So, CCG Importance Dissonance. Aside from the fact this isn't a CCG (personally, I don't think that matters and Tropes Are Flexible is at full play here), I'm not sure it really counts because these aren't actually mobile suits, they're all Gunpla.

The laconic is "Characters in the card game are significantly more or less powerful than in the source material," but the trope's description is mostly focused on "Mooks and Red Shirts are as powerful as protagonists" which isn't really the case, as one of the criticisms of the game is that grunts are way underpowered. I also took issue with some of the specific examples, which I'll address below.

So basically, my issues are threefold:

  • Firstly, does in-fiction power matter when these aren't mobile suits, they're Gunpla?
  • Secondly, if their power is proportional to their importance (but not their in-universe power), is that the trope or not?
  • And thirdly, some of the examples seem to split hairs.

  • CCG Importance Dissonance: Oh, boy is it present here. The ranking of various Mobile Suits seem to differ despite how good and their incredible importance. Among them:
    • The original RX-78-2 Gundam, as usual, is an incredibly great unit despite being objectively the least advanced Gundam in its continuity.
      • This entry (added by me) only matters if the trope is about "inaccurate power scaling in a game" since the grandaddy Gundam is undoubtedly popular and important.
    • The Stark Jegan, despite being stronger than the standard Jegan and one of its most iconic moments is its one-on-one duel with the Kshatriya, is a 1-star unit while the basic Jegan is a 2-star.
      • This entry also only counts if it's about inaccurate power scaling, since the Stark Jegan is stronger than a Jegan, but it's a much less popular suit and accomplished less.
    • The Den'An Zon, canonically the most advanced UC suit in the game (what with being 21 years newer than any other suit included at launch) is a weak 2-star suit.
      • Ditto. The Den'An Zon is weaker in fiction, but its power is arguably proportional to its importance to other grunts
    • Despite being the same unit but with different equipment, the Sword Strike is a 3-star compared to the 4-star Aile Strike.
      • This is where I'm going into wonkiness. As a whole, the Sword Strike is worse than the Aile Strike. There's a reason the Aile was the usual form the Strike took. The Aile Strike (despite being lame) is the most common, the most popular, and the most effective form of the Strike (barring Expanded Universe). However, it doesn't explain the legs, head, or torso having different stats
    • The Gundam Mk-II (AEUG ver.) is only a 2-star despite it and the Hyakku Shiki surviving both the Gryps and First Neo Zeon Wars
      • This entry is only valid if the trope is about "power scaling not proportional to importance" because while the Mk. II was important, is popular, and is awesome, it's also an incredibly weak unit that was arguably outclassed by grunt suits at the time of its initial deployment, let alone by the end of even the Gryps War.
    • The AGE-1 Titus, only lasting a few episodes before being discarded, is a 3-star.
      • This entry lacks a frame of reference. Something can't be dissonant if there's nothing for it to be dissonant to.
