Random thought: in Blazing Blade, you never actually fight Sonia at full strength, as she's taken a large wound from Brendan beforehand. Makes me wonder if that wasn't just bluster when she says she's stronger than Limstella.

Yea, I'm still kind wondering why she never healed herself. I'm not aware there's a limitation on what stave can't heal besides, well, death.

Well, they generally can't target the user. She did probably have a ton of time to go through a number of Vulneraries, though.

The real reason is because plot (Warning: plot wounds may reduce Max HP or cause unexpected death. Use with caution).

Largo loses an arm between Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn, which is why he's not playable in the latter. There's also a bunch of characters across multiple universes who have permanently lost eyes and have visible scars.

My headcanon is that staves are only effective if used within a relatively short period after the injury, so presumably Sonia missed her window.

Or staves are only effective against flesh wounds. Stuff that isn't immediately life threatening. You might be at 1 HP, but you're not actually suffering life-threatening wounds until you get that final damage point, at which point you're either crippled for life (plot-critical characters get that) or dead.

Which just brings us to the question of what exactly HP represents.

The way I see staves (And magical healing in a lot of media) is that all it does is accelerate the body's natural healing. It can still save your life of course, sealing a wound before you bleed out and whatnot, but it can't allow a human to restore lost body parts like a lizard.

This also means it doesn't make traditional medicine and surgery completely obsolete.

HP means whatever it needs to for the author

sometimes it means that as soon as they hit 0 they're dead, sometimes it means that they're merely knocked out, sometimes it means absolutely nothing

[up]Eh, during Conquest, Lilith gets punched once by a Faceless and dies. Plot wounds generally are not the same as gameplay wounds.

End of Revelations, when you beat him after he's revealed as the traitor and possessed by Anankos. He tries to kill himself to stop Anankos' possession and because he thinks it's the only way to make up for his betrayal.

sure, she is literally never mentioned in revelations again after her appearance in chapter 6. but.

At least dying to Hans in Birthright is more believable. Still dumb for it to happen seeing as that death comes from cutscene incompetence.

She gets a proper dignified leaving forever with her dad in Heirs of Fate, which is Revelations Gone Horribly Wrong. So it works out there.

This gives me a nice idea in a scenario where Nino as a Sage confronts Sonia and she is trying to guilt trip her...

Sonia: "You... You wouldn't kill someone who is already wounded right? Can you imagine the guilt of killing someone while they are down!?"

Nino: *Uses a Mend staff* I thought about, so I already fixed you."

Sonia: "Huh!?"

Nino: "I figured if I fixed you up first... It wouldn't be cowardly at all, ...would it!?"

(Nino proceeds to completely obliterate Sonia.)

Yes, this is based on a certain moment from Jojo Diamond Is Unbreakable.

Speaking of Elibe, I remember Blazing Blade was the game where I first heard the term "Sword Saint."

After playing Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, I kind of want Fire Emblem to have a Sword Saint class that matches the one in Sekiro. For those who are unaware of what the Sekiro Sword Saint is like, he fights with a sword in one hand, a spear in the other, and occasionally pulls out a firearm. And he's an absolute beast in combat.

Soo... I was taking a look at some unused data from Fates, and there are a fare share of scrapped blushing portraits that are never actually seen in-game.

Now, while I haven't played Fates. I do have some context on some of the characters. And 3 of those unused blushing portraits caught my eye, because they are for characters that feels really bizarre to even have those portraits in the first place.

The characters in question in those unused blushing portraits are, Iago, Hans and Garon.

It's entirely possible that there was also the intention for post-game-like recruiting of NPCs/villains. Awakening did it, after all, so it had to be an idea that was on their radar. I'm guessing it probably never happened because the amount of dev work rqeuired to make three separate paths—even without a postgame—would already be insane.

It's very likely that there were meant to be more postgame DLC characters for Fates just like Awakening. IIRC, a couple of the capturable bosses (Candace and Nichol) and Lala the one-scene dancer also have files implying full playability.
