I'd prefer focusing on individuals and organisations outside of the Sparda family who are tasked with fighting demons.

...So, is devil May Cry 2 really as shoddy as the grapevine says?

Yes.

It had interesting ideas the following games capitalized on, but it's an average at best product due to its messy development.

Infamously broken gun spam aside, the AI is really bad.

It's not even the fun or interesting kind of bad, it's just really boring.

Nero doesn't know that so it'd be amusing if he went on a quest to do that and he finds out they could leave whenever they want.

The problem with that is that the series is entirely based around the Sparda bloodline. Like, 6 would have to introduce a whole new faction and do a ton of worldbuilding of supporting characters that would fit in that category before they could take the limelight, unless you just want to go straight into a spinoff. Like the Ladies' Night DLC

Also, the game has now sold 2 million copies in 2 weeks, making it the fastest selling game in the franchise.

I don't think it's impossible. The Castlevania and Resident Evil games have had popular entries that didn't star the Belmonts and the Chris/Jill/Leon trio. It wouldn't be too difficult to introduce other devil hunters in this franchise. It's literally a business as established since the first game.

Edit: Perhaps focus isn't the right word but I would like if the franchise isn't just the Sparda family.

CV and RE have always had rotating protagonists, so that's not really a good comparison, and even then they had elements that still connected them to previous games like Claire being Chris' sister, the Morris' being friends with the Belmonts, Soma being Dracula and a Belmont being a costar, etc.

Well for new games you could have Trish and Lady who are friends with Dante and/or Lucia whose clan once worked with Sparda.

Also the recent RE game had a protagonist completely unconnected to the previous heroes. It still worked out.

I'm pretty sure the next main entry is them finally caving and doing the Sparda Prequel(s) people have been asking since 3

We would be able to finally see how Sparda woke up to justice!

@windoeopard I don't see why they would ditch Nero after they've spent so long trying to prop him as the protagonist and Dante's successor.

I think Nero needs a solo game where he's not in Dante's shadow anymore or a game where there's a deuteragonist or two that's not Dante but with Nero leading it.

Would be a shame to get rid of Dante's gameplay though.

I wonder, if in Bayonetta 3, Bayonetta goes to inferno again and Runs into Dante and Vergil as they appear in 5 as a small cameo. It could even be an optional area.

Hideki Kamiya still loves his old home, and wants to work with them again. Having Dante and Vergil Cameo in Bayo 3 would be a nice hint of that eventual idea.

If Dante manage to have a child prior to him going down to hell at the end of 5, I could see said child inherenting Dante's play style.

Nero's kid could inherent Vergils style. Hell, considering how Nero's true Devil Trigger looks suspiciously like an Onimusha, have some Canon Welding happen where either the prostitute that appeared in DMC 4SE that looks longingly at Vergil or Kyrie herself have a secret blood tie to the Onimusha clan somehow, and add in some Onimusha tech to Nero's child.

They would obviously do something to ensure you can play someone like Dante, even if it's not actually Dante anymore. To tons of people it's "Dante May Cry". I'm pretty sure after DMC4 came out, the most common complaint after the backtracking was "Needs MOAR Dante". Totally gutting how Dante fits in numerous movelists into one character would not doubt greatly disappoint the most hardcore of the game's playerbase.

Ha. Beat the game. But now if I want to bring up a topic about it I got twenty pages to go through to see if that topic has been covered or not. Bah.

On the topic of playable characters and successors, I'm still not sold on Nero being the new headliner. And I like Nero. I just ultimately can't stop seeing him as Dante lite. Besides, I actually really like his chemistry with Dante too so if Nero's around I kinda want Dante to be too, both because Dante is awesome and because Nero is better when Dante is there.

Maybe the next game will revolve around that — Nero shedding the notion that he's a poor man's Dante.

Personally I don't get why anyone would even shop around the idea of replacing Dante in the first place. He's one of the most entertaining and iconic characters in all of video games, and there hasn't been nearly enough games in the franchise for him to start wearing thin.

But between Nero and the reboot, there have actually been multiple attempts now. And it sure ain't sticking.
