I don't think their gamebreaker status had anything to do with their canonical power. Just that mistakes were made in character creation and there wasn't enough time to balance them or something?

But... that's like traveling almost all the way to your destination through harsh terrain, by foot, with only the bare essentials, then turning back a mile from the goal because you noticed you ran out of water. Or to not use any stupid metaphors, it's like a big, freaking waste!

Hopefully we can look forward to Mokou, Kaguya, Wriggle, Nitori and some more SA and UFO characters in the next game/expansion. And Genji. As a secret unlockable character.

Speaking of Flandre I noticed that another fandom dispute is over how her power works and whether there are any counters.

For example, in one doujin Flandre has used Four of a Kind and tries to kyuu Remilia but Remilia uses fate hax to make one of the Four of a Kinds be the target instead. In another, Flandre is attacking some ghost or something that's visiting the mansion and tries to kyuu it but Remilia interrupts the line of sight with her hand and takes the blow to protect the ghost. I'm almost certain that's not how it works but it was interesting anyway.

There was some argument in the comments of the Tag Dream Flandre fight about how powerful Flandre's ability was but it was mostly fanwank by someone who admitted to hating the character so, meh.

I think she does need line of sight, since her power is basically Mystic Eyes of Death Perception without needing physical contact.

I don't know, considering how she describes the act of "Kyu"ing as her shooting the target's eye which she already has in her hand, I think that while she needs initial line of sight, you can't stop her in the process of doing it by just removing that something from her line of sight.

Now, kicking her hard or doing something similar that would interrupt her from finishing that action, I think that might work. <<

Loved those Flandre doujins you posted. There's all sorts to say about her but I can't think of much right now, so later.

PS: About Mokou/Kaguya, the only difference between them and every single game on the Dummied Out page is that less work was wasted. Still, we can hope to see them eventually. Just as long as he implements them both in the same game!

Where exactly did this information about the fighting game characters come from?

^ We were discussing why ZUN hasn't put Flandre in the fighting games, and it drifted into discussing other characters of comparable power (Mokou, another EX Boss) who have been Dummied Out of the fighting games, and Mokou's reason for being dummied ties with Kaguya's, so there ya go.

It's mentioned on Touhou wiki but no citation is given so I couldn't tell you where the information came from. Nitori's page, under fun facts, says that the information came from an interview with ZUN. Same for Wriggle, Mokou, and Kaguya. So, yeah.

Anyway, Flandre is a pretty cool guy. And I hear that her wings are made of cookies. Or some kind of candy. Either way, Flandre is clearly delicious.

Apparently we didn't feel like arguing over how sane she is.

I rather feel like she isn't that insane, just really childish and impulsive; and she happens to have the worst kind of power for someone impulsive to have.

Yeah, my interpretation of her is that she's a child who was never really taught that it's bad to do certain things because it's kinda hard to discipline a kid who could blow you up when she's angry.

That's probably the reason why she gets paired with Mokou often. She can survive getting blown up and is generally seen as one of the more moral Touhou characters, making her one of the few characters who could teach Flandre the concept of what's right and wrong.

Yeah, I hear that. I could get behind stretching it further to make her pretty much a study of what would happen if you gave a (perpetually) little child that kind of power. Children are capable of being sweet and friendly, but they also have to learn empathy. Until that happens, if a child is too annoyed by you, then it'll want you to... vanish.

Making her a complete and utter psychopath is not very interesting because that simply gives you a superpowered psycho who also looks cute, which has been done to death and back.

Hey, Mokou is usually considered a pretty moral lady, isn't she? When she's not being a crazy bitch whose only purpose in life is to repeatedly kill Kaguya. That's an interesting take... It'd work very well with the idea of Cirno and Flandre being friends, because of Sparky's idea of Cirno looking up to Mokou as a sort of superhero, and both of our idea that Mokou would be amused by Cirno. In fact, I'd imagine Flandre kinda looking up to Cirno (an idea I got from their manzai sketch), so you'd end up with a really fun dynamic there...
