The TVTropes Trope Finder is where you can come to ask questions like "Do we have this one?" and "What's the trope about...?" Trying to rediscover a long lost show or other medium but need a little help? Head to Media Finder and try your luck there. Want to propose a new trope? You should be over at You Know, That Thing Where.
I think the one you want is I Was Just Passing Through, though that's more of a rival-to-rival deal. It's also stock behavior for a Tsundere, which is a love interest.
Come to think of it, I don't think we have an exact match for a friendship. This could be tropable if you can find enough examples.
Edited by CharisetIt's similar enough, so I'm not gonna complain, thanks!
we're so kink compatible we could pilot a jaegerI think this one should be made, definitely. I've seen it most often as a form of playful banter, which we don't quite have a trope about (Witty Banter is mostly about news and radio anchors, not fictional characters). Often, in a story, it would be awkward for the character to save someone and say outright that it was because of love or friendship; it would come off as too sentimental (or simply unoriginal), so you have to "be cool"/witty by suggesting that "If you died, who would do the dishes?" or whatever. I smell a larger supertrope, too — characters in sad/scary/romantic situations will very often humorously pretend to care deeply about trivial things, a kind of in-universe What Do You Mean It's Not Heinous?… and this can overlap with Sophisticated as Hell, with the Cool Old Guy swearing in front of the Littlest Cancer Patient, etc.
I agree. And if there aren't enough examples to trope it, someone should write a few, because this situation has so many interesting/touching/funny applications.
Is there a trope where the hero dramatically rescues a friend because of a trivial promise, like: "you promised to treat me to dumplings" or "we were going to watch fireworks together" or "we have a test tomorrow, who else am I going to cheat off of in chemistry?" or "dude, the house got really messy while you were gone" instead of something more reasonable like the Power of Friendship.
I know it overlaps with Determinator and The Promise, but this is more about how the hero may not acknowledge the friendship and needs some Lame Excuse to go save the hostage.
Or it could be played straight and that the hero really did save him just because the hostage makes awesome pie or something and he'll sure miss that pie.
