As an anthropology major I know that the majority of civilizations throughout history didn't and don't separate the teen years from the adult years, and as a result those problems are confined to the people who had emotional problems to begin with.
Also, we debunked raging hormones years ago. We can't find any correlation between "teen problems" and hormones.
The whole thing is environmental.

A lot of these aren't really examples of this trope, just examples of 'emo kids.' The trope is about evil teens, not depressed ones. This really needs to be cleaned up.
