If you're playing Team Colonel the S code is OP. It's home to like four different Program Advances.

Er, not what I said.

Either way, I know the S code is abundant, but they're level 1. Level 2 and 3 chips have different codes.

R and G codes are more hilariously OP, R codes have all the Sword/Blade combos and even the Bomb comboes, while G is home to Gater or Gatemagic, which is forever the ultimate Navi PA.

Gater is Battle Network 2 exclusive though.

And now I've completed 11.

I swear this game made me stress-age a year or two. I'll agree with the sentiment I've seen in this thread that the levels are long with sparse checkpoints, and that made me much more nervous because I really did not want to have to go through the tricky sections any more than I needed to. Any stage with an Advancing Wall of Doom (Torchman and the second Gear Fortress level) I struggled to get through and it took me a while to realize just how cheap Energy Tanks were and stock up on them at all times. Acidman's stage was a nail-biter with all its stage hazards and I had to rely on that part that protects you from spikes to get past that final gauntlet. Bounceman's stage was by far my least favorite. For a level based on a funhouse that was way too finicky to be any fun whatsoever. Fuseman and Tundraman had the easiest stages for me since I was able to complete them each in one go.

Most importantly 11 provided a blueprint for how Megaman platformers should be handled going forward. While of course they're not the same as good sprite and pixel art, you can tell that the modelers and designers put a lot of care and detail into their work. The art direction embodied the sort of cartooniness that I most associate with Capcom and I'm sad that they don't make these kinds of games much anymore. I think 11 did a great job of balancing the NES qualities that people like about the Classic series while making it accessible and giving it a modern-looking coat of paint. Oh yeah, and I sensibly-chuckled at Wily wanting to create heroic robots in the past; though given Capcom's usual quality of writing that could be them just failing upward.

So that's the Classic series down (minus Megaman & Bass, which I wish had been included on the Legacy Collections since the only way to play it legitimately that I know of is to track down the hard-as-balls GBA port). I'm going to take a little break before diving in to the X series. I'm looking forward to that!

Bass is honestly not worth playing. It's easily the worst Classic game with tanky enemies, wonky i-frames, and design that either punishes you with levels, or makes you fight bosses with effectively doubled the shots needed. Pick your poison.

If you do want to be a masochist and play it don't bother playing as Mega Man, the levels seem to have been designed with Bass' double jump and dash in mind so playing as the blue guy is torturous.

I've beaten the game with both. It's a great Classic title, to me.

I mean, playing as Bass just leaves me thinking "why am I not playing Zero 3 and 4." Those games even have double jump.

Honestly now that we have... means to play the SFC version, you should play that instead of the GBA version.

Eh. Classic, X and Zero all feel like different distinct game-types to me. I dont go to Classic if I have an itch for anything else.

I bought a used MM&B game and the previous player had Bass at the endgame with every weapon unlocked, while the Mega Man file had 519 screws and nothing else.

The Protomen enhanced my life.

MM&B I found fun enough and I played the gBA version(which TBH has the better version of groundman and burnman's themes). I agree Bass makes the game better because Megs oftentimes feels like he barely makes jumps, but this was the first MM 7/8 styled classic game I played so perhaps I just wasn't use to the stifness of it.

I still like MM&B over most of the pre 7 classic games.

MM&B is the only classic title not including non platformer spinoffs and the GB games that I would consider bad. Mainly due to the godawful level design.

why is the level design bad?

Enemy placement is incredibly cheap. Ive gotten surprised killed because an enemy showed up that I no way of reacting to and knowing was there. Sometimes there put in places where their attacks are undodgeable. Off the top of my head the bouncing ball guys in Burner Man's stage.

Some gimmicks are not really well explained and felt kind of random They really felt like they were for Bass instead of Mega Man. Keep in mind the scrunched screen did that help either, but from what I've seen from that SNES version (I've only played GBA) a lot of what I didn'tlike is still there. And there's everything else.

Yeah, everything has way too much health, the enemy placement is cheap, the levels aren't all that well designed thematically, the game has aspects for both Mega and Bass, but punishes you for picking either. It's like instead of trying to make alternate levels to fit them ala Sonic 3 or Freedom Planet, they had them go through the same levels without accounting for the differences in play mechanics.

And easily some of the worst bosses this side of Classic.

It's not irredeemable, graphically it's hella impressive getting the Mega Man 8 sprites into the SNES engine of 7, there's some standout tracks, the attempt to add a bit more story is nice, and the bios on all the classic robots are cool.

But if I were personally asked if the game's worth it, I'd absolutely say no.

The robot masters were fine but the king's level bosses were BS yeah lol.

RNB had some infuriating level design elements, but the weakpoint weapons were utterly devastating when used properly (King was smart and reinforced the Robot Masters against the basic buster). Cold Pillars dump Burner in his own spiked pits for hilariously large damage, Pirate Man's bubble attack is defused by dumping hot fuel swirls on him (flamethrower doesn't work underwater), Astro Man still dies to Magic Card (It isn't paralysing him with his paranoia by locking onto him with the Homing Sniper but eh), Tengu is weak to drills (Maybe because they're more impressive than his mosquito's probe nose), Ground Man hates the Pirate Mines, Magic Man is torn to shreds by the Tengu Blade, and the only really asshole robot master is Dynamo Man.

I still hate that Mega Man and Bass has no e-tanks, like sure i could beat 1 and 8 without them but holy shit, the Fortress levels need as E-tank or 2.

You guys ever think Zero gets nightmares of murdering Ciel and the rest of the resistance? That's sort of why i think he's hesitant to ever confess his feelings towards her.

[up] I'd imagine in 1 he doesn't really have any nightmares because he's mostly amnesiac, but after, yeah...

That's also why i think he took a year away from the Resistance, aside from keeping Neo Arcadia focused on him while the rest could find a new hideout, he still remembers he has murderous programming and doesn't want to come back unless he's absolutely sure he won't turn berserk on them.
