No, the film was called "The Mandoran Ape" on ABC television but I suspect that it had a different title overseas. Still 80's cheeze tho...

My first thought was it might been called "The Mandarin Ape" but on Google that just brings up Chinese monkey movies and a podcast sorry

Okay not an ape in Star Wars armor, the movie was about the titual ape being sought by a team who go to Africa to capture it.
Only It Can Think and said ape makes monkeys out of the heroes.
I don't know if I spelled "the mandoran ape" correctly but is was a movie that aired on ABC back in The '80s - when ABC aired cheezy movies and made for TV movies back then.
