people very seriously. This is why many people couldn't get into the Cars movies. I do have a very minor liking for the first Cars (not the second one, though) but I still find the whole "Cars with faces" thing awkward and rarely charming. With The Lego Movie, I feel the same problem. It's hard to feel much emotion for Lego people. It's not because they're toys. With the Toy Story movies, there was a nice range of different character styles, thus giving it a great deal of variety, but with Lego the cast is a lot less varied and interesting. The fast-moving action scenes in the movie I found thrilling (except for when it gets too frantic and random), but the parts where the cast just talks to each other and cracks jokes bored me. I didn't play with Lego much when I was younger, so I didn't get much nostalgic watching it either. At best, The Lego Movie is an animation marvel with tons to look at and experience, but at worst, it's a clumsy adventure with "meh" characters and a "meh" plot. That's my rather unpopular opinion.

What they're saying is that your review's missing the point, and that you got some facts wrong. We already know what you think about the movie, there's no need to say it a second time.

I agree with you, TT 454. And while the characters did have some nuance, I feel they weren't as deep as this film's defenders say.

Okay, let\'s get down to brass tacks.

Actually, I don\'t have a problem with your review. You\'re entitled to your opinion, even though you\'ve missed the entire point of the movie (and failed to recognize the tropes it\'s decontructed and reconstructed and if I was allowed to I\'d call you a failed Troper), but you do not get to make that last statement! You are not allowed to speak on others behalf! That was a **** move!

Otherwise, yeah sure, have an opinion. Whatever. I\'m not here to take apart your review. If I wanted to I\'d make my own review and do so with ease. But really, I\'m just offended that you tried to speak on others behalf like that. Especailly when you are just stereotyping. I have my eyes on you. Not actually but you know what I mean.

I\'m off to do something else because I\'d rather not spend all my time making angry comments on reviews by people I don\'t know who might live halfway across the globe.

I thought there was incredible charm in the LEGO minfigures as the \"actors\" of the film, given the animation\'s strict adherence to the limitations of their movement. Wyldstyle\'s hair-flip is just the solid piece rotating on her head, for example. It\'s a very silly movie, but it has so much cleverness in the way it takes apart a by-the-numbers prophecy story, let alone the depths they drop on you in the last act. It\'s one of the funniest comedies I\'ve seen, and it\'s not trying to be the biggest drama in the world. It knows its own silliness pretty well, I\'d say.
