As your friendly neighborhood Admin Team, the gang here at TVTropes HQ is always working to improve the site.
Many of those improvements begin with suggestions posted right here, on the Community Wishlist. Is there a feature you really want on TVTropes? Post it.
Is there something we could be doing better? We want to know. Do you think we look fat in these pants? We were totally afraid of that. See a bug? Report it.
Important things to know:
- We're all about that content-creation life! The top contenders for our attention are ideas that'll create more content, like the video uploading feature, or speed up launching new pages. On the flip side, design or layout tweaks won't be our top priority.
- Help us dig through the goldmine of old wishlist items! If you have an old request gathering dust or spot one you're totally on board with, give it a bump and a like. There's a treasure trove of 6+ years' worth of ideas just waiting to be rediscovered. Items without enough love may not make the cut and will be closed.
- Was your wishlist item locked up without an explanation? It was most likely disapproved or just too big of a task versus the benefit it would ultimately have. Time is precious, and we want to focus on updates with the biggest bang for the buck. Don't be discouraged though! We appreciate every idea and we're always listening.
In the meantime, we could suggest that the mods manually slap a TLP ban on anyone who gets a wiki editing ban from now on.
I think that instead of simply banning edit banned users from the TLP, the launch button should be hidden manually.
And if the user tries to launch it by typing in the URL (i.e. tvtropes.org/pmwiki/launches.php?action=launch&id=00000000000000&trope=NotATrope), it should just redirect to this page instead of trapping the system in an infinite loop.
If there's one thing that amateur web dev has taught me, it's that you have to program like your users are either geniuses or idiots, and that means patching the URL holes.
edit: fixed punctuation
Edited by SilverCrown^ My concern with that, is just that it'll only solve one of the issues. It won't solve the issues of people making spam drafts or adding bad examples. It's not only banned tropers who do this, but banned tropers almost always show the same pattern of behavior on the TLP as what got them banned to begin with.
Edited by WarJay77 Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure PurenessOr how about consolidating the edit AND TLP bans into one, so that the moderator can lift the TLP ban if the user doesn't abuse the TLP?
(Alternatively, the TLP ban could be optional - like a checkbox which the moderator can uncheck if they don't think the offender will abuse it.)
And then there's the Band-Aid fix of just setting all edit banned tropers to read-only while in the TLP (they can still add hats and bombs, but no commenting, creating, or launching drafts.)
This seems like a complex issue, but it may require some time to solve once the dev queue gets cleared.
This might seem extreme, but I think it's necessary. See, there's never anything good that comes from edit-banned tropers using the TLP. Usually they just continue making the same mistakes that got them banned in the first place, and essentially it's a form of ban-evasion, or at least Loophole Abuse, as it's an attempt to still get their edits on the wiki. The clincher, though? Edit-Banned tropers can't launch drafts. The launch fails every time, because they aren't authorized to actually edit the wiki.
It seems pretty cut and dry to me. While TLP bans should still be able to be given as their own specific category of ban if the bad behavior was TLP-centric, edit bans should automatically come with a TLP ban. It's just too much of a risk with almost no actual benefit.
