He use to take private detective gigs usually of the occult flavor 'Think Call of Cthulu types'

Basically Dante's a Private Detective/ Bodyguard/ One man PMC

Yeah. If he really needs to be low key he says he takes "Odd jobs" which is correct but very much undersells how odd they are.

I mean He could do more... legit PMC stuff but he tends to keep his interests in occult cult stuff or well outright Demon hunting

'Basically if something strikes him as having a clear demon connection'

Frankly I think he wastes most of his time trying to catch Sasquatch

The problem with him is that he apparently is shit at networking. He'd be shit out of luck if he didn't have Morrison scrounging up the occasional job.

Doesn't matter how skilled you are if you can't be professional.

Dante is professional in the sense that he gets paid for his work.

There's more to it than that. Dante seems to really lack a lot of business and financial management sense. He doesn't seem to be good at advertising his services and seems to be entirely reliant on one guy for getting job offers.

Honestly, I'm surprised he knew how to apply for a lease and set up an office for himself.

And as for the "getting paid" thing...how many times in the games did we actually see Dante get money for what he was doing?

One. I didn't see him getting paid for being Lured into a Trap in the first game. And while he was ostensibly hired in DMC 2, we again never saw any money. DMC 3 saw him lose his new shop before it even officially opened for business and settling a personal pissing contest with his brother. DMC 4 was about him getting back stolen property and meeting the nephew he never knew existed.

DMC 5 is the only game where we actually see Dante get some money.

Heck, Harry Dresden is better when it comes to earning money, and he struggles to make payments on his beat-up VW Beetle.

[up][up][up]In the now non-canon prequel novel, Dante as "Tony Redgrave" did seem prepared to take up a job as a more conventional mercenary or bounty hunter. Vergil put the kibosh on that.

I think he did get some payment in the epilogue to 4...and it was appropriately a thin stack of money rolled up and tied and rubber banded together. The bills were probably only 20's at most.

I had a thought about V's appearance. I can accept that he either found or stole his clothes (although that doesn't explain the jewelry; why he bothered at all, or why he clearly took the time to get jewelry that matches the aesthetic of his outfit), and I know his hair is actually white, and only seems black because Nightmare lives in it when he's not active. But I've been wondering about his eye color. Why green? Were they afraid if they gave him the blue eyes he should theoretically have the players would figure out what his deal was too early? Did whoever was in charge of his character model just think he looked best with green eyes? Something else? After a picture I happened to see yesterday, I'm leaning toward 'something else'. You remember those pictures they released that were very close shots of certain characters faces? I happened to see one of Trish. Trish was made to look exactly like Dante and Vergil's mother Eva, right? Well, Trish has green eyes. Which means Eva had green eyes. If V is 'human Vergil', his eye color makes perfect sense: as a human, Vergil has his mother's eyes. Which I find a little heartbreaking, considering what Vergil's spent most of his life believing about his mother.

Tellingly Nero is doing really fine with his chain of the franchise so clearly he knows something that Dante doesn't about demon-hunting.

It seems like Nero might also be running side businesses alongside Kyrie and Nico. Nero's probably also a local hometown hero after the events of DMC 4.

Like I said, networking is key.

The issue seems to be that Dante has something of a Crippling Overspecialization. He's really good at killing demons and showing off, but not much else. His social skills are pretty much non-existent due to his own suppressed self-loathing. Nero had a lot of angst growing up too due to being mocked as a (supposed) Son of a Whore by the other kids and having to hide his Devil Bringer, but it seems like being raised alongside Kyrie and Credo helped stabilize him.

Dante's the better demon slayer, but Nero's better at functioning in human society.

Dante is apparently very generous with helping out those plauged by demons and works for very little pay while he is also allegedly terrible with money and relies on Lady for financial support.

I wouldn't be surprised if Dante did a lot of demon slaying pro bono or for a pittance. It's Personal when it comes to demons.

Dante could make more money as a more conventional mercenary, but it seems like what he went through in the (non-canon?) prequel novel soured him on that. Losing another family was just too much for him.

Its implied that if Dante WANTED to be Rich

He could be Rich, I mean just waltz up to one of those shady Government Paranormal agency with a stack of slain demons

you know with out citing the obvious answer of just take normal bounty hunting jobs of High profile Criminals Boom take out like the FBI top most wanted 'which usually have significant bounties tied to their capture or termination'

Dante is a extremely resilient hunter

Dante chooses his lifestyle

There's wanting to be rich and being so bad with money that he regularly can't make payments on basic utilities.

The issue is that Dante has chosen this career path because It's Personal. He's bad at making money as a demon slayer because it's not really about money for him. Even in DMC 5 when he actually gets a wad of cash, it's clear that his real motivation is because the demon he's fighting is Vergil.

Dante doesn't take care of himself because of his self loathing issues.

It's a pretty realistic take on his neurosis.

At least it sounded deep to me, it's really not how I expected him to sound.

Beryl, a demon hunter who appeared in the DMC 2 prequel novel. And that's a rifle based on anti-tank rifle. She was a precursor to Lady.

And yes Patty's the blonde one with the snake bracelet.

Well Trish looks positively satanic in this fan art, doesn't she?
