As your friendly neighborhood Admin Team, the gang here at TVTropes HQ is always working to improve the site. Many of those improvements begin with suggestions posted right here, on the Community Wishlist. Is there a feature you really want on TVTropes? Post it. Is there something we could be doing better? We want to know. Do you think we look fat in these pants? We were totally afraid of that. See a bug? Report it.

Important things to know:

  • We're all about that content-creation life! The top contenders for our attention are ideas that'll create more content, like the video uploading feature, or speed up launching new pages. On the flip side, design or layout tweaks won't be our top priority.
  • Help us dig through the goldmine of old wishlist items! If you have an old request gathering dust or spot one you're totally on board with, give it a bump and a like. There's a treasure trove of 6+ years' worth of ideas just waiting to be rediscovered. Items without enough love may not make the cut and will be closed.
  • Was your wishlist item locked up without an explanation? It was most likely disapproved or just too big of a task versus the benefit it would ultimately have. Time is precious, and we want to focus on updates with the biggest bang for the buck. Don't be discouraged though! We appreciate every idea and we're always listening.

I'm going to second this being a useful future.

I've already seen people use their forum signature or title for this, so adding a whole new option for something that would only be relevant to a tiny portion of the population and can already be done with existing features seems like overkill.

First, given how many times I've seen female people on the internet correct the use of 'he' or 'his' alone, because a lot of people assume male to be the default, I would dispute your assessment that it is only relevant to a tiny portion of the population.

Second, it is not a 'whole new option'. I cannot reliably speak to the technical side, but to me it seems simply like another instance of the 'From' field we all already have in our profile, we can already fill out as we like and with a specific purpose.

Third - and I mostly point this out because your assessment that it only refers to a tiny part of the populace probably meaning trans people, and I feel the need to address that - I find the statement that people who feel the need to inform others of their preferred pronouns - something that is *quite* stressful to do over and over again for trans people - should just use the space others can use to creatively express themselves with signatures and titles a bit transphobic, if a little bit of tech update might do the trick.

Inclusion is about making the bit of effort to make everyone participate and feel welcome after all.

I’ve gotten called he/him a couple times and had to correct people. I’ve also called some tropers the wrong gender because their avatar or username is ambiguous and I didn’t think to check their profile. Having pronouns next to relationship status- or even as a replacement, since I’m not attached to the relationship status- would be really useful and practical for everyone.

I'm also not particularly attached to the relationship status. Sure it's funny and all, but if it was a choice between the two, "preferred pronouns" is much more useful for all members.

Yeah, agree this would be useful - as a girl with a not-obviously-female username I've been called he/him quite a bit through the years on various sites.

As far as I know, the term "preferred pronoun" is mostly used by transgender people. Perhaps just "gender" (or ideally, giving the option to choose the wording) would be a better idea.

Yes the term as it's most pop culturally known is associated with transgender people. But why is that an issue?

Reducing it down to 'gender' would also exclude nonbinary or genderfluid people to some degree. Some people prefer not to be able to addressed by gender pronouns at all (who'd prefer their name to be used instead of Pronouns) where a gender-indicator would not solve anything.

Gender also runs into the trouble of people abusing it/trolling by putting things like 'attack helicopter' on there.

Still not embarrassing enough to stan billionaires or tech companies.

I still think this is a good idea. Just have a list; he/him, she/her, they/them. And we can add others on request if someone likes some other pronoun.
