I've been using 40 and not 40d16... so I figured before it gets to my turn I should upgrade.

Something I noticed is dwarf manager v0.7 doesn't seem to work with it. What does everyone else use to manage their dwarfs in 40d16?

edit: Ah I found the answer to my question. I got Dwarf Therapist instead.

Well a graphics pack is nice, but when it comes to making sure your dorfs are being as smart as they can be, having a dorf management program helps.

I'm liking the one I'm using now as I can easily see what dorfs are unhappy and what ones are given strange labor assignments. Makes it also nice for recruiting for the guard.

Psyberian Husky, you're in for turn 6.

I'm too lazy to find a management program that works on Mac or Linux (I tend not to play DF on my Windows box). At least haphazardly toggling various hauling jobs gives me something to do during slow periods.

Well, my turn is just about done; got a month and a half left. Where should I send the save?

I forget, what happens when you run a river into a chasm? I probably won't have time now, but it might be a fun project for later.

  • It probably kills the frame rate, but even so, it's be kinda cool to have it behind floodgates, to at least have the option.

Report 2

From the Table of Rakust Stukozon, Mayor:

State of the Fortress, Year 203

  • Thirteen dwarfs, plenty of food and drink, and not much else. Mirrorpasses is sustainable but definitely lacking in industry.
    • I've put the ambitious moat project on hold, and used the miners to further expand our fortress.
      • First order of business was to cut the entrances to accept some doors.
      • I've also moved most of the garbage dumps outside. Äkil's flaming tits, does it ever smell.
    • We have a surprising about of cave spider silk, and I intend to put it to use.

Granite

14th Granite, 203

  • Elven Trade Caravan arrived, found we didn't have trade goods, and left. How embarrassing, getting shown up by those pointy eared-sapsuckers.

Slate

1st Slate, 203

  • By Äkil, are the seasons outside supposed to change this fast.

3rd Slate

  • Migrants! Twenty one of them, bringing our total population to thirty four.
  • Added an industrial and finished goods stockpile. Hope to expand and reorganize it later.

Felsite

  • I am announcing a Small Leap Forward; I intend to expand our textile and trade good production over the next month or two.

Hematite

  • Added a kennel to train our dogs, and began construction on a siege workshop for later.
  • Been very busy tallying up our stockpiles.

Malachite

  • With the need for space starting to slack off, I've partially resumed construction on the moat, as best as I can remember.
    • The moat project has exposed a surprising amount of minerals, mostly galena, but small amounts of hematite and tetrahedrite, trace amounts of aluminium, and in the river, copper.
      • Note to self, stick to the wine; That is a lot of lead along the riverbank.

Galena

22nd Galena

  • Good Äkil, is it ever bori...I require additional Rock!

Limestone

1st Limestone

  • Apparently, I briefly went insane, claimed a craftsdwarf's workshop, and built a crown.
  • Mayor Stukozon produces Dakälmunèst Erlinevost, “Skirtedgroves the High Sect”, an Andesite Crown! Estimated value of 4800.
    • This is a Andesite crown. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. This object menaces with spikes of Andesite. On the item is an image of circles in Andesite. On the item is an image of a Andesite crown in Andesite.
      • How the hell did I put a picture of the Dakälmunèst Erlinevost on Dakälmunèst Erlinevost?

13th Limestone

  • The caravan from the Mountainhome has arrived.
    • We've traded our stock of crafts for...mostly odds and ends; food, barrels, rope. Nothing vital, but nice to have.
      • The hamlet liason seemed to like our local cuisine.

Sandstone

  • Incursions by kobold thief and goblin snatcher; thief chased off, snatcher beaten to death. Recruit Anamnish wounded in arm.

23th Sandstone

  • Another seven migrants.
    • I have decide to form a militia to defend our fortress. Our first squad is the Armored Standards; for now, I've set up a temporary sparring site in a corner of the dining hall.
  • I have also begun plans for a bastion to the west of our fortress. Hopefully, it will be a good start on a proper gatehouse.

  • Another snatcher killed without incident. Shot twice by a hunter and then beaten to death.

Timber

  • The secrets of the Accounting Gods are mine! I am become a legendary accountant!

Moonstone

  • I have begun construction of a small dam in the river to aid excavation of the copper deposits. The engineers assure me a wall constructed of ice will be sound.

28th Moonstone

  • Damn, I must have gotten complacent; a snatcher has made off with the child Olon Vabokkul.

Opal

4th Opal

  • Cerol Komandomas (daughter) has been born to Kivish Nokgolalath (mother) and Amost Lularustuth (father).
    • Oddly enough, she's the younger sister of Olon Vabokkul. When I mentioned she would make a fine replacement, the mother wouldn't stop crying for some reason.

Obsidian

  • By Äkil, the riverbed is full of copper. The vein is absolutely enormous. I hope the dam holds long enough for us to reclaim all of it.
    • The moat site is approaching the site of the bottomless pits. There's some entertaining possibilities there.
  • I've carved out a barracks site near the main entrance, and connected it to the now enclosed western bailey, which I designated as the sparring area for our military.
    • With all the practic they're getting in, they're getting pretty respectable.

10th Obsidian, 203

  • Miner Tom Cogstukos was taken by a fey mood, and claims Mason's workshop, three andesite, and begins construction on...something.

14th Obsidian, 203

  • Tom Cogstukos creates Nekkuttomus, “Secretshove”, an Andesite Throne, valued at 4800.
    • This is a Andesite throne. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. It is encrusted with Andesite and encircled with bands of Andesite. This object menaces with spikes of Andesite.
      • It'd make a pretty great office throne, but I'll decide what to do with it later.

End of Year Report

  • Our textile industry is ready to take off, and in fact it may be advisable to construct another Clothier's Shop; we have a stockpile of 60 bolts of Cave Spider Silk Cloth and 259 Spindles of Cave Spider Silk Thread. I've been waiting on dye before I kick off our textile industry.
  • Wood is starting to become a problem. It's holding up our carpentry and our smithing industries.
  • Going to need more in the way of stockpiles, especially for food.
  • Stone is starting to get cleared out of the fortress by the masons and craftsdwarves.
  • Wood, seeds, flux, and fuel are on order.

I think I shall take a sabbatical, and concentrate on my art. The accounts are mostly balanced, and I feel the arts of Masonry and Engraving calling me.

The western bailey makes me think of Kung Fu; I think it's the snow covered smooth stone tiles making me think of the Shaolin monastery. Especially appropriate since we have a bunch of unarmed sparring going on.

That throne is mine, fools! Mine I say! My precious...

And by moving the refuse stockpile outside we're bound to have some moronic dwarves run out to place a dead mouse in it when we're under siege by god damn kobolds or goblins.

There is also magma in the mountain. Don't spend our wood on smithing.

The easiest way to answer what Dwarf Fortress is, is to type the words Dwarf Fortress as one word like this...

Dwarf Fortress

Notice that it is still two words and is now a link.

I really don't want to sound like a smart ass directing you that way, but really the description of Dwarf Fortress on TV Tropes does a far better job than I could ever do.

I must admit I'm looking forward to my turn. It seems so far away. It actually feels like it's two years away...

Always more room, e X. You have turn 7 now.

Airlocks have always been my strategy with refuse piles. Diagonal passages are more effective, I guess, but they've always seemed like cheating to me.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have some fresh alcohol biscuits waiting.

Well obviously, you heard somebody liked Dakälmunèst Erlinevost, so you put Dakälmunèst Erlinevost on Dakälmunèst Erlinevost so they can crown while they crown.

How — and when — do you tell a philosophy it's adopted? What do you do when it wants to meet its birth adherents?

From the logs of Comonad Fashèrith, Illuminatus

1st Granite, 204

  • With Stukozon out of the way for the moment, I can move into the open for a while. This bodes exceedingly well for the goals of Tosidlorbam.
  • My first act as acting commander is to commence construction of the Tower of Killing Everything. The outcropping of rock above and slightly west of the entrance seems an ideal base, as it provides a vantage point from which to rain bolts upon invaders near the main gateway. I plot out an access shaft, narrow for easy defense; order the engravers to smooth out the boulders above; and begin channeling out some space for the marksdwarves to fire.
  • We have insufficient bolts but many, many bones; I order that this be rectified.
  • Wood is definitely a problem; we have 9 logs and few trees to fell, and of course we'll need wood for bins, barrels, beds, and charcoal. We should request more wood from the next caravan to arrive.

10th Granite

  • I've begun construction of the tower walls, and I've taken up the crossbow in order to better use the tower. Ushat still works directly under me; Èzum will lead Cog in hammer training so we'll have some melee fighters left.

11th Granite

  • By Lun, the kitchens reek! Our outdoor refuse stockpile is too far away to store everything, it seems. I plot out one by the kitchens and butchers' shop, with an airlock.
  • Seriously, what is this?

12th Granite

  • An elven caravan arrives.

18th Granite

  • Some kobold thieves think they can make off with some of our goods.
  • There seem to be no bolts available yet, so I'm spending the time sparring with Cog. He has a spear, I have a melee crossbow. Hell yes.
  • The indoor refuse pile is full of rocks, but there's enough space to move the trash from the kitchen and tanner's, and the miasma there has cleared up.

21st Granite

  • Rockopolis briefly considers going to meet the elven caravan for trading, but then she gets hungry. I think it's a good thing they didn't bring a diplomat.

24th Granite

  • Rockopolis finishes her meal and makes it to the depot.
    • The elves have nothing but wood and cloth. We don't particularly need to import cloth, but the logs are helpful, at least.
    • Once she's finished trading, Rockopolis rushes off with a look of relief on her face and heads back to her wall-detailing.

8th Slate

  • The first floor of the Tower is complete! I've also charted out a path directly from the bailey for easy defense. Time to get started on the second floor. Rockopolis and her dwarves can help fortify the lower floor, but there's not much of a path from there anyway. Can't hurt, at least.

23rd Slate

  • We have too much food, and it's rotting before it can get stored. I dig out some extra food storage space in hopes that this will help.

24th Slate

  • Migrants arrive. We get a gem cutter, two carpenters, a pump operator, a clothier, two blacksmiths, a bowyer,

25th Slate

  • two peasants, two children, two puppies, a brewer, a thresher, a donkey foal, a hunter,

26th Slate

  • three more peasants, a woodcutter, another brewer, an engineer, another hunter, and another child.
  • With so many denizens of the fortress, the Sheriff founds the Fortress Guard. This is quite a feat, given that the Sheriff does not, at this point in time, exist. I see no reason to rectify this thus far.
