I've always found the Syameimaru spelling bizarre. Momizi too, although slightly less so. I blame the fact that I saw "Momiji" first, and more often.

It makes perfect sense if you're familiar with the Japanese syllabary, but none otherwise. Don't think about it too much, the weird alternate spellings are a relic of translation, and don't have anything to do with how they're pronounced.

Right. To cut a long story short, it's the same thing transliterated using a different romanization system.

I just find it hilarious how, in IN's Extra, Mokou's name is translated as "Huziwara", but she's still got a spell card translated as "Fujiwara: Flaw Of Forgiving Shrine"

ZUN wrote the boss names in English originally. The spellcard translations were added by the translators. ZUN uses the weird romanization schema, and the translators just didn't bother to edit the existing name-image.

That seems like poor form. If you're not going to edit the existing text to be consistent, shouldn't you at least be consistent with it yourself?

Wouldn't it be more work to make a new boss-name-image and put it in than it is to just add in the translated dialogue? I don't know: I'm asking.

Specifically, ZUN uses Kunrei-shiki. The translators don't, because K-s looks weird and almost no one uses it. Even most of the Japanese fandom uses Hepburn.

Well, you'd need to photoshop it, but they already do that for some other things. Those tend to be in Japanese though, so I can see how it'd feel like a waste of time. I think what Super Dimensionman was suggesting is that they alter their own translation to match the game's.

Oh, it would certainly be more work, but when I'm using an unofficial translation patch for an independently developed and published Japanese game, I have standards.

They could go either way and I would be satisfied. I just don't like things being inconsistent, which is why the whole "o/ou/ō" thing bothers me as well.

And I hate Masochist!Tenshi, but I have to admit that I found Yuuka's method to benefit while denying Tenshi hilarious.

It's her expression. That look which manages to be completely goofy while at the same time being utterly deliberate and obvious trollishness.

To expand further, the Shameimaru/Fujiwara/Momiji romanization looks like how it's pronounced in Japanese, while the Syameimaru/Huziwara/Momizi is more like a syllabe per syllabe romanization.

Also, the wwww thing comes from their word for laugh (pronounced warau).

As far as I know, it's not wrong to pronounce Tewi with a w, the Te-i thing is an approximation (for Japanese) as there's no "wi" sound in Japanese (although there's a quick "ui"), and I don't think ZUN would have romanized it as Tewi if it wasn't meant to be pronounced differently than Te-i.

But I'm typing this in another window while keeping an eye on the thread because this post is long, so I can congratulate you for realizing your mistake and I won't dwell on it. You're also accepting and asking for criticism, which is another step in the right direction.

Well, I'm glad that we can see on slightly more level ground this time. However, I rather fancy our slight antagonism, as it allows for challenging and interesting debate.

First of all, I haven't been talking to you in anything other than insults because I've felt there's no point in doing anything else. I've dealt with a ton of people like you and they all react the same. It's just a hobby so it doesn't need to be perfect. If you don't like my work don't read it. The people that like my stuff outnumber you therefore I'm good. Blah blah blah. I've lost the desire to waste time trying to get people to improve when they just don't want to.

I see what you mean. I myself used to be that kind of person, and I sort of am still one today, but I've been steadily working to improve myself.

So here it is, the criticism you've been asking for.

First of all, you're not characterizing Aya the way you are because you think it's interesting, or because you think it makes for a compelling story. You're doing it because it's different. People depict characters the way they do because they work.

Yes, I was doing it for the sake of being different. I just put my hands to the keyboard and typed that. Looking back, It really was kind of stupid.

It's ridiculous to take Aya's main defining characteristic and act like it's all a sham just so your story can be ~different~. I'm coming to this conclusion because you keep emphasizing how it's different and no one else does it. If no one else is doing something, there's quite possibly a reason.

Like I said above, it truly did look ridiculous. And yes, I do emphasize that my fic is different. I'm well aware that people reuse the same things over and over again—this site is a testimony to that. Still, I like to come up with things that are truly out-there, truly strange and different, to draw in readers. But thanks to your critique, I've realized that I need to do it using something else.

These paragraphs are in Aya's voice, so it's a little jarring that "she" (that is, you) keeps referring to her newspaper as "the BBM". Is she actually saying "the bee-bee-emm"? Could you just say "Bunbunmaru"? If you don't like typing it, you can copy-paste it. That's what I used to do before I memorized how Aya's last name was spelt.

As I've stated before, I'm a lazy bastard. And library keyboards suck.

Aya is my favorite character, and it's annoying enough to see her depicted as an unrepentant unlikable horrible pervert that no one likes. Seeing her depicted as just a straight-up asshole is even worse.

Really? I though Momiji was your favorite character? I remember you lamenting ZUN's decision to make her aggressive in another thread.

In fact, I generally hate seeing just about any Touhou character depicted as an asshole, except in very specific cases (I find likable depictions of Medicine as out of character as I would a bitchy Yuyuko). It's great that Touhou lets you interpret characters your own way, but some personalities just "work" better than others.

Hm. I've always interpreted the Touhou Girl's to be rather snarky and asshole-ish. It's just how I always thought of them.

I think those are the main issues I wanted to point out. I used to act almost the exact same way you did, and I didn't have people sternly telling me to cut it out. I had people insisting I was a terrible person and creating threads devoted to numbered lists of why I was such a terrible person. Mod-approved numbered lists of why I was such a terrible person. I was an annoying, self-righteous prick about stuff too, and after being one and coming out of it relatively unscathed and having learned from the experience, I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

There was a 'wi' sound in Japanese (they wouldn't have a character for it otherwise), but it's not used anymore. It's in Tei's name to show how old she is. Same with Tenshi.
