Shockingly Bad

I know alot of people rip on Ultimate Spiderman, and I myself have bashed Avengers Assemble quite thoroughly, but this...holy crap it makes those shows look like Justice League Unlimited by comparison. It is an incredibly awful cartoon, and I honestly don't know where to start on this shit...

I suppose the characters are a decent starting point. As should be obvious from the title alone the show centres around Hulk and the over Hulk-characters from the MU, She-Hulk, Red Hulk, A-Bomb and Skaar. And that's...pretty much where the connection to canon ends. These characters have had all their backstory and interesting traits stripped away to make for bland archetypes. Hulk is just Hulk with zero references to Banner, there's no drama about Ross being the thing he hates the most, Skaar is now a clone or some shit rather than Hulk's son, She-Hulk is a stuntwoman as opposed to the fun-loving lawyer from the main continuity...The voice acting is okay, they picked decent people for the roles, but the stupid dialogue makes it feel like their talents are being wasted.

It's clear they were trying to go for a 'light' approach, just like every other Marvel cartoon for no particular fucking reason. The problem is, you can't get invested in the action if you can't feel any drama or sense of danger. Also the 'documentary/reality TV thing' is fairly underplayed, used mainly for lame jokes.

The animation is a major weakness of the show. Certainly problematic for a cartoon. It uses that same choppy 'meh' style that Ultimate Spiderman and Avengers Assemble has, and manages to make it even worse. The shots come and go in the intervals of microseconds, shifting constantly and making for an almost nauseating experience. Like the show has ADD or something. Combat scenes are surprisingly tame considering it centers around the fucking Hulk, alot of the action either lackluster to watch or nigh-impossible to make out because of that godawful editing.

I say give it a miss.

" And that's...pretty much where the connection to canon ends" I don't find comments like these particularly helpful seeing as they're just adaptations of the source material and can do whatever the heck they want. I'm also pretty sure She-Hulk has pursued other careers instead of being just a lawyer.

Oh sure, you can make changes from the source material, but at the very least it should keep some connections to its source material. This show...well it seems like the writers only faintly heard of the Hulk and have had no contact with his mythos.

A good show like say Justice League Unlimited on the other hand will take its source material, expand upon it and make improvements.

I have to go with Kaihedgie here. It's still true to source material with some new elements added in for originality. Don't think Justice League Unlimited or any of the prior DCAU shows took a lot of liberties with the mythos that are no different from this show's changes.

Yeah, but here is a difference: In Justice League Unlimited and the DCAU, most change were an improvement over the original, or a different approach of those elements that still made them interesting. This show just oversimplifies everything; Red Hulk, for exemple, has his backstory summed up in a few seconds with no details, making it hard to understand how he became a good guy in the first place, and he is reduced to a hot shot instead of the interesting conflict the character actually has in recent comics. She-Hulk loses her interesting personnality from the comic for something of a cliché Affirmative Action Girl. And I could go on, but I won't. Overall, this show feels more like a 80s show trying to promote those characters rather than an actual adaptation.

What Theokal said. Like, in JLU you had things like Superman's moral compass being called into question every once in awhile, as well as having his power level cranked down to make him seem more down to earth. In this, the characters all seem like slightly different clones of each other. Hulk is Hulk, Red Hulk is Gun Hulk, She Hulk is Girl Hulk, Skar is Sword Hulk and A-Bomb is Seth Green Hulk.

It misses out on any potentially interesting aspects to the character, like Ross' prior hatred to Hulk/Banner and never dwells on his angst on being turned into the creature he hates most. She Hulk, rather than the ass kicking superhero party girl, is just the female hero role. Banner never gets a mention, so the Jekyll-Hyde dynamic never gets a reference and Hulk is just sort of... there.
