I firmly believe that Dishonored is guilty of an Idiot Plot, but a certain member of this site disagrees with me. I argued that a significant portion of the plot and many, many deaths could've been avoided if Corvo stopped being a Heroic Mime for one minute and actually spoke up when he was accused of killing the Empress at the start of the game. This is what he had to say in his reason for removing my edit:

1) The Spymaster, Corvo's superior, framed him, the religious head Thaddeus Campbell accused him. So in terms of rank, guards are not gonna take the word of a foreign bodyguard. Even if the guards still didn't believe Corvo, it would've been better than him just standing there and taking the fall for a crime he didn't commit.

2) Saying "I am innocent" is not a historically proven way to get the ear and sympathy of guards.

3) Corvo is Heroic Mime in presentation but 1 has many moments where he does in fact communicate and dialogue based on the reactions of NPC (like Lady Boyle who you talk to by text-prompts and who respond to your verbal comments). So this entire thing is pointless...

And here is my counter-argument:

1) From what we saw, the guards only mistook him for the killer because they just so happened to find Corvo holding the Empress' bloody corpse in his arms and couldn't find any other bodies or witnesses to suggest otherwise. The fact that a person of higher rank accused him does not change the fact that Corvo could've still made some sort of attempt to correct them and explain how it really happened.

2) There's a difference between just saying "I am innocent" and nothing else, and saying "I am innocent, because...". He had plenty of evidence to support him not killing the Empress or doing something to Emily. For example, if he did either one (especially the latter), why would he still be there?

3) So why didn't he say anything to them? The fact that Corvo has dialogue options in the game actually makes the scene even dumber. Of all the times he could and should have said something, that would've been the best time to do it.

Which of us do you agree with?

Yeah, not an example. First off, Idiot Plot requires multiple characters all doing dumb things.

Secondly, he's not actually mute. So the whole "drop the Heroic Mime thing" is nonsensical.

Thirdly... yeah, there's no reason to think the guards would listen to him. At all. Again, found with the body. Even if he goes "it wasn't me" and offers the best explanation in the world, he's getting locked up at least for holding. And given the framejob by his superiors, ain't nobody listening to him.

I'd also add additional reasons that I didn't do before (full discl:I was the poster referred to above who removed it for those reasons listed)

4) Corvo would only say, "Dudes with magic powers teleported in". Yeah, that's not going to fly...

5) Dishonored is set in Fantasy Victorian London. It's not a democracy so it's not like Corvo has Miranda rights, access to attorney.

6) Even then only witness would be Emily who at that point is kidnapped and missing.

I mean not to be rude, but the prologue was scripted well, and done so to specifically communicate the rules of that world, both the fantasy stuff, the magical stuff, and so on. There's a reason why that plot flows so well and why it's hard to pick holes on the set-up. It was done well.

Okay, so I got around to replaying Dishonored now that I have it on PC. I take back what I said about it having an Idiot Plot. The scene alone may have seemed like Corvo got arrested because he never spoke up, but by rewatching the stuff that came before and after it, it was pretty obvious that it was a set-up. My mistake.

For complete monster: Waverly Boyle, an elitist bitch who enjoys throwing parties to rub her incredible wealth in the underclass' faces. That, however, is far from the worst thing she does: Her favourite game involves befriending an idealistic young socialite and completely breaking her, possibly driving her to suicide in the process.

Take it to this thread. Fair warning though, there's a rule against using Offscreen Villainy as a qualifier for CM-hood.
