If I may poke holes in this law's explanation, is it possible that in some cases of dark works with humourous fans, is it possible that, depending on how the work initially presented itself, the fans may just plain not be taking it seriously to begin with (or simply memeing and nothing more), rather than the fandom levity being some kind of "coping mechanism"? ULTRAKILL is what I was thinking of, since as far as I remember, the game's premise was more on the Excuse Plot side until it slowly unravelled to what it is now, not to mention Gianni Matragrano's contributions to the Memetic Mutation.

I dunno, the "coping mechanism" kind of reason may apply in some cases but others are more likely borne out of less… "empathetic" reasoning.
