Regarding why I think poison falls under Broken Base and not Scrappy Mechanic: this article admits that it was "very polarizing", and this one makes a similar point. So I think it's a much better fit for Broken Base than Scrappy Mechanic. (And while the person who added poison as a Scrappy Mechanic doesn't seem to have the highest opinion of Mark Rosewater, I think he'd be honest enough to admit something like "I loved poison, but sadly most of the players hated it" if that were the case.)

I think Scrappy Mechanic entry has gotten big enough that it should probably get its own page.

Agreed, especially considering how big its folder on ScrappyMechanic.Tabletop Games is. I think I'll just go ahead and make it.

  • Lukka. Based on the story as told in the cards, he should be a fairly sympathetic character, raging against the Coppercoats for killing off the winged tiger he bonded with on Ikoria. If you actually read the fiction he's based in, however, it's clear that he has no care for said animal and even resents it due to the strain it's putting on his physical health. He comes off as a Designated Hero and a Jerkass, with later fiction attempting to give him a Freudean Excuse or two, and few tears were shed when he ended up being Compleated in Phryexia: All Will Be One and eventually killed in March of the Machine.

This reads like a The Scrappy write-up, so why is it listed under Base-Breaking Character?

I think it's a card fan/story fan distinction. Those who only follow the cards have no reason to dislike him, while those who follow the story often do. Jace was in a similar place for a long time—those who only followed the cards tended to not like him for being a Spotlight-Stealing Squad who had a lot of flavor text that made him very smug and dismissive. The story, however, tended to make him a lot more put-upon and vulnerable, so those who followed the fiction tended to like him more. (He's been largely Rescued from the Scrappy Heap these days, though he was never universally disliked.)

That makes sense, though the write-up needs to be tweaked a bit to emphasize that he was liked by people who only saw the card portrayals. As-is, it just reads like the inconsistency between the cards and the story is another reason to dislike him.

I'm afraid I'm not the best person to do it, since I haven't followed the story for a while and don't have the best grasp of the drama.

I think he's closer to a scrappy than a Base-Breaking Character, to be honest. I remember him being mostly derided for being an unlikable idiot who constantly screws up, and even the people who did like him and felt that he had potential (1) admit that they're in the minority, and (2) agree that he was mishandled.
