Wow, that much? You'd probably need to break the box office record a few times over for this to not be a flop. Might want to pray for the studio, really.
Wake me up at your own risk.Surely the idea that nobody can remember the plot is hyperbole. Half of the jokes are about how it’s dances in wolves or Pocahontas with giant blue cat aliens. Sure seems to me like people remember enough of the plot.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersAnd they currently working on the 3rd and 4th movies as we speak
Its rather insane how massive this whole thing is
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."The fact that the odds are so stacked against this film means that it's going to have an amazing opening and make back its budget. The irony is life compels this to happen.
Dang, so if the $2 billion budget thing is true, then this needs to make $4 billion to be profitable, which... even if this does end up being successful, no movie has even cracked $3 billion before, so I doubt the incredibly late sequel to a movie that has no major fandom to speak of, isn't attached to a major franchise IP, and whose main hook is "the first movie made a lot of money and then people forgot about it for ten years... also they filmed some stuff underwater" is going to get that far.

Disney100 Marathon | DreamWorks MarathonYeah, the plot wasn't all that forgettable. Nor was the movie all that terrible, for that matter.
Optimism is a duty.I rewatched it recently, and yeah it is a pretty good film. The plot is standard, but it works for the purposes of the film. But I will say that the characters aren't particularly memorable outside of Sigourney Weaver and the villain.
Eh, Ney Ney's gonna get some people go to theaters again.
Also, the movie did not cost 2 billion dollars, people.
It's still a stupidly expensive 400 million dollar risk, but considering that it's a 2022 sequel to an at the time really expsneive 250ish million dollar 2009 sfx extravaganza, the inflated budget is not unexpected, specially with the level of technical advancement that can be seen on the trailers.
Yeah, a lot of the talk surrounding this movie is memoryholing stuff. I for one remember when this movie gave thousands of moviegoers depression at the idea of not being able to go to Pandora. It clearly had an impact.
I also remember the 4chan threads where people wildly speculated on the history of pandora, its fauna, and of course dream about meeting their own alien waifu. Those lasted well over a year after the movie permiered.
The 2 Billion number is likely referring to the developing film technology that James Cameron needed for the sequel, and those costs can be recuperated through side-projects or simply being "not official." I mean, this is sequel was in development for 13 years. A generation has past since the first Avatar.
Acording to some articles I've seen, aparently Disney has invested like around a billion dollar in the franchise in general. That covers not only the tech, which will be used thorough the sequels Cameron has planed, but the production for the next four movies.
Its weird how they are releasing this so close to Black Panther 2 and Strange World
Rather cannibalizing itself there
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Disney grew up so big they trip with their own feet.
Wake me up at your own risk.Wakanda Forver has already made the money it needed to make, and considering how little they've advertised it, I don't think the studio has much of an investment on Strange World (and I doubt it and Avatar have much demographic overlap to begin with).

I, uh... don’t exactly think Strange World is going to be any threat to Avatar. Its box office earnings were dreadful.
“Now! Let us engage in the art of deduction!”I meant more Disney's bizarre decision to place Strange World right in the middle of 2 tent-pole films.
They hung out that film to drown without a life jacket.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."I… genuinely don’t even know what Strange World and this thread right now is literally the first time I’ve ever heard of it
PSN ID: FateSeraph | Switch friendcode: SW-0145-8835-0610 Congratulations! She/TheyIt's the new Disney Animated Canon movie, a pulp sci-fi throwback.
And yeah, they have not done a good job advertising it.
Disney100 Marathon | DreamWorks MarathonFirst critical reactions are coming in and critics are overall very positive. Looks to be universal praise for the visuals, with some pointing out the long story/pacing as a flaw that may or may not be overcome by the amazing visuals.
Huh, what? It's already out? That was fast.
Optimism is a duty.Critics got early screenings; it doesn't come out until December 16 in many territories (or Dec 15 for early public screenings).
Notably, it seems like the story is an improvement over the first movie's. Not a huge accomplishment, I know, but still.
Jason has come back to kill for Mommy.Just pointing out, those aren't critical reactions, they're early screenings.
IE people who already are on good terms with the production company and shown the movie for the sake of building hype. To be honest, early reactions are only worth listening to if they're incredibly negative because they're inevitably people who are either already fans or have a vested interest in the movie doing well (e.g. WW 84's early screenings being comically positive because the audience included many DC stans).
Actual early critical reviews are just coming out now and do seem to be pretty positive, however.

The thing is, decent isn’t enough. This movie cost $2 billion to make, so it will NEED to make a ton of money.
