Is there a trope for a character who exists in a written work and is "onscreen" at least once (so not The Ghost), but who is usually not mentioned or acknowledged even in scenes where they would logically be present?
I'm kind of thinking of a specific example (the main character's little sister in The New Job). She is mentioned like three times over the course of 100 pages, but during all that time she's living in the same small household as the main character, meaning she's almost certainly present in other scenes where the narrator just doesn't bother to mention her. (Several times while reading it I actually found myself thinking, "Wait, is Theofil's sister still living here?" When she is mentioned, it's confirmed that she is.)
This example almost feels like it would fit in Behind the Black, but that looks to be exclusively a visual-media trope.
Beneath Notice also seems close, but that's about somebody not being noticed (and, usually, seeking not to be noticed) by other characters. Would it also apply to somebody who is hidden from the reader because of narrative choices?
