The TVTropes Trope Finder is where you can come to ask questions like "Do we have this one?" and "What's the trope about...?" Trying to rediscover a long lost show or other medium but need a little help? Head to Media Finder and try your luck there. Want to propose a new trope? You should be over at You Know, That Thing Where.
Seems related to Oblivious to His Own Description.
May lead to Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!, or Suspiciously Specific Denial
We can never truly eradicate the coronavirus, but we can suppress its threat like influenzaRight, I think Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap! is close enough to work, even if in my specific examples, the "Oh Crap" moment never comes.
To be honest, these four tropes seem to share a lot in common, there should be some sort of supertrope, but I can't really decide what to call.
Master of Delusion if they never do put the pieces together
This one is a bit specific, but I'm wondering if there's a trope that encapsulates it and other similar joke constructions:
Is there a trope for when a naïve person denies something, but, in their denial, accidentally presents evidence for that something? Basically, the person saying "I don't believe X, because of Y." when everyone else (or at least the viewer) realizes Y is proof of X?
Some examples would be stuff like:
"Of course Clark Kent isn't Superman. He's such a coward, whenever Superman shows up, he's already ran away to hide from the commotion."
"I can't believe Bob killed himself. He seemed so happy last time I saw him, he had a big project he was working on, bought some rope, a stool..."
"Bob's not gay! He's in love with Alice. Why else would he take her shoe shopping, do her hair, accompany her to Broadway plays?"
"His ex-wife isn't the killer - she has a solid alibi, all the women from her spousal abuse support group told us she was attending a meeting."
And so on...
