Can't say for certain due to my lack of knowledge of the work, but it sounds like you can go ahead and add it.
Apathy is Death. Worse than Death, because at least a rotting corpse feeds beasts and insects.Added to the description a short while ago:
"Since most examples date from after 1865, this is an Undead Horse Trope."
What does that even mean?
Tharkun140 removed the following entry with the reason "Not an example", and I can't figure out why:
- The Bible, in the book of Ephesians, has some instructions for Christian masters and slaves. After telling the slaves to show Happiness in Slavery because they're really working for God, Paul goes on to tell the masters to treat their slaves well for the same reason. (This passage is sometimes used today to teach about employer/employee relationships).
And masters, treat your slaves in the same way. Do not threaten them, since you know that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no favoritism with him.
I don't see how this isn't an example. It's clearly a passage in the Bible telling slave owners to be the kind, sympathetic sort.
Hide / Show RepliesIt discusses slavery, but the example does not have slave owners as characters. Much like the Evil Overlord List is advice to a Big Bad, but doesn't actually use Big Bad as a trope.
Link to TRS threads in project mode here.Which makes it a Discussed Trope, which I always thought was a valid form of an example.
Would Tuon from "The Wheel of Time" qualify as this trope?
There are arguments for and against whether she actually fits the "is kind to her slaves" part — on the one hand, she treats her damane quite well by Seanchan standards (i.e. she treats them as a dog owner might treat a beloved pack of dogs), but on the other hand she does still break their minds and also treating them as an excellent pet owner would their dogs is still treating them sub-human.
But aside from that, there is also the fact that she's a person who would be a completely awesome person on almost every level if it wasn't for the BIG detriment of owning (and worse, breaking) slaves.
